Shawna Coronado, author of 101 Organic Garden Hacks: Eco-Friendly Solutions to Improve Any Garden

"As a Pacific Northwest gardener, I am familiar with Noelle’s work in the temperate areas of Arizona, so I was curious about what she can offer a PNW gardener. This book is a great resource for understanding the culture of drought, conservation, capture, and water use in the garden. It is timely and essential to look at all options for your garden. Noelle touches on all methods of efficiently getting water to the garden with easy-to-understand drawings, photos and explanations to help you choose and create a beautiful water-wise garden."

Sue Goetz, Designer, Horticulturist, Author and Speaker

We all want the peaceful beauty of flowers and foliage plants; respite from summer’s heat under the canopy of mature shade trees; the joy of growing fresh vegetables, herbs, and fruits in our food gardens; and even the tickle of turf grass on our bare feet. At the same time, for the sake of future generations, we must be cognizant of the amount of water we’re using. The Water Smart Garden is a book you will refer to again and again to balance what you want out of your yard while still being a responsible steward of this planet.

Having spent part of my childhood in Southern Nevada, and returning many times, I’ve seen firsthand the shocking water level drop on Lake Mead over the decades. Being a military/civil service family my entire life, and living and travelling over a good bit of the country and the world, I’ve seen what a precious commodity water is and how different communities deal with it.

After six decades of moving every few years, we’ve finally found our permanent home. I’ve taught small-space veggie and herb gardening in the US, Germany, and Kenya, but have not had much experience working with ornamental perennials and trees until now.

Of course, I turned to chapters 10 and 11 first to make sure the information on food gardening was clear and accurate, and found it was even more comprehensive than I had expected. To help me on my new journey, I wanted a book from a trusted source to provide well-researched information to guide me as I change things on this property—like removing parts of our lawn and implementing smart water strategies. That book is Noelle Johnson’s The Water Smart Garden.

Kim Roman, Square Foot Gardening 4 U, and author How to Garden Indoors & Grow Your Own Food Year-Rou

The Water Smart Garden is an excellent resource for both those gardening in dry climates and those who are trying to conserve their water use in general to grow a more sustainable landscape. I was especially pleased to see author Noelle Johnson address lawn replacement and the use of drought-tolerant groundcover plants. Johnson's writing is clear and accessible with many practical tips and lots of ideas that can be easily implemented.

Kathy Jentz, author, Groundcover Revolution

"My favorite part of the book, however, is the projects. Unlike most books that just spend a couple of pages, each project has its own devoted chapter, making sure you have everything you need to properly grow and conserve water. Overall, I consider The Water-Smart Garden a must for any gardener, no matter their grow zone!"

Susan Bewley, Budget Earth

"The photos in this book are outstanding. While lovely enough to be a coffee table book, it is a clear how-to book that tells you how to “Grow a beautiful, resilient, and productive garden with minimal water”

Splash Magazines

"The Water-Smart Garden illustrates how to have a beautiful, productive garden while conserving water. This is a timely, motivational guide to stewardship of what is probably the most crucial element of life on this planet – fresh water. The book is richly illustrated; inspirational; resource-filled; and practical with down-to-earth projects."

I’ve learned so much from this author having subscribed to her newsletter after finding my Google searches often led to her information when I first arrived in AZ. As she started writing books I found it was a source I enjoyed having in a printed format rather than printing out information from her website. And her photos are beautiful. I love the ability to see how a plant looks when it is mature, as well as grouping other plants with it.

I need to know what grows best in this desert climate and how and when to water. I had already had a drip system installed when we had our landscape professionally done. But I have much to learn about the ways to schedule it with the changing weather and planting new plants in a mature garden with established zones. In this book Ms. Johnson shares great information on understanding how plants retain water, help other plants to use less water and ways of collecting rain water in artistic and interesting ways. I haven’t quite finished the book but I am already thinking of how I might utilize some of the ideas to shade some of the areas and add a water pot with a spigot to catch the rain water.

I was excited to receive this book today! After reading Noelle’s “Dry Climate Gardening” and subscribing to her emails, I had become a fan of her no-nonsense approach to gardening in the desert. Having been raised in Minnesota, the desert was a challenge for us to adapt to in growing a beautiful yard. We recently moved to New Mexico, I knew I had yet another adventure in learning to garden in another climate—a higher desert area. This book does not disappoint! The photos are gorgeous and helpful and Noelle’s descriptions and narrative about being smart about low-water need plants in any climate is really well done! She has done her homework and passes on her knowledge in an interesting, straight-forward way. You won’t be sorry if you buy this book!

The Water-Smart Garden is an informative and beautifully thought out book.
As someone who grew up and spent most of my life in areas that had more than enough water, the last 19 years in Arizona have been a frustrating experience. After reading this book, I have a greater understanding of why we failed in most of what we have done and some ideas on how to improve.
My biggest surprise was that the book had references and pictures of gardens that have water challenges in areas that I did not know had water challenges.
    I highly recommend this book.

With conserving water becoming more and more of a headline, this book is timely and relevant for all. This informative book is packed full of pictures and illustrations to expand on the topic being discussed. I especially like that the author included pictures of a successful low water garden along with pictures of plants that didn't survive and an explanation as to why.
I really enjoyed her chapter on rain harvesting and the steps to start it slowly yet efficiently. I am also excited to try some of the projects she has in the back - specifically the portable irrigation system. Such a great idea for those who don't have an irrigation system or need to supplement water to plants on a separate schedule than their current system.
If you're looking for a great resource for an attractive landscape using correct watering practices, this is it!

I am an eager amateur gardener who has lived and had gardens in different climates in different corners of the world. And I have made my fair share of gardening mistakes over the years. Gardening mostly by trial and error.

Not anymore. Now in 2025, I have this go to gardening resource that is going to guide me to think more strategically about what plants I am going to grow, where I am going to put them and how to help them thrive even in those months of 100F+.

AZ Plant Lady, this book is a winner, I especially love the color photography and thank you for adding the plant names.

I will be reading & re-reading this book, it's never going to get to live on a book shelf like an ornament.

    Thank you!

I haven't read very far, but I thumbed through it. It is awesome. The photographs are beautiful and easy to read and understand. This book is a winner. Just as Noelle is a winner. You don't have to be a master gardener or a professional, I have gardened most of my life, but moving to AZ I'm learning all over again. I've made a few mistakes, but my biggest was listening to a person that did my landscaping. I trusted her. I learned a very expensive lesson. Since I found out about The AZ Plant lady I have had much better luck. Now with this book I can learn about water. Please invest in this book. Thank you, Noelle for your hard work. It has paid off .
