Arizona held an election for superintendent of public instruction on November 8, 2022. The primary was scheduled for August 2, 2022. The filing deadline was April 4, 2022.
Incumbent Kathy Hoffman ran unopposed in the Democratic primary, and Tom Horne defeated four other candidates to advance from the Republican primary.
Hoffman, a former pre-school teacher and speech-language pathologist, was first elected in 2018, defeating Frank Riggs (R) 51.6% to 48.4% in the general election.[1] Hoffmann was the first Democrat to become superintendent of public instruction in the state since 1995.[2] She said she would focus on policies to reverse pandemic-related learning loss in students.[3]
Horne served as the Arizona Superintendent of Public Instruction from 2003 to 2011. From 2011 to 2015, he served as the state attorney general. Horne said he would focus on fighting critical race theory, stopping cancel culture, and promoting patriotism and quality education.[4]
The superintendent of public instruction oversees the state of Arizona's public school system and directs the state's Department of Education.
Thomas C. Horne won election in the general election for Arizona Superintendent of Public Instruction.
