WHAT DO YOU NEED TO MAKE Grilled Jalapeno poppers?
It doesn’t take much to create the best-grilled jalapeno poppers. Whether you are grilling them over charcoal or on a gas grill, you can whip them up in no time!
INGREDIENTS
- Cream cheese
- Medium-size fresh jalapenos peppers
- Sliced bacon
- Toothpick to secure the wrapped bacon
The great thing about this recipe is that you can find all the ingredients at your local grocer. There are no obscure or hard-to-find ingredients in the recipe.
HOW TO MAKE Bacon wrapped grilled jalapeno poppers
Start by rinsing your fresh jalapenos under cold water. Using a sharp knife, slice the jalapenos in half vertically from the top of the stem to the bottom of the pepper.
Next, using a spoon or a small paring knife, cut or scrape out the seeds and membrane. Remove as much or as little as you like. Remember, the heat of the jalapeno is mostly contained in the seeds and membranes. If you prefer your poppers to be on the milder side, remove all the seeds and membrane. If, however, you prefer your poppers to have more spice, you can leave most of the seeds and membrane in before stuffing. You might want to wear gloves when handling hot peppers, and be sure to not rub your eyes!!!
Now it is time to fill the jalapeno halves with cream cheese. Using a small spoon, fill each pepper half with cream cheese. Be careful to fill them only so they are level. If you overfill them with the cheese filling, it will leak out when you are grilling them.
Now it is time to wrap these poppers with bacon once the jalapenos are stuffed! Take a one-half slice of bacon and start from the top of the jalapeno and wrap it around the length of the pepper, securing it with a toothpick. Repeat this process with all the peppers.
Now you are ready to put them on the grill. Note: you can prepare the poppers to this point in advance. You can store them covered in the refrigerator for up to 8 hours before grilling.
What temperature do you grill poppers?
You will want to grill your poppers at a fairly low temperature, somewhere around 350 degrees F. If you try to grill your bacon-wrapped poppers at a higher temperature, the bacon will burn, you will have major flare-ups on the grill from the bacon fat, and the cheese won’t have a chance to heat and soften.
Preheat your grill to medium, about 350 degrees F, as noted above. If you prepared your poppers in advance and refrigerated them, remove them from the fridge and allow them to come to room temp for about 1/2 hour.
Once the grill is preheated, place the poppers on the grill. Cook the poppers for about 15 minutes, moving them around the grill to avoid flare-ups.
Do you flip jalapeno poppers on the grill?
Yes, absolutely, you have to flip your jalapeno poppers on the grill while they are cooking. Using your BBQ tongs, turn the poppers over so that all sides of the bacon are browned and crispy. Make sure that you don’t allow the bacon to burn. After all, no one likes burnt bacon!
Remove your poppers from the grill when the bacon is cooked. You should also have just a little bit of char on the jalapeno. This adds a beautiful flavor to the popper, and that softened creamy cheese helps to cool the heat of the jalapeno.
Does grilling jalapeños make them milder?
The short answer to this question is no, grilling your jalapeno does not necessarily make it milder. The heat from the grilling may change the flavor of the pepper a little, but the heat of the pepper really doesn’t change. The cream cheese helps to cool the spiciness of the jalapeno.
Remember, you can also help control how spicy your stuffed jalapeno popper is by how much of the seed and membrane you remove. That is one of the reasons I love cooking and grilling! The end result is in your hands based on how you prepare things!
Just look at that tasty little jalapeno popper bite. Don’t you just want to reach out and grab one; you know you do!
