Synopsis

Goro Mutsumi has been plagued by a string of bad luck all his life. Bad things kept happening to him - until the day when suddenly a trio of cute girls showed up at his home and turned his life upside down. It turns out that they are Guardian Angels - but not exactly what you'd imagine when you hear that word. They are the revenant spirits of pets that Goro once had, namely a goldfish, a hamster and a parakeet. They've come back as girls to serve and protect him from bad luck.
It's doesn't take long and more girls are popping up, one after another, until Goro finally shares his home with twelve Guardian Angels, all of them being pets that he lost earlier - and constantly struggling with each other who get's the most of Goro's time.

Genre: Romance/Comedy

It's a bit hard to tell what the directors intended with this one, apart from showing a large bunch of really cute girls (not that that would be such a bad thing.)
The stories are highly episodical, and mostly based on one of the girls that arrived latest, then - so there isn't any visible background plot until episode 9, where a small arc about the "Four Beast Gods" takes place. Of course there's a good share of comedy, although it isn't the usual "anime slapstick" but rather a friendly kind of character comedy.

Characters

Well, a series with 12 episodes and twelve girls will have a very hard time fleshing out all of them, and so this is one of the weaker points of "Angel Tail". Only about five of the girl characters are passably well-rounded, while the others don't get enough screen time to really develop much visible charisma.
It helps that they all have easy-to remember personalities, but still you can't call a character "detailed" when you're able to perfectly sum all his traits up with two or three prompts. And while a few of them are very entertaining, the overall setup sometimes feels a bit too cluttered.

Animation/Design

The animation level is fine and smooth, but nothing to be particularly enthusiastic about. The facial designs are just characteristic enough to stand out a bit, but are still easily likeable. Average scores here.

Music

The opening sounds rather childish - but the melody is extremely catchy. *hums* I for my part found myself listening to the whole intro each time I watched another episode.

Finishing Line

Well, maybe 12 is just a bit much for such a short series... and while the whole "pets as girl guardian angels" is a nice idea, I'd say the directors didn't make enough use of the chances that it offered them.
The main positive thing about "Angel Tail" are the cute girls - you can be sure to find a likeable one among them and enjoy the funny collisions afterwards. Still, there are so many of them that some of them only star' in one or two episodes and then just silently trod along in all the others. Still, a second season is currently produced&aired in Japan, so there is a good chance that the so-far-side-cast charas will get fleshed out a bit more with the time. *hopes*

"Angel Tail" offers a nice share of romance and a crateload of cute girls, bundled with some great and some average humor. Watching it is not a "must" at all, but if you're currently sitting around wondering what anime to watch next, "Angel Tail" is a good idea.
