Howard County in Maryland appointed Gregory J. Der as the new police chief, FOX Baltimore reports. He will be the county’s first Asian American chief of police.
Howard County Executive Calvin Ball announced the appointment on Monday. Der’s appointment is effective January 1, 2022, according to a press release.
Der currently serves as the Chief Deputy in the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s office.
“I’ve known Gregory for nearly 15 years, and he has stood out as a thoughtful, determined, collaborative leader, who will guide our Police Department into the future,” Ball said, according to FOX Baltimore.
Der told the media he is “humbled and honored” to accept the appointment.
“Having graduated from Mt. Hebron High School and worked in the Howard County Police Department for 19 years, I am personally invested in the success of our agency and I know what our citizens rightfully expect of us,” Der said, according to FOX Baltimore.
