My Inconvenient Duke: A Difficult Dukes Novel Kindle Edition
USA Today bestselling author Loretta Chase continues her Difficult Dukes series with this charming brother’s best friend second-chance historical romance.
Of all the dukes in all the world, why does it have to be him?
Lady Alice Ancaster needs a husband, and fast, because her reckless brother is going to get himself killed, leaving the dukedom—and her future—in their repellent cousin’s clutches.
The Duke of Blackwood has known Alice since childhood, and they’ve always had a special connection. But years ago he broke it, when he chose a riotous life with his two best friends instead of a reasonable one with her.
The trouble is, the tall, dark, sardonic rogue keeps turning up exactly when needed, and ready—though he sometimes needs a push—to play the hero, if only for as long as it takes.
Being irresistibly drawn to the Wrong Man is not convenient, but when events come to a crisis, Alice has to make a choice. The question is, can she live with it?

Loretta Chase has worked in academe, retail, and the visual arts, as well as on the streets—as a meter maid—and in video, as a scriptwriter. She might have developed an excitingly checkered career had her spouse not nagged her into writing fiction. They have been published in a great many different languages, which she wishes she could read.

Unfortunately rather forgettable, but a unique execution on the idea.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 2, 2025I’ve really enjoyed the Difficult Dukes series and was so excited when this, the final book, was released. Because I’d read them so long ago, I reread Duke in Shining Armor and Ten Things I hate About the Duke before jumping in to Alice and Blackwood’s story. And I’m so glad I did; it was so much fun revisiting the humor and romance and fabulous plots that are a signature of Loretta Chase’s writing. And My Inconvenient Duke did not disappoint! Another wonderful strong heroine from Ms Chase - she writes them so well - and a hero who is worthy of her. So what to read now? I’m going back to The Dressmakers series; time for a reread!
Side note: Will Ms Chase ever share the story of Lady Charles Ancaster and Lord Frederick? One can only hope because they are fascinating characters who deserve a late life HEA!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 23, 2025Lady Alice has decided it is past time for her to find a husband. Her immediate family consists of one brother. Her brother is a duke who has a reputation for being pretty much worthless. He is one of a trio of dukes who have spent their lives acting stupid, impetuous and basically showing all the reasons there should be no upper class.
Alice’s first important suitor is a gentleman in his forties. He is not particularly exciting, but that makes him attractive to Alice. He is intelligent and finds Alice perfect.
One of the three dukes, Blackwood, has been in love with Alice since they were children.
He has carried his love as a secret since they were children. Her brother told him that he did not trust Blackwood to treat Alice’s heart well.
Loretta Chase is one of the most talented authors of romance I have read. And she creates wonderful characters who are charming, humorous and admirable.
Alice and Blackwood have all those qualities. I liked them very much. But at times I felt the plot dragged.
There is a villain who seems to be insane in his devotion to doing unspeakable things. He is a cousin to Alice and he is definitely someone who would make a family rethink producing children.
This book is romantic. Blackwood is a very romantic hero. Now that he has become more mature he is not a flashy guy. But, when he is needed he is there to save the day. He has a wonderfully kind heart. And he is tall so he can find Alice in a crowd. And he does.
Alice is a very strong woman. Powerful like a “today” woman much more than a Regency woman. She is intelligent and humorous and she lives in her head a lot. The fact she ius one of the most beautiful women in London, is a plus.
This is a good read. There were a few times I felt that it went too slowly for me. But, it is a fun book and falling in love with Alice and Blackwood is easy to do .
- Reviewed in the United States on March 5, 2025This is the third book in the Difficult Dukes trilogy. This novel takes place before, during, and after the first two books and neatly wraps up the trilogy. I've been reading Loretta Chase's romances for many years and I was looking forward to the Duke of Blackwood and Alice's story. I was very pleased with how Loretta brought the series to a close. It was also nice to read a historical romance that wasn't part of the English Regency period. The trilogy takes place in the early 1830's and takes place during a relatively short period of time. Loved the book and the whole trilogy, in fact, I love all of Loretta's romances, particularly her sense humor which makes me giggle.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 8, 2025The Difficult Dukes series is so much fun. I love witty humorous dialogue and farsical situations managed so deftly by a writer. These books are on a par with my favorite books by Georgette Heyer, Lisa Kleypas, Tessa Dare, and Eloisa James. I highly recommend these books, especially for the dialogue.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 27, 2025Library book. I had to give up around 50% being incredibly tired of hearing all about how women were not "equal" in Britain’s’ 1800s. I know. I get it. I lived through the 70’s and 80’s as a young woman. I don’t need a historical fact continually thrown in my face in a historical romance novel. Get over it!
I also don’t need to hear all about the social issues in Britain’s 1800’s and how horrible "society" was. There were issues everywhere, and thank goodness, the world has changed. High horse = not needed. Tell a story. If you want to pontificate, do so in a current setting based on the current world.
I remembered this author fondly, but no more.

2.0 out of 5 stars Soooooo boring
The whole book is just dull and whiny. No chemistry between Alice and Blackwood. In the previous books, it was hinted that their marriage was not going well for major reasons. We get to find out they were just bored.

1.0 out of 5 stars Boring and Pointless
I am or was a great fan of Loretta Chase and I have all her books.
But this book was so inane, so boring, so pointless it was an absolute waste of time and money.

5.0 out of 5 stars brilliant!
Such fun! And what exciting yet familiar characters, from the highest ranks to the lowest. As always, having galloped my way through the book, I can’t wait to read it again, and worse, I can’t wait for the next one!
