Mad, Bad, and Dangerous To Know: A Western Christmas Novella Kindle Edition
English-born Andrew Kane had enjoyed the adventurous life of a gambler in the Wild West, but after winning a ranch in Colorado, he was ready to settle down. Then his attempt to protect a young tavern girl led to a shoot out and a wrongful conviction for murder.
On his journey to the gallows, he meets despairing young widow Eliza Holden who intervenes when he's being beaten by his guards. Together, they find comfort and a stunning sense of connection. Can Eliza create a Christmas miracle for them both?
Praise from readers:
"Mary Jo Putney always delivers wonderful stories that hold my interest and leave me feeling wonderful!"
"I am a fan of all of Mary Jo's books. She creates very likeable characters. I have read all of her books."
"The main characters have personal struggles which they approach with grit and honor. Of course the love and peace of the Christmas season helps them resolve and love. I really liked the story set in the West especially because there are so few good stories set there."
"This was a really unique and memorable romance and much different than anything I've read from MJP before. It contains some serious subject matter...just be aware that it's not a light and easy read."

About the author

A New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and USAToday bestselling author, Mary Jo Putney was born in Upstate New York with a reading addiction, a condition for which there is no known cure. Her entire romance writing career is an accidental byproduct of buying a computer for other purposes.
Her novels are known for psychological depth and intensity and include historical and contemporary romance, fantasy, and young adult fantasy. Winner of numerous writing awards, including two RITAs and two Romantic Times Career Achievement awards, she has five times had books listed among the Library Journal's top five romances of the year, and three times had books among the top ten romances of Booklist, the magazine of the American Library Association.
Her favorite reading is great stories, but in a pinch she'll settle for the backs of cereal boxes. She's delighted that e-publishing can now make available books that have been out of print.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 22, 2024This was a great story. I love how the characters meet and a bond is formed. I couldn't put the book down. This is a must read of Mary Jo Putney's books. I love a novella and how easy it is to read quickly.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 17, 2024Mary Jo Putney writes wonderful characters, but this novella is exceptional. I was looking for it to read again when it came out as a standalone. I love how it left me feeling heart-whole and hopeful. Read it if you have the chance.
PS. I rarely review books. I’m too hypercritical. This is the exception. Not one thing I would change. Enjoy!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 9, 2024An American Western Romance Novella
Note: This story first appeared in a 1993 anthology called RAKES AND ROGUES. It can also still be found in a collection by Putney called CHRISTMAS CANDLES... which is where I read it.
MAD, BAD, AND DANGEROUS TO KNOW was a really unique and memorable romance that felt much different than anything I've read by MJP before. It contains some serious subject matter which I don't want to mention and spoil for anyone, but just be aware that it's not a light and easy read. There's also some derogatory terms used which I was a little shocked to see. This happed twice, once each to a couple of different races. There is also a sex scene very early on which I just wasn't feeling since these two were virtual strangers. Regardless of its many faults though I adored Liza and Drew and their turbulent but amazing love story. I was captivated by the characters, the setting, and the events as they unfolded before my eyes. It was a bit outdated to be sure but overall I still liked and enjoyed it... 😊

- Reviewed in the United States on November 19, 2024I occasionally stray from the Regency Era but I was glad I did when purchasing this book. I have read all of Mary Jo Putney's historical books. This book was a great read. Briefly, the plot revolves around a condemned man and the widow of the man he killed, in true Mary Jo Putney style, she weaves a believable story around grounded characters. I am glad I read this "out of my lane" book, it will be relegated to reread books each Christmas. It makes a great present for yourself.

I've read lots of novels by her, but I loved this Western/romance/Christmas story just on December 24th, 2024.
A very happy Christmas for me, and obviously for Mary Jo Putney.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 3, 2024I have been reading this author's novels since the mid 80s and have never ever been anything but enthralled! This novelette is no exception!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 11, 2024Loved this book so much! Mary Jo is always a brilliant writer. Read it in one sitting, it was so good! Got me right out of a reading slump I was in.
