Slate Allen, a college friend of Vale’s brother, has been visiting his dying uncle at the same hospital. When he and Vale meet, she can’t deny the flutter of an illicit attraction. She tries to ignore her feelings, but she's not immune to Slate's charm. Slowly, they form a cautious friendship.

Then, Crawford wakes up . . . with no memory of Vale or their relationship. Heartbroken, Vale opts to leave for college and move on with her life. Except now, she’s in Slate’s territory, and their story is about to take a very strange turn.

From Lala’s Book ReviewsHonestly, this might be my favorite book by Abbi. This book tore me a part in every way possible. It’s told in two parts, and I was crying the entire time while I was reading the second part after I pieced together what happened. I’ll talk about the second part later in this review after the playlist, so I hopefully won’t spoil anyone who doesn’t want to be spoiled.Vale is the typical good girl in high school with a good balance of her academic and social life. She has the perfect boyfriend, a loving family, and a bright future; until her world is suddenly turned upside down when she and her boyfriend, Crawford, is hit by a truck on the night of their graduation. Each day that his is in a coma is a day that Vale loses sense of the world until she spends all of her time in the waiting room in the hospital awaiting her time to sit in Crawford’s room to read to him hoping that he’ll wake up. Her life revolves around her time at the hospital, and it’s getting close to the time for her to leave for college. Her family is worried that she might take of the fall semester to stay by Crawford.During her time in the waiting room, she meets Slate as he is going to visit his uncle who’s battling cancer. Slate is a straight-forward guy who doesn’t sugar coat anything (and he sleeps around, but at least he’s honest about it).Slate slowly brings life back to Vale and despite his constant banter and pestering, and Vale finds herself wanting to spend time with him.Skip ahead to move in day at college, and Vale finds herself in a place where she can start over, yet she doesn’t wait to move on and live because there’s still the chance that Crawford could wake up. Vale slowly starts to make some new friends (and a few enemies because she’s Slate’s only female friend). She is getting used to college life, and she has a job on the weekends to make some money, and as time goes on, she decides that it’s time for to move forward and acts on her feelings towards Slate. As She Fades is a heart-stoppingly beautiful book that will put in perspective of how fragile life is and why we shouldn’t take loved ones for granite. This book will make you cry, laugh, and call you loved ones to tell them you love them. There’s also a playlist of songs on my blog!

Glad I was reading this at home when the tears started. These single stories from Abbi Glines are so packed with emotion, they are a great ride.

Abbi Glines is one of those authors that bring nostalgia to me. When I fell off my reading back when I was 19, I read Fallen Too Far and I was sucked back into reading. Anytime I see that she is coming out with a new release I pre order it. I can’t help it.

I really didn’t want to put this book down once I started reading and when I did, my mind kept going back to it.

If you have read reviews for this title, then you know that you there is a twist in this book. If I thought I was invested before the twist came, you can bet your ass that I didn’t put this book down after it happened! You really can’t go into details of this story without giving anything away. Towards the end, I came to understand the need for that twist. It was really needed in the story and I hope everyone can appreciate it and understand it as well.

I will say that Vale had my heart. She was a sweetheart who is trying to get her life back on track after a tragic accident. This girl was brave and didn’t make her decisions lightly. I was so proud of her by time this book was over.

Overall, I enjoyed this so much and recommend if you like YA contemporary.

Holy wow double rainbows 🌈 🌈 unicorns 🦄 in the ☁️ sky! This booook I was so intensely caught up in the story I didn’t realize it was the end! Y’all! That is when you know the book is amaze balls!!!!! Swooooon I am still reeling! It was perfect, pure and heart wrenching! I love how developed and mature the characters were! I love that they don’t play games. They are honest and it is soooo refreshing!
I did not see that twist coming and I am glad she saw Crawford's true colors. ONE DAY IS BAD ENOUGH but he waited a whole 3 days to see her. That is why I like when a person is comfortable in their own skin and loves themselves and thennnnn they find a person who compliments them. I wouldn't say complete because that doesn't do it justice either. Someone who pushes you and brings out the best. That is who she found in Slate.

    some of my FAV quotes
“Life tosses you things you’re not expecting. This won’t be the first big hurdle in your life. What you have to learn is that you’re strong enough to live anyway.

“If I ever let a woman buy my coffee, my mother would fly here on her broom and beat me over the head with it.” The image made me laugh. “We won’t tell her.” Seriously made me LOL

What if he was that guy and didn’t know it? What if we had both been lost until now?

The first guy other than Crawford who I’d developed feelings for saw me as a sister. Until tonight and this moment, I hadn’t been able to admit I had feelings for Slate. I hadn’t been ready for all this to hit me at once.

Life had dealt me some difficult cards, but I was going to find my own path now. I didn’t need a guy to complete me. I never did. I just never had the opportunity to find that out. Until now.

That boy’s got the biggest one I’ve ever seen. When he loves, he loves big. He doesn’t let you down and he stands by you no matter what. I know it because he loves me. Don’t let his past mistakes and possibly his future mistakes let you miss out on being loved by a heart that damn big.”

Sometimes life throws changes our way that make us stronger and show us we don’t always know what is best.

I knew just listening to him that Vale McKinley was special. The kind of special that changed a person. That made a mark in life.

I knew he had a reputation, but he was also a human. Someone’s nephew. He had a soul.

“I will leave that Jeep right there and walk the entire way back with you if you don’t. I’m not letting you out of my sight.”

“Actually, there’s a side of Slate no one sees because he doesn’t show them. Or they don’t look closely. You went out with him because of his reputation. Maybe you should have tried to see beyond what you thought you knew about him.”
“Crawford will regret this one day,” Slate said as he turned his body toward me. “He had you. He’d lived a perfect life with you and he didn’t even know what he had because he hadn’t tried anything else. Me . . . well, I’ve tried it all. I’m not wondering what’s on the other side. I’ve been there, and it is lonely. He’ll realize it one day, and it’ll be too late.”

my pulse raced with Slate. He made the world brighter and full of the unknown.

I downloaded the "free" sample, I love Abbi and her books but I wasn't sure if I wanted to read this one. It seemed a typical romance girl & boy in love, accident, girl loses boy .. etc. It wasn't and I want to say I saw the twist coming but I didn't!! I really liked this book so much I stayed up all night to read it!! I may go back and re-read it to see if there were any signs to the said twist but I don't think so. For me it was enjoyable, I've read many of Abbi's books and really like her style. I feel it was a good read with a happy ending.

I am a huge fan of Abbi Glines and have read all of her books. So much of a fan that I named my daughter Harlow after one of her characters in another book I was reading when I found out I was pregnant. I pre-ordered this book and couldn’t wait to carve out a few hours to get lost in this book. It was so worth it!

Vale was such an easy person to like and want to be friends with. I’m so glad she grew into the person she wanted to be, not what someone else wanted her to be. Part two did sort of throw me for a loop, although I sensed some foreshadowing. It was a good loop to be thrown because I felt like Vale was so kick ass in the second part.
Slate 😍 the player with a heart of gold. His growth and development into such a sweetheart was so swoon worthy. I have yet to read a Glines book that didn’t have a swoon worthy guy though.

If you’ve never read an Abbi Glines book you should definitely try this one as it is different than others. BUT keep reading her other books that are series because they are all AMAZING! I just wish I lived closer to where she has signings so I could get this book signed!

Whichever book you read by this author, you can’t go wrong. My emotions run the gamut while reading. I laugh a little, I get a little pissed fir the characters, I get happy and sad for the characters. This was a very good read. I loved Vale and Skate’s story. Their friends and nemeses became my friend and nemeses. I felt as though their families were extended to me. Loved, loved, loved it!!!

I love Abbi Glines and all her books. This is one of the last I have read out of them all. She is good with curveballs but nothing prepared me for the spanner she threw into the works! I was so confused then it clicked and it was so well written. Really brought out emotions and I think that Abbi has highlighted a very key issue within the book about coercive control, which is a hidden form of abuse that most people do not recognise until they are out of the relationship or have a time apart from the person. I know it may not seem severe to many but it did touch on the importance of ensuring that we do not do what our partners always want or expect. I have been a victim of domestic abuse and in particular coercive control. You do lose yourself and change to fit that person. They do it so subtly without realising, often not saying you cannot do something or you have to do something but rather they would behave annoyed or angry with you when they do not get there way. My ex would sulk and ignore me for days at a time, even though we lived together. It got to a point it was easier to do things he liked, the way a dress/not wearing make up/ only having his friends (but I couldn’t see them without him. I was at university at the time and went away as part of a work placement for a week. It was then I noticed all I had changed. I know it isn’t a coma but it was so relatable and Abbi put forward an excellent insight into that. Thank you Abbi Glines!

I enjoyed this book. You could see from early on where things were going to go with Vale and slate. The twist in the middle threw me for a while. I thought at first that Vale was remembering back to when she woke from the accident, and then the penny dropped. I liked the idea that the coma had shown her a different path than the one she was on. I'm a great believer in everything happening for a reason and I feel Vale and the coma happened for a reason, to put her on the path that would bring her happiness. Great story, loved the twist once I got my head around it.
