the california teachers association strongly support keeping kids in the classroom. during this omicron search, the alameda county education office told hayward unified, they'd be willing to get the district some extra help to keep their schools open. help in the form of accredited staff from the county education office to work as substitutes, extra rapid tests and staff to help with contact tracing even so, in an emergency meeting friday night, hayward unified school board voted for 21. to switch the entire district to online only learning until january, 18th. but we told them was we want to support whatever you can to remain in in person instruction, and that was the same thing that the state told them. their board made a different decision, and it's a decision that's not without risks. they're at risk of losing funding if they're not providing the appropriate educational level or the appropriate educational support to their students. how much funding are we talking about? according to the county office of education, approximately $2.5 million a day

for the hayward school district for every day they remain in distance learning, and we also spoke with hayward unified district spokesperson about all this. here's what she said about the board's decision. quote it was a difficult choice. the board is aware of the potential risks of losing funding. but we're balancing that with the risk of not being able to safely opened their schools. now. hayward usd says on friday, 365 staff members called out 117 of them tested positive for covid. another 33 were out because of possible exposure to covid. hayward unified says they believe the switch to distance learning is allowed under the framework of state laws because for kids who can't log on at home, they can do their online classes at one of the six learning hubs. the school district has set up its school sites, and my colleague rob roth will have much more on this story, including the response from the hayward teachers union that's coming up in our later newscasts live in the newsroom. ali rasmus ktvu fox two news, ali thank you teachers and staff at the west contra costa unified

school district are now required to wear medical grade masks while on campus due to the recent surge in covid. kn 95 face masks have been ordered for all 3000 school district employees. district schools were closed on friday because of an increase in covid cases, and students and staff and virtual learning is taking place again today. classrooms are scheduled to reopen tomorrow. california has a huge budget surplus. despite the pandemic, and this morning, governor newsom outlined how we'd like to spend that money the governor unveiled is $286 billion budget proposal this morning at the state capital. california's projected to have a budget surplus for the second year in a row. this one is estimated to be more than $45 billion governor nuisance proposing 2.7 billion of that to go toward new efforts to respond to the surgeon covid. $22.5 billion meant to combat climate crisis and wildfire prevention. there will also be more spending per for infrastructure as well as schools, law enforcement as well as drought preparedness. we

after tragedy struck teams have cleaning crews arrived at the site of new york's worst residential fire in three decades. because this is like a family. you know, we lost a lot of lives, which hurts very bad, especially children, and even elders. mayor eric adams said. at least 17 people lost their lives, including eight children . dozens of families lost their homes, but they are the lucky ones. france shannon's parents are in their seventies and made it out alive. i couldn't believe it in my own eyes. i was i was in shock. i can't even express any words that smoke those. oh so much smoke poured out of the 19 story building. the fire commissioner called it unprecedented. residents had to break windows to try and escape . investigators blame a faulty space heater, but said the buildings furnace was working. 200 firefighters arrived at the chaotic scene, some within three minutes, making their way through thick smoke to save lives. the smoke went out

convicted murderer has died. there's died in a state prison hospital facility this morning and stocked and he was 78 years old. his attorney says that durst died from natural causes due to a number of health related issues. durst was convicted in september of shooting and killing his friend susan berman. in 2000. he was sentenced to life in prison. durst had long been suspected of killing his wife in 1982 and was indicted in november for second degree murder in her death. hollywood is remembering one of america's favorite tv dads, actor and comedian bob saget. he was found dead sunday in a hotel room in orlando boxes phil keating as the story from miami. he did. everything would love and with humor the comedy world morning a legend today, actor

and comedian bob saget dead at the age of 65. saget was in orlando, florida as part of his stand up tour when he was discovered unresponsive by police in his hotel room at the ritz carlton on sunday. just the night before saget was doing what he did best delivering laughs at his show, posting to instagram saturday night, saying, quote i'm backing comedy like i was when i was 26. it hurt my heart really bad. it was horrible sag. it is best known for his role as single dad, danny tanner on full house. and host of america's funniest home videos, tributes rolling in from his co stars and fellow comedians. john stamos, who starred with saget on full house writing quote. i am broken. i am gutted. i am in complete and utter shock. i will never have another friend like him. i love you so much, bobby. meanwhile fans in comedy clubs across the

concern for many americans, according to the poll from the associated press. just 37% of americans said covid is a top priority for the government to work on in 2022. instead 68% of americans surveyed said the economy should be the government's top concern. 14% mentioned inflation the u. s. labor department says employers added close to 200,000 jobs last month, less than half of what was expected and well below last year's monthly average. this is happening despite unemployment numbers falling in december to just under 4% ktvu is tom vacar has the story. the latest employment data is both surprising and conflicted. labor

lawyer mike bernick of the international duane morris law firm is a former ed director. the fact that chronic hasn't um, had yet a significant impact in terms of layoffs. um i think it's the main story of the past week. in fact, last year's 207,000 layoffs nationwide almost matches. a near half century record low for layoffs, employers are keeping on workers holding tight to the workers they have given the difficulty of finding workers nonetheless, 4.5 million americans quit their jobs in november. that's the highest month we quit level since those surveys started back in 2000, even with a shortage of workers to replace them. this is not necessarily a bad sign. in some ways that reflects the confidence in many ways the confidence workers have in terms of quitting jobs, believing they can get other and better jobs. paycheck processing giant adp

the alleged victims of the so called shopping cart killer, investigators say stephanie harrison of reading vanished last august while she was on a sightseeing trip to washington, d. c. her body was discovered inside a shopping card a few weeks later near washington's union train station. you believe this? maybe anthony robinson's fifth victim. this is based on digital evidence that puts him in the same vicinity around the time of the victim's disappearance. sad and tragic. 35 year old anthony robinson is now behind bars after being linked to the killings of four other women. investigators say he met his alleged victims on dating apps killed them, then used shopping carts to dump their bodies in vacant lots. the us coast guard has issued new safety regulations as a result of the 2019 boat fire off the southern california coast that killed 34 people, including many scuba divers from right here in the bay area. the first rules to

really take deep and make the best of a situation and show up because that's what first responders do right. they show up. they show up on your right day. and there's a lot of that. gina your character, captain tommy vega has had her life pulled apart and this is now piling on. i see. the writers have kind of made it difficult for all of you. you know, and with the 1 26. i won't say too much because i think i don't want to give it away. but you know, now you're kind of being pulled back into the role of getting all back together. i think a lot of viewers want to see that. oh, god. i hope they want to see that we are we make an incredible team. that's my work family and we miss each other. terribly and know that so much of what makes us a successful team is that we trust each other implicitly. we quite literally trust each other with our lives. and you see a lot of that. we see quite a bit of that

you've noticed we do have a ridge of high pressure in place and that keeps pushing the storm track to the north. that is not really expected to change. we will get another opportunity at clouds. maybe a little bit of drizzle, but it really looks like we're going to remain right. so mostly sunny skies a little bit of haze out there today, and temperatures for most are warmer with some of our inland cities and some of our warmer cities in the santa clara valley in the sixties, and then, as we get into the extended forecast, we will see an increase in clouds once again later in the week, but not likely to see much rain temperature is right now in and around the bay area. we have a fifties. if we shift to the north bay, we've got 59 arana park. 61 over bodega bay as well as sebastian pool and 64 point reyes to the afternoon, upper fifties low sixties for most of us we have 58 expected in pacifica as well as san francisco and in the south based 63 over san jose in the north based 62 expected in napa so

other. the pilot crashed the single engine cessna right near an airport in san fernando valley. that plane ended up on some train tracks. while moments later, officers pulled up to the scene, ran to the plane and then pulled the pilot from the wreckage just as a train was steaming down the tracks right toward the group. police body cam video shows the moment here that the train rolled through and slammed into the plane. vote no, go go! officers were quick
