- Reviewed in the United States on September 27, 2023There are twists, turns, suspense, intrigue, lies…. Everything needed for a great mystery. The characters are well developed. The location is vividly realistic. The format is different but gets easier once you understand who’s who. Love it!👍👍
- Reviewed in the United States on August 14, 2022This family drama will keep you flipping pages. Ralph invites his two children and ex-wife, Sarah, to sun-soaked Italy to help him celebrate his 45th birthday. Still hopelessly in love with Sarah, he is crushed when she brings her boyfriend, Jack, along. To compensate, Ralph invites his much younger, on-again/off again, girlfriend, Gemma. Son, Patrick, lets girlfriend Anna tag along.
Once everyone arrives at the villa they will be sharing for two weeks, the fireworks begin, starting with Sarah announcing she and Jack are engaged and will soon be married. What ensues is a lot of anger feelings of betrayal, backstabbing, plotting, and ultimately a few deaths. Although the author plants a few red herrings, the ending didn't come as a shock to me. I guess I was hoping for a big twists. Still, the soap opera gloss, short chapters and multiple POVs kept things interesting. 3.5 stars rounded up to 4 for review purposes.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 1, 2022Ralph planned a fancy vacation for his 45th birthday. The guest list? His family. His two children and his ex-wife Sarah. Much to his surprise and secret horror, Sarah is bringing a suitor. This throws a wrench in his plans to try and woo her back to him by taking her to where they honeymooned. Not to be upstaged, he invites his younger on-off again girlfriend. His 20 year old son brings his girlfriend, and the odd one out is Janice, their angst-filled teen daughter.
This trip is already a disaster but there’s more to come. No one is grateful for the trip. Janice is lashing out at Sarah for leaving the family and bringing a date on dad’s birthday trip and his son’s girlfriend ends up being kind of a weirdo, getting snowflake-level offended over a harmless joke.
Sarah did wrong by leaving the way she did but Ralph is not without fault. When he had Sarah, he left her alone and spent too much time at work. When she did get him for a night out, he sat on his phone reading emails. He was too late.
Sarah has come to reveal the truth to Ralph about her relationship with Jack. It’s gone on longer than he knows. There’s more to the story of all of these relationships! Some wild dynamics at play here.
This was interesting but I also found it a little silly and unbelievable. The pining like a teen coming from Ralph. I didn’t care for the prose. But still an interesting vacation story which I’m into right now.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the chance to read and review!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 17, 2022Damn, this book was awful. I should have stopped reading, perhaps in the first few pages when I noticed endless punctuation errors and other sentence level problems. But the one thing book does do well is build tension--sort of--so I continued. Then it got so unbelievably bad that I had to finish it just to see if it was going to turn out as obviously as I thought. (Answer: yes). I read a lot, and I read fast, so I just continued. But let's see: beyond the obvious writing level issues (where was the editor? I thought this book was self-published it was so bad, but nope, it's Avon, who, presumably can afford decent editors), there was also the constant brand name dropping, the comparisons to celebrities, the dissing of Italy and Italians, the short present tense chapters which were misleading in the extreme and unbelievable, and more. There were so many simple factual errors that it became laughable to read. None of the characters were likeable or particularly believable. Characters were simply cardboard cutouts. And the "mystery" itself was not that mysterious. Really, this book needed some serious help--any decent editor should have been able to catch some of these problems, but the fact is, the writer should have as well.
Don't bother--this book is really dreadfully bad.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 11, 2022The prose is incredibly awkward to the point I wondered if it had been ghost written by someone whose first language isn't English. By the end I was suspecting a person hadn't written the book at all, that AI had 😂 It was a super weird read, rambling and idiotic. The word 'funereal' was used repeatedly to describe the Italian police. The red herrings were annoying because they were weak and yet at the same time there weren't enough of them. Very soapy and not in a good way but in a lmao way. I added a star tho, upping it to 2 stars because I did skim all the way to the end. I was kinda hoping for at least 1 tiny surprise but... nope.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 16, 2022Ralph Kensington has planned a 45th birthday party along the Amalfi Coast at Villa Panorama in Italy. He’s taking his girlfriend, Gemma, and his daughter, Janice, and son, Patrick and his girlfriend, Anna. Also invited is his ex-wife, Sarah, and her fiancé, Jack.
Sarah left Ralph and the children when they were only 9 and 12. Ralph has never stopped loving Sarah and would love to have her back.
Gemma wants to marry Ralph as he is wealthy man and can offer her an easy life. In addition, she says she is ready to start a family.
Patrick and Anne have squabbles as she wants to buy a number of things in Italy and he thinks she is being extravagant.
Janice has never forgiven her mother for leaving them so their relationship is strained.
When two party guests end up dead, many are left wondering what could have happened.
The story goes back and forth from one person to another which is an interesting way to learn more about all of them. There are lies, revelations, and murder. Who is the telling the truth? A good story that I’m sure readers will enjoy. The descriptions of Italian jails and prisons are enough to make one never commit a crime there for sure.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Party Guest
I loved the way this book was written, each character describing their thoughts and actions separately thus telling the progress of the story in their own words.I thought it was going to be an ordinary run of the mill romance story but it turned out to be an excellent murder mystery with an amazing twist towards the end. A book well worth reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Real page turner
Amanda Robson's best book yet, a real page turner of a classic whodunit. There is plenty of trademark obsessive behaviour in her characters, but they are more enigmatic than usual, with good as well as bad sides to their character. Lots of tension and suspense, too. Psychological thriller with a dash of Agatha Christie - what's not to like?

2.0 out of 5 stars Not a thrilling twist
I felt like I kept waiting for the twist to come at the end but I’m left feeling really unsatisfied.
The writing was good but the story was too predictable. I prefer my thrillers to really shock me and to keep me guessing but the only guessing I did with this book was wondering ‘Surely, there’s a twist? This is way too obvious’.
Overall, I’m massively disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good read
I enjoyed the few twists and turns in this book. The guessing was difficult.
There were a few bits that were a bit tiresome & longer than needed but overhaul a good read.
