Daniel B. Smith is the former acting secretary of state in the Biden administration. He assumed office on January 20, 2021. Smith left office on January 26, 2021, when Antony Blinken was confirmed and sworn in as secretary of state.[1][2]

Biography

Smith earned a B.A. from the University of Colorado at Boulder. He also earned an M.A. and Ph.D. from Stanford University.[3]

From 2010 to 2013, Smith was the ambassador to the Hellenic Republic. He previously served tours in Bern, Istanbul, Ottawa, and Stockholm. He was the assistant secretary of state for intelligence and research from 2013 to 2018. In 2018, he was appointed the director of the Foreign Service Institute.[3]

As of January 2021, Smith was also a member of the Senior Foreign Service with a rank of career ambassador.[3]

He speaks German, Turkish, and Swedish.[3]
