Campaign themes

2012

Malek's website highlighted the following campaign themes:[12]

Economy

  • Excerpt: "Worker retraining will continue to be important to our changing economy. As a state and nation, we must adequately and fairly fund our public schools and make sure students can obtain the grants and loans they need to attend college."

Education

  • Excerpt: "The federal law No Child Left Behind is a poor fit for small and rural states like Montana. All too often it prevents local control and punishes schools when they need help the most. We must maintain high expectations for our students and we are doing that the Montana way."

Women

  • Excerpt: "I support family leave policies that allow sick, vacation, or unpaid leave for people who need time off to care for family members."
  • Excerpt: "I support affordable, quality child care and pre-school programs that mean so much to the long-term educational success of our children"

Environment

  • Excerpt: "I support development of alternative energy, wind and solar, because these industries mean good jobs for Montanans, can help individual families save money, and will help us protect our environment. We have innovative products being developed in Montana. I will support the companies working on new opportunities every step of the way."

Scorecards

A scorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.

Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.
