Luis Enrique could be key in Chelsea’s pursuit of Barcelona midfielder
After sacking Graham Potter earlier in the month, Chelsea surprised everyone by appointing Frank Lampard on an interim basis until the end of the season.
But as the Blues look for options that can replace Lampard in the summer, Luis Enrique is among the managers leading the race. The former Barcelona boss has been out of a job since quitting Spain following their debacle at the 2022 World Cup and may well join the Blues in the coming summer.
To that end, a recent report from Goal has explored Chelsea’s pursuit of Gavi, suggesting that the likelihood of the Premier League giants signing the Barcelona starlet could hinge on Luis Enrique.
This comes shortly after reports that claimed Gavi’s agent met with Chelsea officials, to discuss the player’s future. The Blues are understood to be willing to offer the teenager a lucrative contract and a hefty signing bonus to lure him to Stamford Bridge.
Subsequent reports across Spain suggest that is not the case and that Gavi is very happy at Barcelona, there is still a layer of uncertainty hanging around the young Spain midfielder amid his contract woes.
Gavi’s contract registration was revoked by a court last month, overturning its initial decision that granted Barcelona the right to register him as a first-team member. With the contract void, the player has returned to his previous contract which expires in the summer.
Barcelona are reportedly looking for options to sort out Gavi’s contract. It has even grown into a priority as the club look to avoid having to sanction the sale of one of the most gifted assets. We may receive more definitive updates regarding Gavi’s future only in the coming weeks.
