How Rap Music Has Saved Me

Rap music has always been in my life, so to no surprise it has had an impact on my life. It has helped me to stay positive, and even overcome some obstacles in my life. To me some rap music is able to be therapeutic and even helps to reduce my stress.

One of My Biggest Obstacles In Life

2015 has been the hardest year of my life. It was a year consisting of a lot of pain for me. That year my mom was sentenced to 7 years in prison. Having one of your biggest supporters stripped away from you for what seems like forever…

It hurt knowing there was nothing I could do in the situation. This was right before I got to high school so what hurt even more is that I knew she was going to miss out on most of my teenage years.

No Depression

I was slowly getting depressed… but rap music saved me. More specifically a song called “No Depression” by my favorite artist G Herbo. A lyric that stuck with me is “My OG (his mom) told me if you want some better get at it and if you fail better keep at it”. It made me realize that my mom would never want me to lose hope, so I told myself I would make her proud so when she gets out she can see the young man I have become.

Therapeutic Aspect of Rap
When I was in first grade I lost my grandma. I know this was years ago, but seeing people still able to talk to their grandma makes me miss mine. A song that I listen to when I’m missing her is called “Through Da Storm” by Polo G. My favorite lyric from this song is “Know my grandma still with me when it gets cold I feel your spirit”. It just puts me in a better mood because while there are people still with their grandma, there are other people like me who have lost them.
