“Sarah Adams writes books with heart and soul. They speak to the people finding their way and being unapologetically themselves in the process. I love her style.”—Hannah Grace, author of Icebreaker
Emily Walker hates having her carefully crafted world disrupted by anyone, most of all her legendary nemesis, Jack Bennett. He’s the opposite of the wonderful heroes she dreams up in her double life as a romance writer, which is why Emily was perfectly happy when Jack left Rome, Kentucky, mid-school year with his fiancée. The last thing Emily saw coming was Jack’s return at the start of the summer after calling off the wedding and ending his relationship, but he’s here to stay—as her colleague and her neighbor.
Jack is glad to be back, eager to renovate his house and work on the next mystery novel under his bestselling pen name. But when he realizes he’s now neighbors with the one woman who has always pushed his buttons, he discovers something he’s even more excited about—thwarting Emily and her petty plans to sabotage his return.
With their chemistry-fueled animosity at an all-time high, Emily accidentally sends an email to their school’s principal that could reveal her secret literary side hustle. She needs to steal back her manuscript, and Jack—she hates to admit—is just the man to help her. Surprisingly, he agrees. Will their unlikely alliance put an end to their rivalry? Or could it lead to a steamy plot twist they never saw coming?

Emily
I don’t care who you are, when you live in a town the size of your thumb, if you don’t like the way your hair turns out at the salon, you stuff it deep down and never acknowledge it.
And that’s exactly why I prefer to take matters into my own hands and not allow circumstances to ever reach that point. I tend to speak my mind, and have it bite me in the ass too often, so I know if I tell Virginia that I hate my hair after this appointment, she’ll never forget it. By noon, she’ll have told everyone in our zero-stoplight town that I’m her pickiest, most unappeasable client. The roasting and poking will start immediately, and by five-thirty when I go to The Diner, someone will pop up out of nowhere and say, Are you sure that booth is good enough for you or would you like the one we reserve for the queen?
And it won’t stop there. From that day on, they’ll put a plaque on the table that reads Table Reserved for Queen Emily, and nothing I do or say will get them to remove it.
And if it seems like I’m overreacting, please know this is the very same town that started a petition last year, complete with smear campaign, to encourage my youngest sister (who was twenty-six years old at the time, mind you) to stop dating Will Griffin because they thought she was too good for him. He won them over in the end (Annie + Will forever), but the petition with the final tallies is framed and hanging in The Diner alongside the picture of Dolly Parton posing with the town. And I do mean the majority of the town. They heard she had stopped in for lunch while passing through, and one person called another who called their cousin who called their best friend who called their aunt’s boyfriend, and they all showed up for one huge group photo.
Moral of the story: Never underestimate what the town of Rome, Kentucky, is capable of.
The smell of bleach singes the insides of my nostrils as Virginia—one of only three stylists in the area—combines the powder lightener with the creamy developer right beside my face. She’s mixing that stuff so slowly a baby could do it faster, but I keep this thought to myself by picturing the terrifying treasure chest I’ve created in my mind where I lock up all my most antagonistic thoughts. It’s made of black steel and has sharp metal prongs all over it. The thing is deadly and made for keeping the peace in my day-to-day life.
“Well—I don’t like to gossip,” Virginia begins, weighing in on the conversation beside us that Hannah (the other stylist) and her client, Shirley, are having about the reason our packages have all been delivered late this week. Shirley has been the receptionist at the elementary school where I teach for over twenty-five years. She eats gossip like multivitamins.
Virginia continues, “But I did happen to see a certain someone leaving Brad’s house the other morning.”
Brad is our mailman, if it wasn’t obvious.
Everyone other than me in the salon gasps. I’m too busy staring at the bowl of lightener that’s not going to mix itself as Virginia lazily sways it in front of my face. The sassy grin aimed at the other ladies tells me she has no intention of putting any sort of hustle into my highlighting process.
“You don’t mean . . . ?” Hannah taunts, pausing with scissors in one hand, and in the other, a thin section of Shirley’s white hair, held at a ninety-degree angle—pre-snip.
“Yes,” Virginia states meaningfully with a vicious small-town twinkle in her eye. Take a picture right now and this would serve as the perfect image to describe Rome, Kentucky.
“But she’s married.”
“Not for long. When Hayes gets wind of what his wife has been doing with the sexy mailman, I expect we’ll see Evelyn’s clothes flung all over the yard and the neon boxers Brad is always giving us a peek of strung up the flagpole.” She pauses and frowns. “Truthfully, though, I don’t think Brad and Evelyn would make such a bad match.”
As fun as this is (and I don’t mean that sarcastically because I can get down with some juicy gossip along with the best of them), I happen to know that the lightener already painted on the back of my head and tucked into foils is getting dangerously close to frying the hair right off my scalp. I need Virginia to get this second bowl applied ASAP so she can start rinsing out the back while the front processes. I’m naturally a dark-blonde and prefer my highlights to blend seamlessly—not shine so bright they signal extraterrestrials.
The bowl weaves in front of my face again, but I intercept it this time and balance it in my lap to whisk the hell out of this cream. As all good and unbearable perfectionists know, if you want something done right, you mostly have to do it yourself.
Virginia doesn’t even spare me a glance. She’s used to me by now. The whole town is. When they see Emily Walker coming, they hand whatever it is they’re doing over to me and dive out of the way. Usually with a smile because they know I’ll do it in half the time and with the precision of a military special ops agent.
I finish mixing and hand the bowl over my shoulder to Virginia, who is knee-deep in speculation about what could have caused Evelyn to stray in her marriage. My next victim: the stack of messy foils on the workstation. I pre-fold each piece, handing them up one by one as Virginia paints the last of the lightener onto the front of my hair. There wasn’t much left, so thankfully she finishes quickly, and while the front processes, she spritzes water into the back foils and towels them off.
I tune out as the salon talk show moves through the lives of various town citizens, airing everyone’s dirty laundry with a bit of but it’s not my place to judge sprinkled on top just in case the good Lord is listening.
Madison, my sister just below me in age who is currently living in New York working on her culinary degree, will be angry that I’m not paying enough attention to relay all of the tasty on-dits to her later, but I’m too lost in my head, thinking of all the tasks I can get done now that I’m officially out of school for the summer and no longer have a class full of spunky—yet delightful—second-graders to teach every day. I don’t like to leave loose ends, so I cleaned out my classroom on the last day of school even though most of the other teachers will clean theirs out over the next few days. In the past I would go and help them, but I’m not allowed to anymore. They banned me after last year, saying they didn’t need a drill sergeant with a clipboard telling them how to efficiently pack up their rooms. Fair enough.
So with the school year officially behind me, I can focus on tasks closer to home:
• Help Mabel repaint the porch railing on her inn
• Finish writing the last chapter in my romance novel
• Contact the city about the pothole on Main Street
• Call Annie’s Internet provider and haggle for a lower price
The last one is more fun than chore for me. Annie, the most tenderhearted out of us four Walker siblings, mentioned the other day that she was dreading making that call, so I gleefully offered myself up as tribute. There’s nothing I love more than going head-to-head with a salesperson.
And believe it or not, I’m not the oldest sibling of our bunch. That title belongs to Noah—but part of me wonders if my parents were too sleep-deprived somewhere along the way and forgot that I was actually born first based on how laid back he is in comparison to me. Too bad my parents are dead, so I can’t ask them. Actually there’s no one I can ask about my family history now because as of November, my grandma—the woman who raised us after my parents kicked the bucket—died too. Everyone is dead. Dead, dead, dead.
And yes, I do like to throw startling little facts like those into conversation whenever I can because shock is always preferable to pity.
The last guy I dated seemed really freaked out when I delivered the dead-parents line with a smile on my face. But these days, I’m happily single by choice. (There’s also a chance that I’m single because I’m an unlovable porcupine and got tired of the constant rejection . . . but that thought is terrifying, so I slip it inside my Metal Treasure Chest of Doom and leave it there right next to the memory of my first and only love shattering my heart.)
Virginia tips my head back into the million-year-old plastic salon sink to rinse and shampoo my hair. Rather than relaxing, I spend the entire time convincing myself my neck isn’t going to snap. And it’s not until I’m back in the salon chair and Virginia is plugging in her blow-dryer that I hear the name that has me doing a mental spit take.
“Well, I’ve got my own bit of news to share. Did y’all hear about Jack Bennett?” I doubt Shirley realizes that with that one name she has successfully stopped my heart.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 7, 2025Once again, Sarah Adams hits it out of the park. Her books never steer me wrong. They are the perfect combination of sweet and funny and as always, the banter is fantastic. I love reading about the members of Rome, KY and the Walker family, and this book is no different!
This book is about the oldest Walker sister who is a second grade teacher and moonlights as a romance author. She butts heads with an old rival recently returned to town named Jackson Bennett. Their chemistry and rivalry only grows after they become neighbors. I love that Sarah Adams gives both of their first person perspectives throughout the novel. It was a delight to get to know more about Emily. As always with Sarah Adams, she weaves in a deeper emotional depth to both characters.
Another thing I love about this series is the female friendships. They are loving and supportive with zero level of competition or pettiness. It makes these books a delight to read. It just adds to the amazing layers that make Sarah Adam's books sparkle.
This book is a great read just before Valentines Day (even though the novel is set in the summer). I cannot get over how cute the cover is!
You can absolutely read and enjoy this book as a standalone. But if you have read When in Rome and Practice Makes Perfect, you will love the little cameos of characters from those novels. And I loved getting the tiny bits of foreshadowing for the next and last Rome novel! I love that we get to still see glimpses of characters that I love from the previous books and small updates on their lives.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 27, 2025This is the 3rd book in the series and I didn’t know that until I had read a few chapters. Still not sure if it matters though, because I fell in love with all the characters. The book has good banter that makes you laugh and roll your eyes, but it’s full of sweetness that makes you wish fora family like theirs.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 14, 2025Emily and Jackson (Jack)'s banter is unmatched. I was able to lose myself in their world and feel their feelings surrounding one another. While both characters share they are one another's "nemesis," it was also very apparent that they were passionate about each other. They loved seeing each other fired up, riding on the high of feeling open and vulnerable to one another even when it was just fighting about mundane things. As readers, we watch their, sometimes unwanted, love for each other grow and it was refreshing to see two people grow closer without a damaging, third act conflict.
As individual characters, Emily and Jack had such depth to them that I feel like I personally know them and/or see parts of myself in them. Sarah Adams discusses sensitive topics such as grief, anxiety, and dealing with difficult parents, and does it in a way that makes the readers believe that IT’S OKAY to struggle sometimes. Jack and Emily are empathetic, kind-hearted, passionate, and loving characters and it was written beautifully. I haven't even mentioned Emily's family and the city of Rome and they played a HUGE part in creating the cozy, tender setting of the book.
All in all, I loved this book. Five star, no questions asked, will be recommended to everyone who wants to indulge themselves in an easy read.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 6, 2025i believe this is book 3/3 and I had no difficulty reading it as a standalone which I love because asking me to read a series is like asking me to eat raw fish, I won’t (rarely will) do it lmao. I found the FMC Emily to be so relatable. I love a small town vibe where everyone knows everything. It kind of makes me think of Gilmore Girls and how that vibe is portrayed now as I’m reflecting back on the book. I wrote a few notes of course that Emily is so relatable to me but also noted how another character mentions liking romance books because of the strong friendship and strong relationships. I feel that! I especially love when they work through life troubles, hardships, & drama on top of their romance. It makes it more…. (my favorite word today) relatable, seeing real life in addition to the main theme - the romantic connection. Pretty sure this was a new release and I really liked it!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 4, 2025An enjoyable but forgettable read. Good writer, nice pacing, lovely characters and good chemistry. A nice read but nothing that really stands out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect romance book 💕
This is favorite book in the series, I absolutely loved it and Jack & Emily stole my heart !
I loved the characters development as much as the story and found their love story incredibly cute and "real". I also loved their maturity.
Jack and Em have amazing chemistry and I loved how them being "nemesis" brought some nice banter ! So many moments had me giggling ! The Magic Mike scene on the bike was hilarious lol
As they learn to really know each other it's clear they have more in common than they thought and I really enjoyed how their relationship was built. Being able to really be themselves around each other makes them feel both safe and vulnerable and it was nice seeing that side of them.
Both of their side plot with their family also brought something to the story which was great.
Jack Bennett definitely stole my heart ! He's the first mmc that really sounds "real" and relatable to me, like he could be a guy some of us meet ! (Don't get me wrong I love mafia bosses, CEOs, and hockey players but they're a little less "real" if that makes sense lol).
I also loved Emily and related to her a lot, I loved how loving and funny she was !
There's no spice in this book but the perfect hint of heat that had me swooning and melting !
As always with Sarah Adams, it was cute, funny and definitely romantic !

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it!
This book was absolute perfection and you can't convince me otherwise.
I love the first two books in the series and was so excited to return to Rome, Kentucky a little earlier than expected.
As always I loved the small town and the people who live there - especially Mabel! :D
Jack and Emily were perfect for each other, but I like that they were kind of rivals first. Their banter and bickering was top notch and it was really cute how they became friends first, before starting something.
Even though this a heartwarming, cute and fun story, I did cry a few times as it also deals with difficult childhoods and traumas, loosing your parents at a young age, being the oldest sister, fear of loss, etc.
5 stars, you have to read it!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly made up of everything beautiful, achingly tender and soothing ❤️❤️❤️
WHAT AN ABSOLUTE GEM OF A BOOK, I fell head over heels and irrevocably in love with Jack and Emily and their beautiful, beautiful relationship! It was everything my heart needed and more. Every bit of their story - felt like a gentle hug to my soul, like a cocoon wherein one can just be and an absolute solace which envelopes you with never ending comfort and healing warmth. I don't even know where to start from because everything about the book is just SO UNBELIEVABLY INCREDIBLE! So, so unbelievably incredible, I'm in awe. It made me giggle, laugh, swoon, cry out of happiness and genuineness, dreamy sigh, smile, melt, shake and squeal throughout! From start to finish - it was a mesmerizing, liberating and riveting journey that I couldn't get enough of. I LOVE SARAH ADAMS AND HER BOOKS SO MUCH! It's impossible to put into words what and how much her sensitive writing has meant to me. It has found me on the worst of days, through the most troubling phases of life and held me in it's reassuring softness. Her books have not just made me smile and feel at home during those hard days but have made me see, love, cherish and own the parts of myself that I have a difficult time accepting. Her words have given me the confidence to be myself without pushing myself to be someone I'm not. Without wanting to do away with those parts of myself which define me but which have often been harshly criticised or judged by others. I seriously have no words to thank her enough for it. She really makes the healing magic of fiction come alive. Her stories stay with me, hold me close, cheer me on, encourage me and make me feel loved and celebrated - always. The meaningful and earnest journeys all her characters go through during the book - hold such immense value for me. And the romance!!!! AHHHH UEGAISGEUEH - I'M LOSING MY MIND. So, so, so tender, heart fluttering, BEAUTIFUL and absolutely dreamy. The banter, conversations, dynamics, deep friendship and unconditional love between Jack and Emily was woven with such care! My heart is pained that the book is over because I wanted it to go on and on. I loved spending time with them SO much and wasn't ready to let go, hehe! They both made my heart theirs in no time and it'll always be theirs. Please go for this book without any second thoughts - it's emotional depth, life giving, gently warm and healing platonic relationships, tender, dreamy love, crackling chemistry, 11/10 banter, pure comfort, HILARIOUS instances and dynamics, moments that'll make you clutch your heart and dissolve into a puddle, that'll make you swoon and leave you in an absolute daze and people so endearing, earnest and beautifully human that you'll find yourself rooting for them from the very beginning. I wish I could just go to Rome, Kentucky right now and envelope every single fictional being in this story the closest to my heart because words don't seem enough to convey how much they mean to me and just how much of an impact they've had on my life! I'm eternally grateful to be able to experience Sarah's soulful writing which makes me feel at home like nothing else does. 🥺💌🫶🏼

5.0 out of 5 stars loved it
This was a great book featuring Emily and Jackson. The rivalry and bickering is entertaining. I enjoyed seeing their relationship progress over the 13 years with the author giving us some insight into the past with their emails.
