Hugh A. Gilbert was a justice for the Jefferson County Supreme Court in the 5th Judicial District of New York. He was elected to this position in 1990 and re-elected in 2004. Because Gilbert reached the mandatory retirement age of 70, he would have been forced to retire in 2011. However, Gilbert received certification to remain on the court for two extra years. His latest term ended in December 2013.[1][2][3][4]

Education

Gilbert received his undergraduate degree from Fordham University in 1962 and his J.D. degree from the Albany School of Law in 1965.[1]

Career

Gilbert began his career in 1965 as a private practice lawyer. He worked in this capacity until his judicial election in 1978. Gilbert also served as a town counsel for various New York townships from 1966 to 1978 and as counsel for the Watertown Savings Bank from 1969 to 1978.

Gilbert began his judicial career in 1978 when he was elected to the Jefferson County Family Court. He was then elected to the Jefferson County Surrogate's Court in 1984. Gilbert served there until he joined the Jefferson County Supreme Court in 1990. During that time, he also served as an acting supreme court justice from 1985 to 1990. From 1997 to 2009, he served as a supervising judge of the 5th Judicial District Family Courts.[1]
