How to make a Spell Book Costume
- Start by cutting a medium or large box to fit length-wise the size of the child. In this case we use the wide side of the front and back of the box for the costume.
- Paint the cardboard with a couple coats of brown spray paint. We used Aged Copper and it’s a little darker in person than it appears in photos.
- Once the spray paint dries overnight, create a distressed look using black and brown acrylic paint. There’s no wrong way to do this, we simply brushed the paint along the edges and blended it in with a napkin. The goal is to remove most of the paint, so it creates an aged look.
- Cut a strip of the leftover cardboard box that is slightly shorter than the length of the book. Paint it silver then distress with the same method as the book.
- Spray paint the snakes with the same nickel spray paint as the cardboard strip. Allow the snakes and cardboard to dry overnight before gluing the pieces together.
- Hot glue the silver cardboard piece on the left side of the book and add a snake (or two) on top. Glue the smaller snakes in the corners.
- Use a paint pen or marker to draw stitches throughout the front of the book.
- For the clasp around the eye, roll oven-bake clay until it is slightly wider than the eye. Poke holes on top using a toothpick and bake according to package directions.
- Glue the eye and clay clasp on the right side of the book costume.
- Hot glue elastic straps on the inside of the book to drape over the shoulders.
My daughter loves the way it turned out! It’s no too scary and perfect for younger kids. You can create a spookier costume by making your own oval shaped eye and darkening up the distressing.
