They are England's most eligible bachelors, with the most scandalous reputations. But for the right woman, even an unrepentant rogue may mend his ways . . .
Lady Grace Mabry's ample inheritance has made it impossible for her to tell whether a suitor is in love with her— or enamored of her riches. Who better to distinguish beau from blackguard than her notorious childhood friend, the Duke of Lovingdon?
With no interest in marriage, Lovingdon has long lived only for pleasure. He sees little harm in helping Grace find a proper match. He simply has to teach the lovely innocent all the ploys a scoundrel uses to gain a woman's favor— by demonstrating his wicked ways. But as lessons lead to torrid passion and Grace becomes ensnared in another man's marriage plot, Lovingdon must wage a desperate gamble: Open his heart fully—or risk losing the woman he adores . . .

- Reviewed in the United States on April 24, 2014With her Scoundrels of St. James series ended, it's time to shine a light on the children of that ragtag group of individuals in Ms. Heath's new Scandalous Gentleman of St. James series. Grief and loss play a big role in this intensely emotional series starter that gives us wonderfully memorable characters, witty banter, and unrelenting sexual tension as friends morph into lovers.
Grace Mabry loves her parents immensely as they've stood by her through a traumatic time in her life. Because of this closeness she knows it's time to get married as she desperately wants her father to see her in her wedding dress before he goes blind. As her parent's marriage is based on love she wants the same for herself as she wants to be accepted for herself body and soul, despite the physical and emotional scars she now carries. To help her in her search she employs the begrudging help of her childhood friend (and crush), the Duke of Lovingdon. Not only will he be helping her he'll be getting the push he needs to reenter society after the loss of his wife and child. As he guides her through the clues to and definition of love she realizes she's still in love with him and it's a heartbreaking struggle to get him to see the truth of their closeness. Grace is a strong-willed woman who's comfortable being just one of the guys as she smokes and plays cards as good as they do. She embraces life wholeheartedly, and after everything she's been through and still has hanging over her, she deserves to live life to the fullest. Grace is understanding and supportive and will do anything to bring Lovingdon back to life, even if he won't end up with her. She's a wonderful heroine who brought a smile to my face as she often did the unexpected.
Lovingdon is a man in pain and after many years his guilt is still eating away at him. He feels responsible for his wife and child's deaths and it seems as if he's doing penance for his perceived failure. He insists he'll never love again and lets his self-hatred culminate in numerous meaningless affairs and drinking. Helping his friend Grace is the spark that slowly starts his journey to healing. He comes to realize certain truths about himself and that having Grace as just a friend isn't near enough. His descriptions of love soon hit too close to home, and as Grace is once again put in danger from a nefarious suitor, he realizes her importance in his life and rejoins the land of the living wholeheartedly in a race to save her from ruination.
Lovingdon and Grace's relationship was delightful to watch evolve. Their banter was playful but rich in sexual tension. Both characters have been through the emotional wringer but their mutual loss bonds them in an unexpected way and is seen in some of the story's quieter moments. Gracie's fears of rejection were understandable and Lovingdon's reaction to her tale was the epitome of romantic and brought a tear to my eye. Ms. Heath handled this issue in a believable and caring manner I've not seen in a historical work before and with an epilogue that further reinforces Ms. Heath's talent at handling sensitive issues. Along with these two immensely likable characters comes a slew of secondary characters, friends who have their own emotional issues but who are protective of those they claim as friend. These Scandalous Gentleman are intriguing in their own right and have me greatly anticipating the next installment in this series. From start to finish I was fully immersed in this story and the palpable pain the hero and heroine experienced. Their journey from friends to lovers was heart-wrenching at times but immensely satisfying and I look forward to seeing glimpses of them as their friend's tales are told in this promising new series.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 9, 2019This book was exactly what I needed. I was complaining I haven't had anything 'unputdownable' (totally making up words) and this book totally sucked me in. I started it pretty late Thanksgiving night and just kept reading and reading and when I finally turned my kindle off and closed my eyes, I laid there ANGRY that I wasn't still reading. It actually bothered me so much, I picked up and just kept reading haha.
Heath has another series prior to this called Scoundrels of St. James which is about the parents of these characters. Both the Duke and Grace from this book, their parents have stories from this series. I haven't read either, but it did make me want to try them.
Grace is ready to begin the search for a husband, at her father's wish. She has a secret that she is sure true love will conquer but doesn't quite know how to tell love from a fortune hunter. She enlists the help of the Duke of Lovingdon, a family friend, at least before the death of his wife and child.
Lovingdon has totally withdrawn into himself. Basically abandoning his family, he has searched out only the basic needs for pleasure to dull the pain of losing his family. Drinking and brothels repeat endlessly. Until Grace barges into his life. Grace who isn't a small girl stuck in trees with scrapes on her knees anymore.
There's an age difference here, can't remember exactly how much older the hero is, but I think its either 7 or 9 years? I thought it was done pretty well though. They have known each other forever and he never really 'saw' Grace in that light. He was like an older brother, a friend, and it takes a quite a few encounters for him to see Grace as a woman.
The things I loved about this book were the feels. So much of it was spent in the hero's head, and I am always a sucker for that. Watching Lovingdon basically 'awaken' after secluding himself in his pain, was oh so sweet. Grace was perfect for pulling him out his guilt. Grace was an enjoyable character to me. She wasn't super sassy, she wasn't a wallflower. She was a society darling and everyone just loved her, myself included.
My favorite parts were the duke slowly but surely falling head over heels in love with her. He first imparts advice 'If he loves you...' and states things Grace should look out for with her many, many suitors. But as time goes on, he is sharing his own feelings without even realizing it. He is sharing how he loves her and it's oh so sweet and beautiful. I adore his jealousy and how he doesn't know how to to handle it. I love how he loses control with Grace.
My complaints are the middle just pulling something away for me. I'm not sure if it was the little villain aspect, but I just wasn't as attached to the book after the midway point, but I loved the ending. The sex scenes I wanted to be longer. It felt like the book had so much tension, feels, and build up, then the sex was so short and almost lacked some of that feeling that was there. Just totally a personal preference/observation. I adored all the kisses and touches in this book. It made it amazing.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 25, 2014WHEN THE DUKE WAS WICKED is the first in the Scandalous Gentleman of St. James series. It is spinoff of Heath's Scoundrels of St. James series. This series details the lives of the children of the couple's in the first series. WHEN THE DUKE WAS WICKED is the story of the Duke of Lovingdon, Olivia's young son from BETWEEN THE DEVIL AND DESIRE. Lovingdon has changed tremendously from the sweet boy he once was. He was always good until his world fell apart with the death of his young wife and daughter. Lovingdon has become a wicked man determined to never love again because of his pain. One night he is approached by Lady Grace Mabry, the daughter of Frannie and Sterling from SURRENDER TO THE DEVIL. They have been friends and Grace wants Lovingdon's help in determining which of her suitors love her. In teaching Grace about Scoundrels and love, Lovingdon finds something he never expected to find ... a second love.
I absolutely loved this book. The book is a beautiful examination of love and loss. Both of these characters understand the fragility of life and by the end both have recognized that one has to love even in the face of potential loss. This is a book that is focused intensely on the emotions and relationship between the hero and heroine. The plot merely gives some structure to the relationship, but the plot is not novel or compelling. What is compelling is the beauty of the hero's journey. The book begins with Lovingdon declaring himself dead. Grace pulls him back into the world of the living.
Knowledge of the previous series adds to the beauty of the book, but it certainly is not necessary to have read the prior series to completely enjoy this book.

3.0 out of 5 stars a bit tedious and repetitive
There is almost no plot in this book it’s just sweet words and but of fighting. I guess it serves as a good introduction to the series though.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and touching
Loved the story of Grace and Henry. It turned out to be a lot more in depth than I expected beforehand. It provides a very moving insight into illness and grieving. I admire Grace for her strength and positivity. This story has brought, more than once, tears to my eyes. Loved it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!
You'll definitely need the tissues for this one. Lady Grace and the Duke of Lovingdon, childhood family friends. She loved him but he married young and became a widower young. A broken man she brings him back slowly but surely. She has also suffered but no-one but her family knows. The first in a series, a great start. I highly recommend this.
