Unfortunately Yours: A Novel (Vine Mess Book 2) Kindle Edition
#1 New York Times bestselling author Tessa Bailey is back in Napa Valley with this hilarious rom-com about a down-on-her-luck heiress who suggests a mutually beneficial marriage of convenience to a man she can’t stand... only to discover there’s a fine line between love and hate.
After losing her job and her fiancé in one fell swoop, Natalie Vos returned home to lick her wounds. A few months later, she’s sufficiently drowned her sorrows in cabernet and she’s ready to get back on her feet. She just needs her trust fund to finance her new business venture. Unfortunately, the terms require she marry before she can have the money. And well, dumped, remember?
But Natalie is desperate enough to propose to a man who makes her want to kill him—and kiss him, in equal measure.
August Cates may own a vineyard, but he doesn’t know jack about making wine. He’s determined to do his late best friend proud, no matter what it takes. Except his tasting room is empty, his wine is disgusting (seriously, he once saw someone gag), and his buddy’s legacy is circling the drain. No bank will give him the loan he needs to turn the business around... and then the gorgeous, feisty heiress knocks on his door.
Natalie has haunted August's dreams since the moment they met, but their sizzling chemistry immediately morphed into simmering insults. Now, a quickie marriage could help them both. A sham wedding, a few weeks living under the same roof, and then they can go their separate ways—assuming they make it out alive. How hard could it be?
There’s just one thing they didn’t account for: their unfortunate, unbearable, undeniable attraction.

“Bailey writes banter and rom-com scenarios with aplomb, but for those who like their romance on the spicier side, she’s also the Michelangelo of dirty talk. She wields filth like Da Vinci does a paintbrush, and there’s a lot to be said for an author who can fill such exchanges with all the requisite heat, enthusiastic consent, and yes, even humor, of such a scenario without veering into corny territory.” — Entertainment Weekly

When I buddy read Secretly Yours, I was instantly attracted to Natalie and her dry sense of humor. Seeing her and August interact in the first book was hilarious and once I knew she had her own book coming I was practically salivating waiting for it!
Cut to my new favorite book by Tessa Bailey! This is a masterpiece. Like, no joke. I was reading it in the airport and could not stop myself from laughing out loud like a hyena and people thought I was deranged.
After Secretly Yours, Natalie and August are “enemies” in that they can’t stop from throwing insults and jabs at one another every time they see each other. Underneath this facade, they’re both so attracted to one another and get off on getting the other riled up. When Natalie learns she can’t access her trust fund she needs to start her own finance startup unless she is married, insert ex-Navy Seal, August Cates. August can’t get a bank loan to save his friends winery dream, but with Natalie, a winery heiress, as his wife and partner, he just might be able to try to salvage his god-awful winery.
The banter, the humor, the jokes! It was perfection! The absolutely hilarious one liners got me every time. Underneath all the humor though, August and Natalie are two people hardened by life on the outside but marshmallows on the inside. Their relationship works so well partly because they both can be brutally honest with each other and that they have an extreme sense of loyalty. It also helps that August is a literal Sex God 🤷🏼♀️ It was so beautiful to watch them drop their guards and fully dive into their “sham marriage”.

This might be my new favorite book by Tessa! I fell in love with Natalie in Secretly Yours and was so excited that she would have her own book! I also love that I had read the first book which gave me the background information that sets this book up to be so perfect.
The banter, the humor, the jokes! I was constantly laughing at this book! Like out loud. In public. It was perfection! The absolutely hilarious one liners got me every time. August and Natalie are just two hilariously snarky people and it made reading so much fun.
I love that this is an enemies to lovers story with a marriage of convenience aspect. Just like Tessa said in her readers note, it only works if he’s been obsessed with her from the start. And my god, August LOVED Natalie from the very beginning. I love the constant correction these two went through in order to stop using jabs as a defense mechanism in order to let the other person in. It was so real and just showed how these two had such great chemistry and their willingness to be what the other needed.
I could go on and on, and I just might another time. But this was perfect. No notes. Just buy it!

This book was SO much better than the first in the series. If you weren't a fan don't let that stop you from enjoying this one.
Natalie Vos is back in her hometown after losing her corporate job in NYC. She comes from prime Winery royalty, and immediately looks down her nose at our very sexy, very bad wine maker, August Cates.
This is an enemies to lovers, he fall first, he falls HARD, marriage of convenience when these two crash into each other.
Natalie needs money from her trust fund to get her life moving in the right direction again.
August needs money so he doesn't lose his winery that he's created in memory of his best friend that died while they were Seals together.
Natalie can't get her trust fund without marrying.... and August doesn't ask questions when she asks him to be her husband.
I found August so endearing. He's got a great sense of honor and duty, obviously, but he's SO into Natalie off the bat even though they bicker like they hate each other. He's charming and funny and that DIRTY mouth. I just love him. I love how he holds Natalie up, and supports her no matter what. He also tries really hard to be a good communicator while wrestling with telling her everything all at once.
Natalie was easy to relate to. Her family and colleagues always underestimating her, and her intelligence, and her ability to be an asset. So of course she's suspicious of August when he keeps certain parts of himself from her.
These two do marriage of convenience RIGHT, and the chemistry between them is SO hot.
"So technically, we didn't have to get married. We just... wanted to?"
"Incorrect, I had to marry you."
"I know that no matter how it happened, it was right. I can't breathe for loving you and loving you is the only way I can breathe."
- Reviewed in the United States on September 27, 2023Listen. Let me begin by saying that the rating system we use is overly flawed. A 5-star book should be OUTSTANDING to you. A 4-star book should be SO GOOD to you. But then here is where we go awry... a 3-star book should simply be an averagely good book... but most people shun 3-stars like the plague... well, I believe that a 3-star book is a solidly enjoyable read, but not one that I would ever reread and one that wouldn't be at the forefront of my brain to recommend to others. Now that we've cleared that up, let's begin.
This book had such a fun premise. I actually loved how the marriage of convenience played into the plot. That isn't an easy trope to write in a believable way, and the plot frustration in the opening of the book played perfectly into the buildup.
So, Ciara, why the dock of stars? Well... I absolutely LOATHE 3rd act breakup/miscommunication that is completely unnecessary and unavoidable. And this book has that. These are grown adults (albeit adults with some baggage) and you're telling me that they cannot express their feelings? Uh uh. No ma'am. No sir. No way. It frustrates me to no end. Some communication is completely expected in human relationships, sure, but what goes down between Natalie and August is unbelievably infuriating.
Other than that, I truly enjoyed this book. I would recommend it if you typically enjoy Tessa Bailey and your run-of-the-mill Hallmark meets Romance Novels meets Sugar and Spice. It's a clever plot, solid characters, just some frustrating miscommunication that will make you want to chuck your book across the room (RIP my paperback copy).
This book has, I would say, 3.5/5 Spice and Vulgarity.

5.0 out of 5 stars Laugh out loud and superior witty banter- blush-worthy!
This was the most fun book I have read in awhile.
I love vulnerability in my main characters and while August was a rough around the edges and tough ex-Navy SEAL, and Natalie clearly projected sharp edges and no nonsense, they both had such deep emotions and hopes and sadness they were carrying with them. Once they allowed themselves to show that to each other it was beautiful. Particularly August just seemed to KNOW what Natalie needed out of him as a partner. It was so sweet.
If you have never read a Tessa Bailey book before just know that her steamy scenes and dirty talk should be the industry standard. Wow. These two characters nearly set my book on fire.
I just felt like this was the first book in awhile where everything clicked for me. The character development, the dialogue, setting, plot…it was all just wonderful. It’s hard to believe that I really did NOT like the first book in this series (you can totally read this one as a standalone).

Review;
I absolutely loved August and Natalie's story! I read it in a day, as it was so hard to put down. These two characters start off attracted to each other, then loathing each other, before they both need to get married to solve seperate problems in their careers and lives. August clearly loves Natalie since the very beginning, but cannot get it right with her. He can't help but bicker and argue with her, and he knows exactly how to push her buttons. Natalie needs to get back to New York and revive her career in finance. She feels alienated by her family and feels such loneliness, it hurts to read.
Their marriage of convenience soon turns into something really lovely and sweet and spicy. I loved how August just said what he meant - there was no miscommunication. He told Natalie how he felt about her and asked her directly how she felt about him. His lack of filter was hilarious and his honesty was so refreshing. It was hard to read about his past as a Navy SEAL and losing his best friend in the midst of it. Natalie was a cautious character and really struggled to let her walls down. I loved that she found it so easy to confide in August and that he was such a strength for her.
I also appreciated that there was no third act breakup, there was just time for these characters to sort their shit out in time for a beautiful ending and an even more glorious epilogue that had me all emotional.
Listen, I could go on about this book forever. The writing is wonderful, the characters were fleshed out and delightful. Their relationship, with the banter and the bickering, and the caretaking, and the SPICE (phew! Tessa Bailey and her dirty talk!) - I loved them and this book. I would definitely recommend this and reread it!
