Though all eyes are currently on the PS3's much-anticipated price drop that hit today, apparently the PS2 has been given a little attention of its own. Word has it that the internally-modified SCPH-79000 line of PS2s which are currently being distributed in Japan are even lighter than the ones currently available—a surprising occurance given the already lightweight nature of the aptly titled "PS2 Slim."
The new model has shed 300 grams, bringing the weight down to 600g (from the original 900g). Likewise, the unit's AC adapter has also lost some weight, losing 100g to meet the new 250g mark. The reduction of parts that made these modifications possible occurred internally, thus leaving the unit looking the same though weighing less.
Some have speculated that the unit's shed pounds, and thus lower manufacturing costs, may be setting the PS2 up for one last price cut to the $99 price point before the system finally heads for the big arcade in the sky. Given the fact that the PS2 continues to sell at its current $129.99 price, though, I don't really see that happening. As it stands, the PS2 still offers the best bang for your buck in the gaming world, and the unit's legacy will be a tough one for any competitor to best in the future.
