I'm very disappointed in some of the reviews Popotan is getting. It pisses me off that everyone thinks the ecchi is the 'best part' of this anime. You people sicken me. Sure, it's an H-game turned anime, it's an ecchi overload and seemingly has a small plot, but, Popotan is so much more. This anime is very special and is one of my personal favorites. I really cannot stretch how emotional Popotan gets in the end. Very underrated.
I am very shocked at the ending of this anime. It nearly brought me to tears, it was so wonderful. Oh, and I would just like you to know that this anime does have tons of drama in it.
Anyhow, Popotan started off slow, and I'm glad I had waited to review this until the end or else I would have given it very low ratings. The story, I still do not understand. What were they searching for? Why were they talking to the tanpopo? Who knows. But perhaps that is what was meant to happen; you know, to leave you wondering. Every episode that I thought was a filler actually added up to the ending, and every episode had a purpose.
And, I'm sure you have heard there is a lot of fanservice in this anime. Well, the fanservice is not at all what this anime is about. Yes, there is a bath scene in every episode, but it's mainly just a time to discuss things, and the nudity is to keep those perverted old men watching. Actually, it is very dramatic towards the end, and Popotan is not all about ecchi at all.
In fact this is the first anime that even got me close to crying. Only the first half of the anime was comedy, and at the second half, it was complete drama.
At first the story was weak, then it became the strongest point of the show. Any episode that was a considered a filler at the beginning, it actually added up to the ending. Mai's story definitely had more potential than the others, and was alittle bit different as well. Her's was pretty much like a two parter, while Mii and Ai's second stories were hardly connected to the first.
They're all cute characters, very well drawn and portrayed. I love anything by this character designer. (Nurse Witch Komugi, other cute stuff that's all shiny and very detailed...) Poyoyon Rock are great character designers.
The animation isn't the strongest point; the movements aren't smooth although the art style is beautiful. It's excellent for a TV series, however, but if Popotan was an OVA the animation would have gotten a 7 from me. I love the character designs and the coloring and all, but the fluidity just seemed a bit rushed.
The music I absolutely loved. The opening theme performed by Under17 isn't all that great, but I love the ending theme sung by Funta. It's very cute and cheerful and matches the anime well. Also, the song Gem Stone which is performed by Funta and Haruko Momoi together is excellent. The voice actors all match the characters perfectly, rather you listen to it in English or Japanese. The sound is something that should not be missed.
Overall you will have to get past the crummy first few episodes to get to the drama, and then this turns out to be a great anime. This will have you laughing, crying, and perhaps covering your eyes at the nudity (breast exposure in the first five minutes!) but overall, A+. Highly recommended if you have patience and like drama with tons of memorable characters.
