“Intense….A higher caliber of entertainment.”
—New York Times
Elmore Leonard’s Glitz is a killer…in the best possible way. “The King Daddy of crime writers” (Seattle Times) electrifies with this unputdownable noir tale of a mama’s boy psycho killer with a vendetta against a Miami cop. A cat-and-mouse tale with claws, Glitz is thrilling, frightening, explosive, surprising, everything a great thriller is supposed to be—superior crime fiction the genre’s late greats, John D. MacDonald, Dashiell Hammett, James M. Cain, et al, would have been proud to call their own. Elmore Leonard, the creator of magnificent mayhem and truly unforgettable characters—like U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens of the hit TV series Justified—is at his nail-biting, page-turning best with Glitz which Stephen King in the New York Times Book Review calls, “Smashing and satisfying.”

From the Back Cover
Psycho mama’s boy Teddy Magyk has a serious jones for the Miami cop who put him away for raping a senior citizen—but he wants to hit Vincent Mora where it really hurts before killing him. So when a beautiful Puerto Rican hooker takes a swan dive from an Atlantic City high-rise, and Vincent naturally shows up to investigate the questionable death of his “special friend,” Teddy figures he’s got his prey just where he wants him. But the A.C. dazzle is blinding the Magic Man to a couple of very hard truths: Vincent Mora doesn’t forgive and forget . . . and he doesn’t die easy.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 13, 2016My favorite novel by my favorite crime/western novelist. Leonard creates wonderful characters and wonderful dialogue.
His words create pictures in my mind. When describing Atlantic City he writes: "Here were weathered frame beach homes out of the past next to white modern ones with round corners, as different as privies and spaceships."
And then Linda shoots Teddy to save Vincent and the bullet goes through Teddy into Vincent.

I came late to the late Mr. Leonard ... shocking many friends. This was one of their 'must reads!' I'm glad I did.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 4, 2021In Glitz, a nod to the casinos of San Juan and Atlantic City, Leonard offers us a cops and robbers story peopled by great characters. Our protagonist is Vincent, a Miami police detective who takes a gunshot while carrying a sack of groceries home. He makes the most of his disability leave with a stay on beaches of San Juan arm in arm with Iris, a young woman ready to take any path out of poverty. Then, there’s Teddy Magyck, who Vincent Mora put away for elder rape seven and a half years ago and has now left Raiford with revenge fantasies dancing in his head. At first, Vincent doesn’t even know he’s being hunted, but pretty soon catches on the cat and mouse game being played with his life.
Leonard, of course, brings this contest to life with his patented ear for dialogue and the result is a story that moves at a breakneck pace with no quarter being given. The story takes us from San Juan to the Monopoly-board streets of Atlantic City, complete with wiseguys running the show. Vincent is officially on leave and has no jurisdiction anywhere the story takes place, but that doesn’t stop him from butting heads with anyone in his way.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 22, 2022Tough to determine which of his novels is truly the best (maybe impossible). Gliz has to be right there in the top 9- why must we always do a top 10. Every piece of dialog goes differently than expected. What DID the drunk say to the cop outside the hotel with only his underwear and gun?
- Reviewed in the United States on July 26, 2016Generally speaking, I like Elmore Leonard's writing style and find most of his characters interesting, if not entertaining. In Glitz (1985) Leonard has created a smart, honest and human cop in Vincent Mora. He is no superman, but he is a risk taker and is usually a step ahead of the criminal element. But here, we have an elderly woman raping, psychopathic murderer, who is dead set on revenge with Mora for putting him in jail. Most of the action takes place in the tourist gambling dens of San Juan, Puerto Rico and Atlantic City, New Jersey. San Juan is on my list of places to visit-I suspect Leonard did some research in both places. There is some male fantasy channeling throughout the novel-as all the female characters are attractive and some of the dialogue is painfully contrived, but overall it is an entertaining crime story from Leonard.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 17, 2013As a fan of Leonard's writing this title has his virtues and his weaknesses. There are interesting characters on both sides of the law and there is the usual entertaining dialogue. The plot centres around a weak, rather sick criminal now out of prison who is bent on revenge on the cop who put him there in the first place. The protagonist is Vincent Mora a likeable cop with loads of Leonard style cool who is on his trail for a suspected murder. The settings vary from Puerto Rico to gambling places in the US. The weaknesses centre on a meandering plot with a certain lack of tension and an all too familiar plot device to end the story...simply have someone shoot the villain.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 27, 2012I love this book. It's a fresh take on crime novels that you do not see very often. The title is pretty misleading and as a man, I got some flack for it haha. I would purchase this again, and actually did when I misplaced the first book. Must buy book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not the usual Elmore but readable
The writing is there, the coolness, the wit and everything else but also not there. Not the usual Leonard but as a fan and knowing what to expect, I chugged along and the patience pays off towards the end. In the middle it feels muddled and I felt Teddy’s character was given more time than it deserves. And when it comes to the part in Atlantic city, the narration drags as if Mr Leonard is not willing part with the research he has done about the casinos, the mafia and the players.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great crime writing from a master.
Glitz tells the story of detective Vincent Mora who having been shot coming home from grocery shopping, finds himself convalescing in Puerto Rico. There he meets a woman who leads him to cross paths again with a Teddy Magyk. A very nasty piece of work.
It is classical Leonard. Tight story, stripped back dialogue and world-weary heroes. And very bad baddies. Nobody writes like this man. Genius.
Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of his best!
I LOVE Elmore Leonard! His writing style is more narrative, with no unnecessary paragraphs. This story has it all. Love romance, vengeance, and humor.
