Seeing Through the World: Jean Gebser and Integral Consciousness (Nuralogicals Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 102 ratings

Seeing Through the World introduces the reader to the work of German-Swiss philosopher, poet, and intellectual mystic Jean Gebser (1905-1973). Writing in the midcentury during a period of intense cultural transformation and crisis in Europe, Gebser intuited a series of mutational leaps in the history of human consciousness, the latest of which emerging was the “integral” structure, marked by the presence of time-freedom. Gebser’s insights on the phenomenology of human consciousness has brought profound intellectual depth and spiritual transmission to the field of integral philosophy and consciousness studies, influencing the works of American historians such as William Irwin Thompson and the philosopher Ken Wilber. Further syncretic corroboration links Gebser’s integral age to those of the Indian revolutionary and yogi Sri Aurobindo’s “integral yoga” and Pierre Teilhard de Chardin’s evolutionary mysticism.

Arguably, Gebser’s structures of consciousness are as significant an ontological insight as C. G. Jung’s “reality of the psyche.”  Yet, until now, very little secondary literature has been available in the English-speaking world. Jeremy Johnson, the current president of the International Jean Gebser Society who has spent the last decade as an integral scholar and researcher, produces this introductory volume on the life and writings of Jean Gebser. Part companion piece to Gebser’s magnum opus, The Ever-Present Origin, part inspired treatise on an integral futurism, Jeremy guides the reader through the structures of consciousness and incepts integral scholarship as a divination that scries the age of ecological collapse and the ontological recodings of the Anthropocene.

It is the first volume in the NuraLogicals series, produced in partnership with Nura Learning.

“Seeing Through the World” is an indispensable introduction to Gebser’s writing.
5 out of 5 stars
“Seeing Through the World” is an indispensable introduction to Gebser’s writing.
To read Gebser is to embark on a journey and one needs a guide. Jeremy Johnson is the guide and “Seeing Through the World” is the guidebook. It is also a refreshing read on its own. One can sense Johnson’s passion for learning and living this philosophy. He offers a kind of mission statement:“What we are invited to realize in our time, just like the artists and the scientists of the perspectival age, is the emergence of the aperspectival world.“Johnson’s phrase, “invited to realize”, sets the tone for this book. Johnson gently leads the reader through Gebser’s integral philosophy. With clear definitions every concept is offered in a way that the reader feels no urgency to understand right away. One can wear an idea lightly. When it becomes clear there is real joy in understanding. I found so much more pleasure reading Gebser after reading “Seeing Through the World”.

I am a fan of Wilber's integral understanding, having written two books on it, but had never read Gebser who has been very influential in Wilber's work. I devoured Johnson's book and immediately ordered The Ever Present Origin. I also devoured that, although it took me three days! I am now absorbing both books and can feel a change in my own consciousness. Thanks, Jeremy, for so eloquently introducing me to Gebser and getting me ready to meet him!

I haven't read Gebser's Ever Present Origin. I have read and studied most of Wilber's books on Integral. Gebser's ideas, via Johnson, on process, time and space (versus hierarchy) are very compelling. I'm finding myself more hopeful about where in the world humans are and where we might be headed.

This book makes Gerbser's profound insights into our time very accessible. Unimportant book for understanding the present and preparing for the future.

product description says this book "introduces" the reader to Gebser's work. i was hoping then that it would help me get a handle on some of Gebser's ideas in the Ever Present Origin. no such luck there, while i'm finding the book an interesting read, it's just about as abstruse as EPO. author uses Gebser's integral-influenced vocabulary without any explanation. what is waring again? how do we "concretize" time? i'm sure he feels he's writing an introductory book, but i think he's forgotten just how difficult Gebser's ideas can be for someone with an average education in American schools and universities. still, with all that said, if you're interested in Gebser's work, you might want to have a look at this book...

There's very little about Gebser in English. This is a must have for anyone interested in the life and work of Jean Gebser.

I was disappointed. The author failed to clarify Gebser’s terminology or vision. In some ways this book is harder to understand than the original.

Integral - a catch word. How do you live it? Not simply an idea but an in depth way of being, The ever present origin is a vital perception.”

This is a small easy to handle edition of a breakdown and research into Gebser's originals. Easy to understand and informative.
