Product Description

THE SUPERHERO MARTIAL ARTS CLASSIC FROM WRITER / PRODUCER TSUI HARK (ONCE UPON A TIME IN CHINA, KNOCK OFF) NOW AVAILABLE IN A 2-DISC LIMITED EDITION BLU-RAY!

Tsui Chik (Li) is a librarian who leads a quiet, unassuming life - or, at least, that's what he wants people to believe. In truth, he was once a member of the 701 Squad, a group of elite combatants produced by a failed super-soldier project. In kind with his former comrades, his central nervous system has been altered to render him impervious to pain. When several of his fellow test subjects resurface and embark on a crimewave under the leadership of their former commander Hung Kuk (Patrick Lung), Tsui is forced to use his extraordinary abilities once more. Donning a costume, he sets out to face his past - as the vigilante known as the Black Mask.

Adapted from the manhua by Pang Chi-ming and Li Chi-tak and heavily influenced by Bruce Lee's turn as Kato in The Green Hornet, Black Mask is one of the most entertaining movies in Jet Li's filmography and boasts action orchestrated by Yuen Woo-ping, who would later win an Academy Award for his work on Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Eureka Classics is proud to present the film in its rarely seen uncut version on Blu-ray from a 2K restoration!

The movie is great, but the restoration is questionable. I'm speaking of the quality of the picture of all versions in this edition. I was disappointed that the picture quality was slightly better than the DVD format. I would give it 5 stars if this movie was given to actual experts that care about films to fully remaster it in the highest quality there is because Black Mask deserves it. Not whatever this edition is. It looked like it was copy and paste and sharpened up from one to ten percent. I was so excited to have it in my hands to being sadly disappointed from start to finish that not a lot effort was put into this masterpiece of its picture quality.

I liked it. The plot was interesting. It has some of the classic Chinese wire stuff. Some good fight scenes. Dialogue is good. Too much of the "f" word for me, even though it does add to the characters. The action was intense with a lot of quick shot changes. At first it is annoying, but it somehow makes the movie "work". I think you will enjoy it. This is clearly worth adding to the collection.

the black mask is certainly less westernised than Jet Li's recent films, and has a very comic book style story and fight choreographing. It is about an elite group of assasins who 'feel no pain' due to genetic experiments, and plan to inflict evil upon asia, cue Jet li, the only 1 who can stop them. The good martial arts don't come until the last few scenes, and are often too fast to appreciate.
All in all, a cheesy film with a cheesy storyline, with just about acceptable martial arts. For better martial arts try the 'Once upon a time in China' series, or 'romeo must die'. For better storyline, try ANYTHING else.

Although thousands have flocked to their local video store to catch some more of Jet Li's fantastic moves after his appearance in Lethal Weapon 4, this movie is not one of his better efforts. There is little doubt that Li is the nastier, less PC version of J. Chan, however the Black Mask is not the best showcase for his talents. This is still a solid chop-sockey flick that entertains, though; there just happens to be much better out there.
