4.0 4.0 out of 5 stars 1,163 ratings

"A cozy affirmation for introverts and homebodies about loss, love, and being enough." —Abby Jimenez, author of Yours Truly

She found the right guy at the dead wrong time . . .

When thirty-year-old post-double-mastectomy BRCA1 carrier and reluctant thrill-seeker Alison Mullally arrives at her ex-boyfriend Sam’s funeral to discover that no one knows he dumped her, she agrees to play the grieving girlfriend over the holidays for the sake of the family. Little did she know this would mean packing up Sam's apartment with his prickly best friend, Adam Berg. After all, it'll only take four weekends . . .

But Adam doesn’t want Alison anywhere near him. Forced to spend long hours with the grump and his monosyllabic demeanor, Alison decides to put her people-pleasing abilities to the test. She will make him like her. And after awkward family affairs, snowy mishaps, and packing up dilemmas, the two form a tenuous friendship . . . if "friendship" means incredible chemistry and sexual tension. Can Alison come clean and finally embrace the life and love she's always wanted? Or will her little white lie get in the way of her new, unexpected romance?

"Prepare yourself for a whole five-course forced-proximity meal! Alison and Adam may meet through the most contrived of situations, but their connection is all natural. Sure, Adam prefers to speak in single-word sentences, but his obvious care for Alison is warm and undeniably attractive. I mean the man starts storing Thin Mints in his freezer after seeing Alison eat them
one time. Who wouldn’t swoon?" —Washington Post

"The writing is lively, and the wintry Twin Cities/Duluth setting [is] good fun. . . The book really shines in its serious moments, and what could be more serious than being a carrier of the BRCA1 mutation (the author also is a carrier)?. . . Touching. . . Very much worth a read." —
Minneapolis Star Tribune

"A refreshing, seriocomic romance. . . Wry banter, compelling subplots, and escalating sexual tension infuse this sparkling enemies-to-friends-to-lovers story that examines sadness and guilt, loss, and grief."
Shelf Awareness

"Debut author Ellie Palmer is poised to become one of the most beloved voices in the romance genre, mark my words. If you enjoy romance novels with a heavy dose of sarcasm, vulnerability, love scenes worthy of several spicy peppers, and lots of tension, you need to add
Four Weekends and a Funeral to your TBR list. It’s one of the most unique yet authentic storylines I’ve read this year, and I can’t wait to devour Palmer’s next project!" —Scary Mommy

"An inventive twist on the fake dating trope." —
Katie Couric Media

"Twin Cities resident Ellie Palmer does it right in her debut rom-com with poignancy and heart." —
St. Paul Pioneer Press

"An emotionally resonant grumpy/sunshine romance. . . Alison makes for a deeply sympathetic heroine [and Adam] will tug at readers’ heartstrings as he juggles his attraction to Alison with his grief. Palmer also handles tough issues with grace, including Alison’s preventative double mastectomy after learning that she carries the BRCA-1 gene, and her all too understandable panic attacks. This packs a punch." —
Publishers Weekly

"These protagonists are realistic and likable and have sizzling chemistry. Their banter is amusing and witty, and Alison’s interior life is both frustrating and hilarious. . . This debut rom-com features peak grumpy/sunshine and friends-to-lovers tropes." —
Library Journal

"A cozy affirmation for introverts and homebodies about loss, love, and being enough." —
Abby Jimenez, author of Yours Truly

"I fell all the way for the slow, warm unfolding of friendship and love in this poignant debut from Ellie Palmer. From the wintery Minnesota setting to the banter over the best way to enjoy Girl Scout cookies, there's so much in
Four Weekends and a Funeral that reminds you of how special it is to find someone who quickly becomes your new favorite person. I already want to reread this book all over again; it feels like a comfort I will return to many times!" —Alicia Thompson, author of With Love, from Cold World

"My absolute favorite kind of rom-com, where laugh-out-loud banter, lovable characters, and swoony moments sneakily add up to something deep and beautiful. . . . An incredible debut!" —
Sarah Adler, author of Happy Medium

"Ellie's voice is fresh and real.
Four Weekends and a Funeral is a story about finding yourself and being brave enough to take ownership of your life, in addition to being a sparkling, heartwarming, and perfectly witty romance. I will read anything she ever writes." —Tarah Dewitt, author of Funny Feelings

"From the very first line, I knew
Four Weekends and a Funeral was going to be one of my favorite books. Ellie Palmer has such a compelling voice—razor-sharp wit wrapped up in beautiful warmth—that every word she writes leaps off the page. The fresh take on fake dating hooked me from the start, and the perfectly balanced mix of serious topics and electric banter made it unputdownable. I'll devour anything Ellie Palmer writes." —Jessica Joyce, author of You, with a View

"A charming rom-com dripping with witty banter and heartfelt moments. Despite their rocky start, Alison and Adam’s chemistry leapt off the page with the sweetest tension as their relationship progressed. But what was special about this book for me was the realistic exploration of survivor guilt and grief as Alison learned to accept herself and her new body as a carrier of the BRCA1 genetic mutation. As a carrier myself, I loved how this difficult diagnosis was handled with care and nuance by the author. A stunning debut! —
Farah Heron, author of Accidentally Engaged

"With her debut novel, Ellie Palmer has managed to accomplish what most authors never do and that is create the perfect romantic comedy.
Four Weekends and a Funeral is a masterfully penned, pitch-perfect romance full of humor, so much heart, and swoon-worthy moments as well as brilliant puns, poignant observations about life, important representation, and believable character development. Adam, Alison and all their friends, even the dead ones, come alive on the page and make you care so hard and pine for their happily ever after." —Meredith Schorr, author of As Seen on TV
"Brilliant and funny! Ellie Palmer and her exceptional wit gave me an emotional hangover for weeks. My hands down favourite read of the year!"
—Kate Robb, author of This Spells Love

"With a fresh and funny premise, electric wit and banter, and the best grumpy hero I've ever read, Ellie Palmer has created a perfect rom-com. Every moment of this story is filled with so much warmth and humor, and these characters feel like some of my dearest friends." —
Naina Kumar, author of Say You'll Be Mine

"Fresh, witty, and achingly cathartic . . . An unforgettable book that explores what it really means to live an authentic life when given the most precious gift of time. With a bitterly funny heroine, an endearing friend group, and a deliciously grumpy hero,
Four Weekends and a Funeral is an immersive read that beautifully explores life, love, and a smidge of fake-dating-the-dead after a preventative mastectomy." —Livy Hart, author of Planes, Trains, and All the Feels

"From page one, Ellie Palmer's debut sizzles with humor, heart, and a whip-smart dose of sass. This book reads like the inviting hug of an endearingly snarky best friend while also exploring the poignant details of life post-double mastectomy. This book simply sings."
—Neely Tubati Alexander, author of Love Buzz

About the Author

Ellie Palmer is a lifelong lover of love stories, a carrier of the BRCA1 mutation, and a prototypical Midwesterner who routinely apologizes to inanimate objects when she bumps into them. When she's not writing romantic comedies featuring delightfully messy characters, she's at home in Minnesota, eating breakfast food, watching too much reality television, and triple texting her husband about their son.

Firstly, I want to say thank you for the ARC, as always I feel eternally grateful. Now onto the actual review. When I read the summary for this, I was so excited. This follows Ali who was dating this guy. They broke up one month, and the next he was dead. While everyone was shocked, no one was more shocked than Ali when she finds out that none of his family realized they had broken up. As a true people pleaser, she doesn't really want to bring up the fact that they broke up, so she pretends.
She thought she could pretend for this one day, and everything would be okay. Little does she know that she'll have to keep the charade going for much longer than a day when she volunteers to help pack up his apartment with his best friend Adam. And of course things go from there.
This book dealt with a few really good topics, a renewed chance at life, grief, etc, and I thought they did a really good job talking about them. I will say, I didn't really love the romance. While Adam is a super cute character, the miscommunication trope in this was so strong, and I HATED that. I felt like it went on for so long, when it could've been resolved much quicker. Still was a super cute read though, and I think I would rate it a 3.5 stars!

    📚 Four Weekends and a Funeral 🎧
    ✍ Ellie Palmer
    📖 Contemporary Romance
    ⭐4/5
    🌶️ .5 (closed door)

➡ Alison Mullally has been dumped. Worse yet, her now ex-boyfriend suddenly died in a tragic accident before telling his family that they were no longer together. So, in an effort to support the grieving family of her ex, Alison volunteers to help pack up his apartment with his grumpy best friend...who thinks Alison was still with his best friend when he passed. Awkward tension, tentative peace offerings, lots of caffeine and a few trivial encounters ensue as they spend four weekends packing up the belongings of someone too young to be lost. But as they grapple with their own mortality, grief and hope, something unexpected begins brewing between them. But will four weekends together be enough to decide whether to pack it up or pack it in on their connection?

🎯 What I loved: Despite there being some heavy topics tackled in this book, the overall tone of this book was light and hopeful. I really enjoyed the bold personalities in Alison's friend group and everything that they brought to the story and her journey. There was some great (therapy positive) character evolution and I was grateful for the way that Palmer portrayed the work Alison did on her self. Adam and Alison's chemistry sizzled from the get-go even though their initial meeting took place at a funeral- it takes a lot to make a situation like that amusing but Palmer executed it flawlessly. This gave me major Abby Jimenez + Josie Silver vibes and I can't wait to see what she writes next because this was such a fabulous debut!

🙅‍♀️ What I didn't: I read both closed door and spicy romance books and can appreciate both in their own right but thought it was a little odd that Palmer opted to make this a closed door book only because the Alison's BRCA journey and subsequent relationship with intimacy was such a central part of the story. Although I always respect an author's choice whether they want to display on-page intimacy, I think there was an opportunity lost in this case to have Alison move past her fears through sharing that experience.

    Read if you love:
    *(dead) ex-boyfriend's best friend
    *grief+ hope+ finding happiness
    *found family
    *BRCA cancer journey representation
    *grumpy + sunshine

Palmer has absolutely stunned in her debut novel and has produced a must-read!

The characters are expertly round and developed, featuring very niche quirks that you find in your most interesting friends. The dialogue will feel familiar to fans of sharp-tongued, fast-paced Gilmore Girls banter, with poignant and relevant pop culture references and puns that will make you snort a bit. Four Weekends and a Funeral is a true page turner, and has the audience laughing alongside, and rooting for, the Minnesota cast of Midwesterners.

Audiences will learn (or relate to) the nuance of living with the BRCA1 gene mutation from Alison’s first-person perspective while being utterly absorbed in the unexpected love story. This novel shines as a representation of this condition in literature, and champions the heroine’s nonlinear journey to contentment.

    A total triumph!

My first book by Ellie Palmer and I was impressed. A different twist to fake dating and I definitely loved the messages from the dead. You really can't help but root for Adam and Alison as the story unravels. Alison really made her BRCA diagnosis part of her identity so watching her trying to figure out who she is dragged in some parts, but it was an interesting perspective to read about. She felt guilty for cheating cancer and that part was a little odd to me, but again I'm glad she got to where she needed to move forward. I'm glad Adam had his own issues to work out, but also was so accepting of Alison's journey. Loved how their paths were set to connect with the help of Sam. The trivia nights with the girls CRACKED me up. SO hilarious. A fun read and well narrated on audio as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars RomCom Perfection

It’s a romcom renaissance, and @elliepalmerwrites is on the front lines. The subject matter is tough (Alison is a BRCA-1 carrier, and the story starts with her attending her ex-boyfriends funeral) but also genuinely funny (no one knows she’s the ex at the funeral). The writing was effortless - moving between quick and witty banter, to meaningful moments, to comical situations that lead to deep discussions.

As a heroine, Alison was perfect. Having recently had a double-mastectomy, she’s trying to make every minute of her life count. Even if that means trying to be who she isn’t, even if it means trying to Eat, Pray, Love her way through her stages of grief over the changes to her body - she’s determined to not waste her second chance. The unique way her relationship with Sam (her ex) was presented was so real - she sees herself through his eyes. In her mind, she wasn’t strong or fun enough for Sam - but there’s no proof or truth to that, really.

Adam - aka the North Shore Grump - is one of my favorite heroes. He’s got a tough exterior but dealing with almost debilitating self-doubt that he’s pretty much stuck from moving forward. Sam, for him, was the pusher and the catalyst for him to take chances and risks. He was his safe space. And then when he’s thrown into the mix with Alison (delicious forced proximity!), she quickly pushes her own way into his life.

I loved how Sam is in so many ways the driving force for bringing these two together. Yes they have to team up to clean his apartment out, but he’s also the one that pushed both of them to be more, take risks, be bold while both of them find contentment in just being themselves with each other. And the fact that they are both in their 30s, with careers and passions and fears (and favorite sandwiches) made this feel like I was getting to know two friends and got watch them fall in love.

This was everything good about romcoms (it’s based on “While You Were Sleeping”) - heart, banter, amazing side characters, main characters that are built to be two halves of the same whole. It’s got sweeping love moments and sadness and everything in between. I truly loved this and will absolutely be re-reading.
