The Massachusetts State Auditor is a state executive position in the Massachusetts state government. The auditor's office is responsible for conducting financial, performance and technical audits of state programs, departments, agencies and other uses of public money.[1]

The current Massachusetts Auditor of the Commonwealth is Diana DiZoglio (D). DiZoglio assumed office in 2023.
Authority
The office of the state auditor is established by Part I, Title II, Chapter 11, Section 1 of the General Laws of Massachusetts:[2]
There shall be a department to be known as the department of the state auditor under his supervision and control, organized as provided in this chapter. |
Qualifications
According to Article XVII of the Massachusetts Constitution, an executive officer of the commonwealth must "have been an inhabitant of this commonwealth five years next preceding his election or appointment."[3]
Elections
Massachusetts elects auditors in the midterm elections, that is, even years that are not presidential election years. For Massachusetts, 2018, 2022, 2026, and 2030 are all auditor election years.

Vacancy
If the office of the auditor becomes vacant during annual or special session of the general court, the public elects a successor, otherwise, "it shall be supplied by the governor by appointment, with the advice and consent of the council."[3]
Duties
The office of the auditor conducts financial, performance, and technical assessments of programs, departments, agencies, authorities, contracts, and vendors. While these audits and reports may uncover problems and issues, they also contain recommendations to improve accountability, efficiency, and transparency.[4]
