NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

Discover the benefits of “eating your medicine” with twelve-time bestselling author Mark Hyman, MD’s unique Pegan diet, “a masterpiece on food and health” (William Li, author of
Eat to Beat Disease).

What do you get when you combine the best of paleo with the best of vegan? Pegan! For decades, the diet wars have pitted advocates for the low-carb, high-fat paleo diet against advocates of the exclusively plant-based vegan diet and dozens of other diets leaving most of us bewildered and confused. For those of us on the sidelines, trying to figure out which approach is best has been nearly impossible—both extreme diets have unique benefits and drawbacks. But how can it be, we've asked desperately, that our only options are bacon and butter three times a day or endless kale salads? How do we eat to reverse disease and optimize health, longevity, and performance? How do we eat to reverse climate change? There must be a better way!

Fortunately, there is. With
The Pegan Diet's food-is-medicine approach, Mark Hyman explains how to:
  • Combine the best aspects of the paleo diet (good fats, limited refined carbs, limited sugar) with the vegan diet (lots and lots of fresh, healthy veggies)
  • Create a delicious diet that is not only good for your brain and your body, but also good for the planet.
  • Take your cooking up to the next level, with 30 mouthwatering recipes such as Avocado Latke “Toast,” Chai Pancakes with Coconut Whipped Cream, Spicy Grain-Free Steak Tacos with Tapenade, Fall-off-the-Bone Short Ribs with Cashew “Couscous,” and Snickerdoodle Doughnuts

Packed with practical tips and advice,
The Pegan Diet offers a balanced and easy-to-follow approach to eating that will help you get, and stay, fit, healthy, focused, and happy—for life.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“If you are tired of the diet wars that pit one trend against another, you’ll be overjoyed at The Pegan Diet, Mark Hyman’s latest masterpiece on food and health. In it, you’ll learn how to combine the best of the paleo and vegan diets to prevent disease, heal the body, and soothe the soul. This book is a true roadmap for anyone who wants to apply the food as medicine approach to their health.”―William W. Li, MD, author of Eat to Beat Disease

“Read this book right now to learn how to use food as medicine. Dr. Mark Hyman has the rare ability to show you how to eat in order to feel better while also fixing our food system from the ground up!”―
Dave Asprey, author of The Bulletproof Diet

"Now, more than ever, we need to utilize the power of food to help our society overcome the epidemic of chronic disease.
The Pegan Diet offers an easy-to-implement solution for anyone to get started on their health journey using 21 basic principles that show how we can use food as medicine."―Arianna Huffington, Founder & CEO, Thrive Global

"If you want to eat for longevity, brain health, and gut health, this is the book for you. Dr. Hyman will show you how what you put on your fork three times a day is the most powerful tool you have to transform your health and the health of our planet."―
Eva Mendes

“One of Dr. Hyman’s greatest attributes is the ability to change his mind and advice when new evidence and studies prompt course corrections in his recommendations. This humble and laudable ability is on display in
The Pegan Diet, where hard and fast ‘rules’ give way to savvy, doable guidelines for achieving optimal short and long-term health. If great eating advice, without the ‘my way or the highway’ philosophy, is what you seek, buy this book!"―Steven R. Gundry, MD, author of The Plant Paradox

"The line between medicine and food is thinner than people think. Both go into the body, where they affect the overall health of the organism. Mark Hyman understands that, and wants to make sure that you do, too. His new book combines aspects of other diets you may have heard of, paleo and vegan, to develop a new way of living and eating. I prescribe this book!―

Great book, false description. (Updated)
When I talk about false description, the product page was describing the book as new, but when I received it, the book already had some highlighted word, meaning that someone had already had the book and highlighted those words, it also had some kind of business card for some weird hospital insurance. Now, with the book. The book is great, I am learning a lot about myself (physiologically), as well as to what is not healthy for me, we have been following the recipes and I can tell that I feel better, as well as my family.Overall is a great book, only issue that I didn’t get what I paid for.Update: after the seller contacted me and apologized for the issue, I was given a refund. I am changing my review to 5 stars, for how well, and professionally the issue was handled.

If you are looking for a diet book, look elsewhere. Mark Hyman offers a common sense, well researched, and not afraid to call it like it is approach to eating. I first ran into his work about 3-4 years ago after receiving abnormal lab reports…my liver enzymes were out of whack and I was so tired that I needed five 8 oz cups of morning coffee just to function each day. In my mid-50s at the time, I was mentally and physically exhausted and ready to call it a day by 3:00 p.m. I was not overweight and followed religiously what I thought was a great diet based on medically sound books from the 1990s which I discovered were now sorely outdated. An alternative medicine doc locally told to me get off of wheat and that was Step 1 in the right direction. Within 48 hours of doing so, I didn’t even need coffee to get going, but I was still wiped out and doing some serious soul searching for a new me. A couple of days later, my wife and I were panning through new books at Costco. She pointed to books that she thought I might enjoy reading. I bought both of them. One of them was Food: What The Heck Should I Eat? (Hyman, 2018). That book grossly altered the way that we now think about food. (Dale Bredesen’s The End of Alzheimer’s was the other book…another excellent, different sort of read.)

The Pegan Diet is a continuation of Food: What The Heck Should I Eat? - more common sense, more updates. I highly recommend both books. Three years or so after first adopting Hyman’s “farmacy” and “food is medicine” philosophy, my only wish is that we had more medical practitioners just like him. Dr. Hyman is bold, unapologetic, and very practical in what he writes. I have since read and incorporated several of his works into my daily routine. Although I continue to age, I now feel at least 20 years younger. My brain is sharp, I have amazing energy, and I no longer crash in the middle of the day. I cannot say enough!

Educational with some very good information. It would be better with recipes that use more "conventional" ingredients. Many of these would require that I drive a couple hours to get to a market that sells these esoteric ingredients.

Dr. Hyman has taught me so much over the years, so I ordered his latest book immediately (I also ordered a copy for my best friend). I just finished reading it. Overall, I didn't really learn anything new. Pretty much everything in this book is a repeat of his prior content.

If you're new to Dr. Hyman, this is a great way to dig in. But if you've read the other books, save your money.

Also, it didn't really seem like there was enough content here for a book - it appeared they were trying to s t r e t c h it out to be proper book length. The chapters are quite short (not a lot of detail), and the entire back half is just recipes. It felt to me like he owed his publisher a book and they just quickly cobbled this one together from prior content.

A little disappointing but I'm glad he is pushing this message of food as medicine.

Oh one other thing - he recommended a probiotic. I looked into it because it's from a company I already buy supplements from. It costs $102 for a 15 day supply. That's about $7 a day - and more than $200 a month. That is not realistic for average people, so just be aware, this entire way of living isn't for "regular people." I had to laugh when Dr. Hyman bragged about being able to "make it" feeding a family of 4 on a salary of $27,000 40 years ago; buddy, that's $100K today. A less privileged way of thinking about these issues would make a lot of sense for today's readers, I think.

One of the best & practical books about healthy living. You only have to adjust a few things in your meals & when you are eating them. For sure the 12 hour overnight fasting helps to lose weight. Reducing carbs such as bread & rice helps also. I was able to lose 4 pounds in less than 2 weeks. In less than 1 month I have lost 6 pounds & this is without much exercise.
    Thank you Dr. Hyman!!!
