Two exes find themselves stuck at the same house for Christmas in this holiday romance by Ashley Herring Blake, USA Today bestselling author of Iris Kelly Doesn't Date.

It's been five years since Charlotte Donovan was ditched at the altar by her ex-fiancée, and she’s doing more than okay. Sure, her single mother never checks in, but she has her strings ensemble, the Rosalind Quartet, and her life in New York is a dream come true. As the holidays draw near, her ensemble mate Sloane persuades Charlotte and the rest of the quartet to spend Christmas with her family in Colorado—it
is much cozier and quieter than Manhattan, and it would guarantee more practice time for the quartet’s upcoming tour. But when Charlotte arrives, she discovers that Sloane’s sister Adele also brought a friend home—and that friend is none other than her ex, Brighton.

All Brighton Fairbrook wanted was to have the holliest, jolliest Christmas—and try to forget that her band kicked her out. But instead, she’s stuck pretending like she and her ex are strangers—which proves to be difficult when Sloane and Adele’s mom signs them all up for a series of Christmas dating events. Charlotte and Brighton are soon entrenched in horseback riding and cookie decorating, but Charlotte still won’t talk to her. Brighton can hardly blame her after what she did.

After a few days, however, things start to slip through. Memories. Music. The way they used to play together—Brighton on guitar, Charlotte on her violin—and it all feels painfully familiar. But it’s all in the past and nothing can melt the ice in their hearts...right?

A heartfelt holiday gem.
Ashley Herring Blake has crafted a truly heartwarming holiday story with Make the Season Bright. The ups and downs of the characters' journeys are incredibly easy to connect with, pulling me in from the very beginning. The storyline of finding yourself and your place in the world with the right people by your side was not only touching but deeply resonated with me.Blake's talent for developing rich, relatable personalities shines through, and I found myself rooting for the characters as if they were old friends. The balance of heartfelt moments and lighthearted cheer made this a thoroughly enjoyable read. It's a story that stays with you long after you turn the last page, leaving you with a sense of hope and joy. While it didn't reach a full 5 stars for me, I think that’s only because I wanted even more time with these characters and their world. Still, this book is an absolute gem and a perfect addition to your holiday reading list. I can’t wait to see what Ashley Herring Blake writes next!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/ 4.5🌶️🌶️🌶️/ 3

It's always a sign of a good book when you find yourself crying in the last act. And let me tell you, I cried.

MtSB is far more angsty than I originally thought it would be. The title and cover both scream that this is a happy, fluffy, fun holiday hijinx, but that couldn't be further from the truth. It's quite serious, and often sad in a mournful way. But it's deadly romantic, and the chemistry between Charlotte and Brighton is pure electric. I loved seeing them fall in love, both as teens and then again in the present day. They cannot help but gravitate towards each other, and it is so, so enjoyable to read.

There's a line near the end of the book that hit me like a truck. It's about how risking something to take a step forward is better than staying still in "just okay". I won't copy the dialogue here, but it is an absolutely brilliant piece of writing. That I highlighted and will be revisited again and again.

I really enjoyed this book. It's not a shallow Hallmark romance by any means. It is a complex exploration of grief, forgiveness, moving forward, and most of all--love. It's wonderful. It is a deeply satisfying read. I loved it. 10/10 would recommend.

This story wasn't what I expected from the title. However, it is truly a story of loves perseverance. Brighton and Charlotte have loved each other since they were children; but insecurities and lack of communication lead to epic implosion of the relationship. The two meet again by chance when they both go home with friends for the holiday. I enjoyed the book.... especially how well the author weaves a story and creates characters with such depth. The parts I struggled with were Charlotte's mother's character and Brighton's insecurities. These two things just didn't seem as well integrated in the storyline for me. But overall, I thought the story was really engaging. If you are looking for a cutsey, romantic comedy then this story may not do it for you. If you like a real life, emotional rollercoaster of a romance then this will hit the mark.

This book took me on a ride. I was so pissed at Brighton then I felt for her then I felt bad for Charlotte. I was all over the place. I’m starting to like second chance romances. I didn’t actually expect any spice but it was written well. I really enjoyed this book.

Some people spend the holidays drinking cocoa by the fire. Others spend them accidentally rekindling things with the ex they swore they were over. "Make the Season Bright" delivers a second-chance sapphic romance packed with emotional history, festive charm, and just enough well, this is awkward moments to keep things interesting. Ashley Herring Blake knows how to write messy, complicated relationships that feel real—even when they’re wrapped up in twinkling Christmas lights.

The story follows two women who were once deeply in love, but life (and some spectacular miscommunication) pulled them apart. Now, thanks to a perfectly timed holiday setup, they’re back in each other’s orbit, pretending they can totally handle being just friends while very clearly not handling it at all. There’s forced proximity. There’s lingering tension. There’s the kind of meaningful eye contact that makes you want to yell, just kiss already! But beyond the romance, the book digs into personal growth, showing how both women have changed—and how they might finally be ready to get it right this time.

At 3.5 stars, "Make the Season Bright" delivers all the small-town holiday magic and emotional tension you’d expect, while offering a love story that feels both grounded and genuinely heartfelt. It’s for readers who want Hallmark energy but with more depth, and for anyone who loves a slow-burn romance where the hardest thing to untangle isn’t Christmas lights—it’s feelings. So grab some cocoa and get ready to scream at these two to stop overthinking and start making out already.

This will help get you in the Christmas spirit. I loved the main couple, but the additional support characters were also brilliantly written. The humor is fantastic with many laugh out loud parts, but it hits you in the feels too. This will become my annual December read.

Their chemistry was cute and spicy and I loved the other characters in the book. The story was cute and easy to follow and had good pacing.
