The Governess Affair (The Brothers Sinister Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 5,067 ratings

The start of a critically acclaimed historical romance series by New York Times bestselling author Courtney Milan...

Hugo Marshall earned the nickname "the Wolf of Clermont" for his ruthless ambition--a characteristic that has served him well, elevating the coal miner's son to the right hand man of a duke. When he's ordered to get rid of a pestering governess by fair means or foul, it's just another day at work.

But after everything Miss Serena Barton has been through at the hands of his employer, she is determined to make him pay. She won't let anyone stop her--not even the man that all of London fears. They might call Hugo Marshall the Wolf of Clermont, but even wolves can be brought to heel...

THE GOVERNESS AFFAIR by Courtney Milan (A Brothers Sinister Prequel Novella)

THE GOVERNESS AFFAIR by Courtney Milan (A Brothers Sinister Prequel Novella)
Setting: London, October 1835THE GOVERNESS AFFAIR: Miss Serena Barton intends to hold the petty, selfish duke who had her sacked responsible for his crimes. But the man who handles all the duke's dirty business, Hugo Marshall aka the Wolf of Clermont, has been ordered to get rid of her by fair means or foul. To bring this wolf to heel she'll have to prove more than his match...Oh my goodness, I completely adored this short but absolutely beautiful love story. The characters, the content, and pretty much everything about it called to me on all levels. Serena and Hugo were both so strong and brave, but also a little bit broken. Their guilt, regret, and shame just about tore my heart in two and at one point even made me cry. The dialogue was smart and snappy, and their connection and desire for one another was undeniable. Honestly, just watching these two fall in love was an utter joy to behold. Please note however that this is not always an easy read and does contain some heavy subject matter. POSSIBLE SPOILER: There are underlying themes of child abuse and rape, both of which set up the plot and motivations for our hero and heroine. In the end though not only were Serena and Hugo well fleshed (especially for being a novella) but their romance was emotionally engaging and utterly lovely too. Overall I'm so pleased I decided to read this story, highly recommend it, and just hope you love it as much as I did =)Pages & Kindle Locations: The story itself contained 134 pages and ended at 88% and location 1489 on my kindle device.

Miss Serena Barton wanted nothing more than a small farm where she could grow lavender. She had toiled for years to achieve this dream when one day everything changed. Her exploitation at the hands of a duke left her without a job and a marred reputation. Determined to get justice and make the duke pay, Serena will not stop even if she has to bring to heel the "Wolf of Clermont" who is also the most feared man in London!
Hugo has earned the nickname of the "Wolf of Clermont" because of his ruthless ways of getting rid of all problems for the Duke of Clermont. Determined to achieve his dream which is the main reason why he works for the Duke, he will not stop even if the problem this time is the very alluring Miss Serena Barton!

Courtney Milan has made it to my list of favorite authors with her book, The Governess Affair. Beautifully pictured on the cover with a very intriguing blurb, I just loved her book. :)

A prequel to her The Brothers Sinister Series, I loved just about everything in the book. The plot is well conceived and admirably executed with no loopholes. The story is well paced and it manages to keep the reader glued to the book until the very end. I just had to finish this book in one sitting, so engrossed was I in the story!

The writing style is simple, elegant and the sentences well phrased to suit the era of the story. The settings are believable and I was able to picture every scene and event in the book like it was happening right in front of my own eyes. Courtney takes the readers on a ride to the Regency era England with wealthy and pompous Dukes, Marriages based on the dowry brought by the brides and a stringent social structure with no regard to the feelings and self esteem of the lower social strata people.

I admired and respected Serena for her perseverance and strength of endurance to all the difficulties she faced on the path to justice. In a time when women were considered fit just for dressing and looking beautiful, Serena is independent, opinionated and strong.

“I will not be browbeaten, however nicely you do it. I am done with things happening to me. From here on out, I am going to happen to things.”

Hugo is an enigma and a man damaged by his unhappy childhood. He is sometimes kind, considerate and seemingly "safe" while the next moment he is the "Wolf of Clermont", ruthless and with no conscience. The romance between Serena and Hugo is both touching as well as sensuous. It is a romance that leaves you with a ear-to-ear smile on your face and a soaring heart. The character contrast between Serena and her sister is also very expertly portrayed and a message sent to the readers. Same is the case with Hugo's traumatic past. A strong message is sent across by the author at the end which made this book more than just a good story. It came into the category of books that entertain as well as enlighten the reader.

Thoroughly enjoyable and a great start to a critically acclaimed series, I just cant wait to get my hands on the next books in the series. A full 5 on 5 to The Governess Affair and a strong recommendation that you go read this book.

This is a great set-up for Milan's next series, The Brothers Sinister, which will begin with THE DUCHESS WAR in the summer of this year, about Robert Blaisdell, the Duke of Clermont. Book 2 (THE HEIRESS EFFECT) will be about Robert's half brother Oliver, and Book 3 (THE COUNTESS CONSPIRACY) about cousin Sebastian Malheur, the Earl of Raine. Basing my opinion on this little novella, I think this series is going to be another winner for Milan.

This novella features Hugo Marshall as its hero. Marshall is an interesting, almost enigmatic at first, lower-class man working to make the Duke of Clermont solvent after all the duke's financial missteps. Marshall's ruthlessness has him being dubbed the Wolf of Clermont. If Marshall succeeds in making the duke a rich man again, his reward will be enough money to set himself up independently.

This duke is a bad dude, no morals, humanity or conscience. He married into money to help in his search for solvency but his tom-cat ways have already alienated his duchess and her funds. Just when the duke is attempting to win his duchess back to his side, Serena Barton, ex-governess, enters the picture. She wants something from the duke and he's not responding well so she's having a sit-in at the park across from his mansion. Marshall is sent to clean up this little annoyance so that they can get back to the important matter of making money.

This story is tightly and well set up. The characters are very well-drawn, 3-dimensional people and that's not so easy to achieve with the short format. We see what the H and h are like and even learn about their pasts and motivations behind their actions. In addition, we have the added interest of the interaction of Serena with her agoraphobic sister Frederica. Amazing that so much was covered by Milan.

It's darned good. I did not award it 5 stars because the middle section wasn't as tight, IMO, as the beginning and the end and, in addition, call me an old fuddy duddy but I felt the love scene went over-long and took pages away from the lead up to it. I did see the need for the love scene itself because it was very important for Serena's emotional health. But still, it could have been a bit shorter.

The epilogue is great and is an excellent set-up for the first book in Milan's new series.

His role was to protect the duke at all costs and as efficiently as possible. A threat here, a deal there all helping him towards his own personal financial gain. Nothing would be allowed to get in his way. Tidying those loose annoying strands away neatly for the duke, until he permitted one of those strands to wrap around his soul.

5.0 out of 5 stars Toll!! und mal anders aber humorig erzählt.
Reviewed in Germany on April 3, 2013

5.0 out of 5 stars A smart, quirky story with interesting characters
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 25, 2012
The Governess Affair is a bit like a slice of chocolate cake - the temptation is to consume it all in one go, and you might regret that you didn't savour it a little more when it's finished. Thankfully, that's where the simile ends, as this novella easily justifies re-reading and is guaranteed to have no calories.

I was a bit put off by the title - it looked like one of those Governess/Duke romances, which I'm never very keen on. This isn't at like that: the hero is a plain Mr Marshall, Serena is just a lady (not a Lady) who has fallen on hard times, no children feature as plot muppets to show how nice Serena is, neither the hero or heroine are devastatingly beautiful etc. etc. Suffice to say, this is original and all the more enjoyable for that.

I'm not going to give away the plot, because as it's shortish (~1500 kindle locations, or 30k words) that would be mean of me. The unfolding of the plot and guessing why Serena has come into conflict with Hugo is part of the fun of this story. The plot moves at a good pace. Although inevitably the h/h fall in love quickly, it doesn't feel rushed. Serena is a sympathetic character - she's been wronged and is determined that she won't been wronged again. Hugo is one of Milan's wonderfully restrained heros - he holds himself tightly together and when his emotion spills over it just melts your heart. There are really only two side characters - the Duke of Clermont and Serena's sister. This works well, as both are fully fleshed out characters who play important roles but also have their own lives, which is a nice change from 'wallpaper' characters that you so often get in romances.

I'm struggling to really explain why I like this so much without putting in spoilers. The twig, the notes, the letters, the pins - all these awesome bits of the book would be spoiled if I told you about them. So I'm just going to say that I like this novella because it is very much in the quick witted, smart and quirky style of Milan's other works. If you liked Unlocked or any of her other books, then give The Governess Affair a go, as I think Milan's books are getting better and better.
