Night Shift Kindle Edition
The bookworm and the basketball player are about to meet their match.
Kendall Holiday spends her Friday nights exactly where she wants to be: with her head buried in a spicy romance novel while she works the graveyard shift at her university's library. She knows she could join her friends for a weekend of drunken debauchery and college parties, but she likes her alone time, so she tells herself she isn't hiding when she gets lost in the pages of fictional love stories.
But that all changes when Vincent Knight, captain of the basketball team, turns up with an injured wrist, a sour mood, and a pressing need for poetry recommendations for a class he hates. Vincent is tall, smart-mouthed, and challenges Kendall like no one has before. Suddenly, she's falling headfirst into her very own romance novel—but it takes a lot more truth than tropes to get to a happy ever after in real life.
NIGHT SHIFT is a 75k-word sweet and spicy single-POV college romance perfect for fans of Emily Henry, Hannah Grace, and Elena Armas.

Kendall is a bookworm through and through. She would rather read about fictional men than interact with the guys at college. Like most introverts, Kendall is not an avid partier. Instead, she chooses to work the Friday night shift at the university library. It was during one of these Friday night shifts that Kendall met Basketball star Vincent Knight. Cue the awkward flirting, some makeout sessions in the stacks, and a few meddling friends. Fall in love with the characters and their adorable, introverted selves in “Night Shift”!
First things first, I LOVED this book! I was introduced to the author when I found an Instagram recommendation post on the author’s profile. Annie Crown pulled me in and had me begging for more! The tropes alone made me immediately try to find this new KU release. I was sad at first when I learned that I discovered the book a month before its pub date, but the day it came out you can bet that I immediately checked it out! Once I finished, I went to try to find it at my “local” B&N (it’s an hour and a half drive) only to find out that the paperback wasn’t out yet.
One thing that I felt made my read of “Night Shift” more enjoyable was that I read it through the lens of a bookstagram trend about the title of the book you’re reading describing your love life. While the title isn’t anything too descriptive, I found the story itself extremely similar to my relationship. Unlike a lot of college sports romances, this one had more mature characters. There were a few missteps and miscommunications (as there always are) but they were quickly resolved through healthy communication and vulnerability, even when it was uncomfortable for the characters. This is relatively rare in the new adult romance world. The characters were loveable and REAL. They had insecurities and dealt with them in a realistic way that didn’t involve going against their morals and values. I enjoyed the subtle but impactful character growth as each character got out of their comfort zone. The friends were solid in just about every way, even down to the not-so-subtle spying on a study session. I could imagine myself, my husband, and even our friends as I read this adorable new adult romance.
I laughed and enjoyed every minute of “Night Shift”, and I sincerely hope you, dear reader, will as well!
Favorite Quotes:
“My roommates call me a hopeless romantic. I let them. It’s nicer than being called a lonely hermit.”
“Life is far too short to let my shot at feeling like I’m in a romance novel pass me by.”
“One thing I’m definitely sure of: miscommunication truly is the worst trope.”
“You’re allowed to be horny, and you’re allowed to be sensitive and nervous and all the other things you are. You don’t have to be an archetype either. You can change. You can be whatever you want to be.”

This book has some spice in it, don’t be fooled by the amazing cute artwork.
Tropes:
He fell first.
Bookworm/Basketball star
College romance
I laughed throughout this book thanks in most part to the narrator. She is great and does great distinguishing between the FMC and MMC.
Kendall was doing her usual nightshift at her university’s 24 hour library. Little does she know that her usual Friday overnight shift was going to change her love life in an unbelievable way.
Vincent is the captain of the basketball team having trouble working on an assignment for his poetry class. With a bum wrist and overall terrible week, he makes his way to the university 24 hour library and comes across a very smart, beautiful worker at the circulation desk, Kendall.
Also they are both very tall. Which helps explain Kendall’s overall look on life. I pictured the actress from the movie “Tall Girl.”
The mention of Pride and Prejudice totally tugged at my heart. The explanations of tropes and just over all being a romance reader just spoke to me. I loved it. It’s cheesy in its own way and there is nothing wrong with a little cheese.
Would I recommend? Yes and if you can get the audiobook. 100% yes!
Would it be re-read? Yes to refresh my memory if there is a second book.
Great read! It would have been 5 stars, but there were some parts that were repetitive and Kendall could not get out of her own head. That made me frustrated but overall I still really liked this book.

🌶️ 🌶️
I really wanted to love "Night Shift" by Annie Crown. The premise was intriguing, and I was excited to dive into this unique take on writing. The way the author wrote the characters and dialogue was interesting and honestly captivating.
However, the overwhelming feminism in the book was hard to overlook. While I appreciate stories with strong feminist themes, the way "Night Shift" handled it felt heavy-handed. The constant, almost aggressive, messaging made it difficult to stay engaged. It felt more like a lecture than a story at times.
The first half of the book was promising, but the latter half was a real struggle to get through. The plot started to drag, and the focus shifted more towards the author's ideological messaging rather than the storyline itself. While I didn't "DNF" (did not finish) the book, getting through the last half was a challenge.
"Night Shift" had so much potential with its intriguing premise and strong protagonist, but the execution didn't quite hit the mark for me. The overwhelming focus on feminism detracted from the story, making it hard to stay invested. If you're looking for a college life story with a heavy dose of feminist themes, this might be the book for you. However, if you prefer a more balanced approach, you might find it as challenging as I did.
Overall, I don’t regret reading this book, but I won’t be buying a book-trophy for my shelf.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 12, 2025I thought this was going to be a soft, light hearted romance and it was actually a spicy romance. I liked it because it was relatable and heartwarming in the way that shy, introverted people really do tend to stumble into relationships with all the wonderful offset moments along the way. It was a fun read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sweet, Endearing, and Full of humour
Annie Crown created such an adorable mix of romance trope humour, endearment, with a little bit of spice…
Vincent is this brooding, tall, beautiful basketball player who seeks out support one night from the night shift library clerk Kendal. Kendal is this bookish, brainy, Romantic young woman who shy’s away from social engagements and love the tranquility of the 24hour library at her college.
Through a series of mis-communications, which Kendal herself declares is her least favourite romance novel trope, connects then loses connection with Vincent. With the help of a grand gesture, friends, and a bit of a reality check the romance is rekindled and their relationship builds.
This one is an adorable read, something I’d recommend when you just need that adorable meet-cute, an adorable fumbly couple, and a good laugh.
