Fantastic travel alarm
5 out of 5 stars
Fantastic travel alarm
The best travel alarm that I have used in many years. Well worth the price! Nice that it sets itself automatically ... according to the national "atomic" clock. But ... you will have to set the time zone. Mine came preset to PST. Do not know why the atomic clock cannot detect the time zone ... but a minor issue. Compact and seemingly rugged. Not waterproof. Easy to read ... with time, date, day, and temperature readings. Everything that I need to know. Highly recommended.

My wife was looking for a new travel alarm because her existing one had a small, hard to read, display.
This Marathon clock has a photocell controlled backlight that comes on at a dimmed level automatically when the room is dark. It seems bright enough to read the time. It also has a snooze/light button above the display that illuminates the clock at higher brightness level.

I was worried that the automatic light feature would run down the batteries when the clock was stored between trips, but a switch in the battery compartment allows you to turn off the automatic feature. The snooze/ light button still operates, so if the dim display is bright enough to be objectionable you can turn it off and use the light button to check the time.

The automatic time setting only took a few minutes (After I found that the auto setup on-off switch was in the OFF position, apparently by default). Setting the Time Zone and enabling/disabling DST was easy to do by following the instructions provided , once you locate the small icons on the display. I did not need to use the manual time setting procedure, but the documentation looks straightforward.

The alarm is easy to set using the front panel controls and has a loud alarm volume, unlike many small travel alarms.

The stand folds over the front panel controls and makes the clock quite compact, but leaves the display exposed for viewing. Whether a closed case would be more valuable as a protection for the display only time will tell.

The temperature display is a nice feature and helps resolve arguments as to whether the hotel room is too warm or too cold.

All in all, this clock appears to be a well designed and manufactured product at a reasonable price.

Small size, easy to see in the dark if auto night mode is switched on. Worth reading included directions to learn about all features. Five-minute read and setup. Easy to choose time zone. If traveling from the States you will have to manually adjust the time to local time and turn radio receiver off. Not a big deal. It keeps great time without the radio signal during short overseas stays. For the price this is a great little travel alarm/clock. Two minor issues: 1) reception is not real good. I live in Minnesota. I had a similar item for 15+ years that picked up the signal better. But, just find a location in your home to pick up the signal. I placed it by a window. That worked! 2) at certain angles it is difficult to read. Just move your head up or down, adjust the angle of the clock on its stand or pick the thing up. Again, for the money, NO BIG DEAL! I recommend this clock.

(To set the time manually, pls scroll):
This year I waited a day after daylight savings ended and noticed the time had not re-set (despite it being in the window, facing where the signal comes from with the atomic clock setting on). So I decided to re-set it manually. I pressed "re-set" and the close decided it was 2am, January 31 and a Wednesday.

I'd misplaced the manual, so I thought I'd try just pressing the clock icon, but didn't notice anything (I expected the time to flash). So, I took out the batteries hoping it would cause a re-set, this caused the clock to emit a loud, short cheep, but when I replaced the batteries it was still January 31, 2am. The third time I replaced the batteries, the screen stayed blank, so I had to get new batteries.

Fortunately, someone here posted instructions on re-setting the clock (see the Q&A). Here are my instructions:

    TO SET THE TIME MANUALLY:
Press and hold the little Clock icon Button. This will cause the Time Zone type (extremely teeny letters in the upper right corner, next to the time) to blink. It is VERY hard to notice this. You can choose other time zones using the up/down arrows or leave it on that one. Pressing the clock icon again will let you move on to the next setting.

You can bypass the other settings and exit the Time-Set Mode immediately by pressing and holding the Clock button.

For the second setting (after the Time Zone setting), the large numbers start to flash, but as a 4-digit number. If you hit the up/down arrows, the number changes, but at the same time so does the day of the week (which is displayed underneath in smaller type). Later on, I realized that this 4-digit number was for the year. If you want the correct day of the week to display, then you need to have the correct year. If you need to change the year, push the up/down buttons.

As you press the Clock button, the Settings are in this order:
    - Time Zone (see tiny type in upper right corner)
    - Year (4-digit number in large type)--this also controls day of the week
    - Month, then Day
    - Format (12 v 24 hour)
    - Hour, then Minute, then Second
    - Language (choose GB for English)
    - DST (to turn Daylight Savings on/off)

I keep forgetting how to set the time, so I wrote instructions on a thin scrap of paper and slipped it into the battery compartment.

    (My original review:)
This is a good, simple clock. I wanted a battery-operated clock for my nightstand. This satisfies my requirements: small, battery operated (so my alarm will work if there is a power outage), atomic clock (so I don't have to set it), with a digital display. I selected this one because I like the design of the face--the time is large, a good typeface and it also shows the seconds, but small so I won't confuse them with the minutes. I like that it shows the date and the day of the week, along with the temperature. You can choose between Celcius and Fahrenheit. It also shows the time zone and whether Daylight Savings Time is activated.

It is very easy to tell if the alarm is set. There is a switch in the middle that when switched to ON, it reveals a red square (very noticeable against the black clock). There is also a little bell graphic that appears above the seconds. If the alarm is on then the time that it is set to is displayed on the face of the clock INSTEAD of the date. It also shows whether the alarm is set to AM or PM. This is okay, but I wish that it would allow you to toggle to the date or allow you to choose whether you want the date or alarm displayed--but not a big deal. When the alarm is triggered, the beeps start off soft and slow and then the beeps come a little faster and a tiny bit louder and continue for about a minute. It's loud enough for me, but a sound sleeper might prefer something louder. There is a snooze button.

The face of the clock has a nightlight feature--it dimly lights up when the room is dark. I like that you can turn this off (I did to conserve battery, but I can foresee instances when I might want it on). There is a button you can push that lights the face for several seconds. It's easy to find and use.

When I first activated the clock, it didn't get the atomic signal. This is not a big deal, we have other atomic devices and they have trouble too (we are very far north, near Seattle). They get the signal eventually, so I wasn't worried. I set the time/date manually (easy to do) and then told the clock to look for the atomic signal (there are some buttons you can push by the battery). When I manually set the time on the clock, I deliberately set an incorrect time so I could later tell when it had been synched. When I checked a few hours later the time was correct (I was surprised that it did it so fast, I thought it would need to wait till nightfall). The only problem was that the day of the week was odd. Customer Service had already emailed me to ask how I liked the clock, so I emailed them back to ask about it. They got back to me quickly and that was how I found out that the clock is available in different languages. (It says so in the instructions, but I hadn't noticed). So the day of the week was in some other language.

Changing the language is easy (press and hold the button that looks a clock for 3 seconds. First you will see the time zone flashing. Next, press the clock button 9 more times until you see the language setting flashing. Use the up/down arrow buttons to switch between languages.) The code for English is GB (I assume for Great Britain?). Then I just needed to push the Clock button a few more times to exit the Setting mode.

So far the clock has been great and I'm happy with it.

I originally gave this 5 stars, but downgraded it to 4 because I usually have to re-set the time manually.

I have two of these clocks and love them, and the battery lasts a long time: two years for the latest clock I purchased, which came with its own battery. But when it stopped a few days ago and I opened the cover to replace the battery, I found a great deal of white corrosion in the case, on the battery itself, and on the springs. I figured the clock was ruined, but with a great deal of time and effort I was able to remove most of the corrosion, but not all. Nonetheless, voila, the clock works again. I highly recommend the clock, but I suggest that if you purchase this clock, you throw away the off-brand battery that comes with it and use a good quality battery such as Duracell.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Travel Clock
Reviewed in Canada on February 28, 2019
Bought this clock to replace an older Marathon product. The clock itself is sturdy, simple to use, easy to set and visible alarm switch rather than an LCD dot and the alarm is loud enough to wake me approx twice as loud as my old clock. Nightlight feature is great when your in a dark unfamiliar hotel room and don't know the time or where the clock is. You can also run the clock in manual time mode to avoid it auto updating time zones if you don't want the zone to auto switch.

I was a little disappointed the flip cover/stand was a little flimsy to open and close and no clear plastic window to protect the clock face from scratching/breaking when the cover is closed in your bag. No dual alarm as was described. You have to open the battery door to turn off the nightlight feature. Snooze is limited to just 4 times at 5 minutes each and then the alarm shuts off completely.

Reviewed in Canada on April 26, 2022
I purchased the clock solely to use for travel. The biggest plus is that is stays dimly lit at night, exactly what I was looking for. I can always see the time without pushing any buttons. The only downside is that is must be positioned correctly to see the time but not a big deal for me. Didn’t use the atomic clock feature. Very happy with the purchase.

I had had this clock for only one day and have found it to be exactly as advertised. I manually set the time at around 2:30 P.M Checked the time against my atomic watch and the time was off a few minutes. Left it and hoped that at 2:00 A.M it would set itself. Well, next morning checked the time against the atomic watch and they were both showing the same time to the second. I also like the back-light feature. Very please with my purchase. Hopefully it will continue to function flawlessly.

I have to return the item as the time wouldn’t set. I am sure it’s not well built, as I have another atomic clock that sets instantly. This one isn’t good. I left it in a window to see if it would set. 24hrs later and it was still the wrong time.
