No Ordinary Duchess (The Greycourt Series Book 3) Kindle Edition
Cold and brooding, Julian Greycourt, the heir to the Windemere dukedom, has always known that his uncle the duke was responsible for his mother’s death. Now he’s determined to exact revenge against his uncle—if he can find the proof. But Julian hides a secret so explosive it will destroy him if it’s ever revealed, and the duke is watching. The last thing he needs is a distractingly sensual woman whose very presence threatens to destroy his plans.
Sunny and cheerful, Lady Elspeth de Moray doesn’t know why her brother and Julian fell out all those years ago, but she can’t let the autocratic man get in the way of her mission: to retrieve an ancient family text that she believes is in one of the Windemere libraries. Locating the tome, however, proves trickier than she anticipated, and at each turn, she’s thrown together with the maddingly mysterious Julian. And the temptation to give in to her family’s greatest enemy grows stronger with each intriguing encounter…

About the author

Elizabeth Hoyt is a New York Times, USA Today and Publishers Weekly bestselling author of historical romance, including reader favorite, The Raven Prince. She also writes deliciously fun contemporary romance under the name Julia Harper. Born in New Orleans, but raised in the frigid winters of Saint Paul, Minnesota, Elizabeth was fortunate to travel extensively when she was growing up and lived in St. Andrews, Scotland; Oxford England; and Kawasaki, Japan. She went to the University of Wisconsin, Madison, where she not only earned a degree in anthropology but also met Mr. Hoyt. Some years later, after a short pause to birth and raise two children, Elizabeth realized that she really wasn't qualified to do anything but Make up Stories and started writing.
Elizabeth now lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota with three untrained canines, a garden in constant need of weeding, and, of course, Mr. Hoyt.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 29, 2024FINAL DECISION: I really enjoyed this book for its strong character development and atmospheric setting, though it falls short in advancing the series' larger mysteries about the secrets between the Greycourt and de Moray families.
THE STORY: Julian Greycourt, heir to the Windemere dukedom, is searching through his libraries for evidence that his uncle murdered his mother while harboring a dangerous secret that could destroy him if revealed. Lady Elspeth de Moray is simultaneously searching the same libraries for an ancient family text related to the wise women's society, despite the complicated history between their families involving her brother being blamed for the death of Julian's sister. As they repeatedly cross paths in their respective searches, their initial wariness gives way to an unexpected connection, finding Julian surprisingly easy to talk to despite his cold demeanor. When a snowstorm strands them together at a remote estate without staff, Elspeth's resourcefulness in cooking and tending fires creates an intimate situation that forces them to confront both their growing attraction and their intertwined family histories.
OPINION: I found myself drawn into the atmospheric connection between Julian and Elspeth as they searched the Windemere libraries - their first meeting's playful sniffing scene perfectly set the tone for their unique dynamic. I continue to admire how Hoyt creates such distinct, memorable characters, with sunny, capable Elspeth providing a perfect foil to Julian's icy exterior. I was particularly impressed with Julian's complexity as a hero, whose cold facade masks both his secret sexual preferences and his deep-seated trauma regarding his mother's death. I found the romantic elements took an interesting turn with the inclusion of dom/sub dynamics. However, I felt the execution was somewhat uneven compared to Hoyt's usual deft handling of sensual content. I loved how the private library setting and snowbound scenario created intimate opportunities for character development. Elspeth's practical capabilities in cooking and maintaining fires added authenticity to their forced proximity. However, while I enjoyed the individual romance, I was disappointed that the book didn't advance the series' overarching mysteries more substantially – both the family murder plot and the wise women's society storyline felt minimal, with the latter element particularly lacking in development.
WORTH MENTIONING: It's been a long time between books, but I'm glad Hoyt is back and that this series continues.
CONNECTED BOOKS: NO ORDINARY DUCHESS is the third book in the Graycourt series. Although the romance is self-contained, the overarching storylines make this book much better when read as part of the series.
STAR RATING: I give this book 4.5 stars.
NOTE: I received an eARC of this book via Netgalley in preparing this review. I was not required to write a review or to write a positive review. All opinions contained herein are my own.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 21, 2024I really enjoyed this book and found the characters credible and original. I can’t help but think of Sarah MacLean on her FatedMates podcast discussing her love of the submissive alpha hero. Julian is the man for Sarah, and for many readers.
Hoyt delivers a beautiful and thoughtful exploration of mature intimacy here.
The story underscores the ways that society's anti-sexuality mores can injure innocent people and limit men from exploring vulnerability and genuine intimacy, an opportunity deeply needed by today’s man.
I think many romance readers would share my enthusiasm for this thought-provoking and steamy book.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 18, 2025I was not a fan of the previous book in this series, Mesilinnas story, but it was better than this. It’s a shame Julian’s story was ruined by him having a fetish and an annoyingly pushy heroine. I could have really loved Julian’s character and this could have been so much better. I really dislike this ridiculous wise woman plot. Was this was EH having to get in feminism?
Twice the heroine dodges a bullet. Ridiculous. There were a few other unbelievable things that bothered me. The female assassins. That was an eye roller. What was the assassin doing in her sisters house? How did she just walk right in? When the heroine was sequestered in the remote lodge on the welsh border, that she trudged to for miles in the mud, how did the assassin even follow her there and how did she walk out of there alone, unscathed with the assassin lurking outside? She never even tells Julian about the assassin, the attempts on her life. It just gets shrugged off. He has no idea someone was stalking her? He could have been killed. Worst of all she steals the book he is desperately trying to find, and hides it?! She went from annoying to completely unlikeable with that. Way too pushy, and easily promiscuous to be believable as a young maiden.
Also, the uncle, the big villain of this story, and the previous, what was the problem really? Is it ever explained? Just hatred? It didn’t make sense. Why did he hate his brother and his family so much? He became the heir. I just didn’t get it. Lastly, I found the love scenes rather gross. I don’t know what she was but she was no lady. As mentioned, she was stupidly promiscuous and it was rather raw and nasty.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 28, 2024It’s been a bit of a wait for the next book by Elizabeth Hoyt, and what a great read to end 2024. Strong character and world building-and heroes who always have something more going on than meets the eye ( yay for morally grey heroes) . A bit of a sunshine grumpy trope in this book-you can read as a standalone but the other two novels in the series are worth investing in. Looking forward to the continuance of this series
- Reviewed in the United States on January 14, 2025I learn something new every day. This book has given me insight into a rare condition that I have never heard of before. It has also given me comfort in knowing that, there are people who see past…..the super fiscal and are willing to dig deeper…. to find … the Diamonds in a person!!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 16, 2024Not the best of the series, but a good read. Looking forward to the next book.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 25, 2024Set in 1760 London, Julian Greycourt the heir to the Windermere dukedom has a shameful secret.
Lady Elspeth de Moray likes libraries; which is where she is discovered by Julian.
Each chapter in the story has a second story: Lady Long-Nose, a gender switch of Cyrano.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 30, 2024I did not enjoy this book. I have always loved Elizabeth Hoyt books but this one was not good. The storyline was weak and I personally did not enjoy a submissive hero. The Wise Women plot is also not believable to me. I did not reread the first two books and it has been a long time since they came out so I don’t remember either story. If I’m being honest, I did not really enjoy EH’s previous series as well. It’s just not my cup of tea.

4.0 out of 5 stars No ordinary duchess
Continuation of the series, which I like. Nice to have a physical copy.

1.0 out of 5 stars disappointing
Sadly, not the book I would recommend to all EH’s fans. It’s just didn’t have the beauty and style and heat and angst of her other books, and I can say this as I’ve read all of them and loved them.
