Sharna Wahlgren was a 2016 Republican candidate for District 53 of the Minnesota State Senate.

Wahlgren was a 2014 Republican candidate seeking election to the U.S. House to represent the 4th Congressional District of Minnesota.[1] Wahlgren ran uncontested for the Republican nomination in the primary on August 12, 2014.[2] She was defeated by incumbent Betty McCollum (D) in the general election on November 4, 2014.[3]

Campaign themes

2016

Wahlgren's campaign website highlighted the following issues:

Middle Class Economy and Jobs:

  • Improving the economy means improving the financial security for all families. We need good, well-paying jobs for everyone. Higher education (college and vo-tech) must be affordable and geared toward actual job opportunities. The cost of health care really needs to be affordable. The middle class has suffered too much. We must do more to ensure that everyone has a path to a thriving middle-class.

Education:

  • All children deserve an excellent education. It’s that simple. It’s that important. We need local solutions to education issues, tailored to our specific children, schools and communities. We must empower teachers. College costs have escalated beyond what’s reasonable or necessary. Colleges and other vocational schools need to be affordable. It's not just a matter of cost-shifting, of figuring out who will pay for higher ed costs. If the cost is out of line, it has to actually come down. We need to think outside the current model and allow for innovation that will make education more effective and less expensive.

Common Sense, Effective Government:

  • Common sense, effective government might be hard to define – but you know it when you see it. We need to stop spending money on “bridges to nowhere.” We need strong leaders with new ideas and effective common sense solutions that are good for everyone, not just special interests.[4]
