Product Description
Product Description
7 Pcs. Precision Shear™ Precision Shear™ Serrated Edge Forstner Drill Bit Set 1/4 Inch to 1-Inch.
From the Manufacturer
Precision Shear Forstner Bits feature a double-ground, razor-sharp serrated edge that slices throughout the rotation of the bit for less splintering and chipping, producingflawless flat-bottom holes. This unique geomtric design has multiple cutting edges that produce greater shearing action, allowing for faster rotational speeds and more efficient cutting. Competitive forstner bit designs produce small chips and dust that collect in the cutting area, increasing friction and heat, thus causing the bit to dull quickly. Those designs also create holes with rough edges that require sanding. In addition to serrated edges, Precision Shear Forstner Bits include a hardened steel body for longer life and sharper edge, an ultra sharp spur to ensure accurate holes and less "walking", and steep angled cutting edges to produce holes that are smooth and flat. This set contains 1: 1/4", 1/2", 3/4", 1", 3/8", 5/8" and 7/8" bits.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 5, 2024I have used these with my drill press and hand drill. Both grip well to these bits. These bits boar out he wood like butter. I don't have any complaints. Drilled around 120 holes with these for deck railing bars.

They come in heat-pressed plastic packaging that you can’t really store them in after you open it. It looks suspiciously like the packaging for the Fisch Fostner 7-bit set that is also made in Austria but twice the price.
Unless you have a bit holder with 1/4” & 3/8” holes, you'll need to make a wood box to store them in. The 1/4" & 3/8” bits are perfect for drilling holes to hold the shanks of all the bits. Here’s the box I bought and modified to hold mine.
https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B0085TG246/
I cut a piece of 1x1 stock to fit snuggly inside the box. Next, I drilled holes for dowels into the center of the 1x1 on each end, traced the outline of the ends on the outside of the box sides, and drilled the center of the outlines to fit the dowel. Last, I pushed the dowel through the sides of the box, gluing them into the 1x1, and trimmed the dowels with a flush-cutting saw.

Just ordered a second set for my home bench.
5.0 out of 5 starsThese cut amazingly clean holes. Shavings come out like hampster bedding which you constantly need to clear by pulling the bit up to dump them. Be careful with the needle-sharp center spur tips if you're using them in a drill press. Don't let them get anywhere near metal because they can bend or break off.High quality, made in Austria, no box

- Reviewed in the United States on December 18, 2023I do most of my work in oak. The bits cut nice and clean without any excessive effort. They need a bit of help with chip clearance but they are not advertised as a bit designed toward that. Glad I got them; a pleasure to use.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 19, 2019I was making a new set of jaws for the top of a friends Workmate bench and needed to drill both the dog and mounting holes. I bought this set as I had one forstner bit already and was very impressed with it's performance. These bits are phenomenal, you get the speed and feed right and they'll make beautiful holes all day long. They had no wobble in the chuck and with a sacrificial block underneath tearout was virtually nonexistent. The price is very reasonable and it had every size I needed to duplicate the old particleboard tops in plywood. These drill bits are a keeper!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 26, 2021This is not my first set of Forstner bits. I didn't want another cheap, disappointing set of Forstner bits but also didn't want to spend $200+. This set had met my expectations for a reasonably prices starter set of quality bits. They are sharp, cut smoothly and leave very clean flat bottomed holes. I've used them in a drill press and a little in a hand drill with great results every time. The vacuum formed packaging protected the bits from damage in transit but is not a long term storage solution so I'll have to make something for that.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 9, 2018I'm trying to build a bunk bed and I don't know enough about woodworking. Using standard drill bits I was causing massive tearout that looked horrible. These bits make perfect holes in soft pine. The bits even allow me to re-angle a hole I had mis-aligned. I can't do that with regular bits because they won't bite into the wall of the hole.
These are the first Forstner bits I've ever used so I don't know how they compare to other forstner bits, however they seem very well made and sharp.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 25, 2021I was skeptical about the serrated edges on these, but after using them, I'm a convert.
The cleanliness of the entry holes is unbelievably satisfying, and the ease of drilling even through harder woods like Maple is very impressive.
The bits themselves are very solid and trued quite well.
Freud continues to deliver great products.
The bits can be seen in the pic along with other Freud bits as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great sharp bits
Really like the quality. So cool to have the smaller sizes, which I’ve never seen before but imagine might be useful.
The only problem is that they come loose. So I 3D printed a box and an insert. The stems click into grooves on the platform and there is plenty of room for the drill bit heads.

5.0 out of 5 stars 7 mèches Forstner de chez FREUD

5.0 out of 5 stars 5 stars all the way for me
Brilliant bits, excellent value, the precision shear must be on par with the fisch or colt, cut like a dream in oak, no burning, nice exit hole, handle carefully as they are very sharp, if you compare them to the colt and fisch bits, which will cost you an arm and a leg, precision shear.... just the arm, brilliant bits, won't let my mates anywhere near them.

4.0 out of 5 stars disappointing
not the usual Freud quality ... they leave a clean hole, but they get quite hot and cut slowly even in Monteray pine ... Freud is my brand for sawblades and router bits, which are typically excellent, but these are not up to the usual quality.

5.0 out of 5 stars Like a hot knife through butter, almost
Sharp, sharp, sharp, did I mention thse bits are sharp? They cut nice clean holes with very little effort in softwoods as well as hardwoods. I have other fostner bits, some of them priced a lot higher than these and tis set is on a par with the best of them. I see people complaining about burn marks, This usually means they are being used inccorectly, pushed too hard or too fast, not perpendicular to the surface, not clearing the waste etc.
You might get some tearout if drilling right through a piece of timber but this will happen with any fostner bit unless you use a sacrifical piece underneath your work. These bits work very well, they do exactly what they are supposed to and I'm very happy with the performance.
Unfortunately I have torn the cutting edge off two of them already when I hit hidden metal in some timber I was drilling but I wouldn't hesitate to recommend these bits
