Hidden (A Bone Secrets Novel Book 1) Kindle Edition
Hidden is the first book in Bone Secrets, the multimillion-copy bestselling series.
Eleven years ago, the Co-ed Slayer murdered nine female students on the Oregon State University campus. Lacey Campbell barely escaped his attack, but lost her best friend whose remains were never found. As the sole surviving victim, Lacey helped send the sadistic serial killer to prison for life.
Now a forensic odontologist examining teeth and bones for the state Medical Examiner, Lacey is devastated when she arrives at a crime scene and identifies the skeletal remains as her college friend’s.
The remains are discovered on the land of ex-cop Jack Harper. Sparks fly between him and Lacey, even as they realize that the prosecution’s witnesses from a decade ago are now being murdered one by one. All the evidence points to the Co-ed Slayer as the culprit—only, he’s long since dead. So who’s the new killer? And is Lacey next in line to die?
Golden Heart finalist Kendra Elliot combines chilling suspense and steamy romance in a gripping tale, uniting in-depth forensic knowledge with a passion for thrillers. Set in the snowy winter of Oregon, Hidden creates spine-tingling chills.

This was honestly a really great book, especially for being a debut. It had an excellent cast of characters as well, many of whom will have their own stories told in future series installments. As for Jack and Lacey, I really loved them as a couple. Their chemistry was amazing and their connection instantaneous. They were so in sync that at times I forgot that they hardly knew each other. Their sexual tension was also well done and included one spicy but emotional sex scene near the end.
That being said this was just as compelling for the mystery and suspense (if not more so) as the romance. The entire story was totally unpredictable and I never knew what to expect. It kept me on my toes, was fast paced, and filled with twists. Please keep in mind that this is definitely a dark read with tough subject matter including kidnapping, rape and torture. It was without question an engaging and emotional read that tugged at my heart though and was thrilling to the very last page.
My only complaint and the reason I didn't give this book five stars is because of Lacey herself. For such a smart woman she does some amazingly stupid things. She was also a little too judgmental for me although to be fair she does acknowledge this flaw. In the end I still did like her but I just loved Jack more... 😊
- Reviewed in the United States on July 11, 2024I really enjoyed the writing style - just the right amount of explaining the details. The plot was exciting and kept me guessing. Normally, I am not a fan of stories with romance, but I did enjoy the telling of this one. There is one spicy hot scene, which I thought was very well done...but, if that is not what you are comfortable reading, it would be easy to skip past without losing any of the story. The only reason I gave 4 stars, rather than 5, is that I thought the ending was a tad unrealistic. I will definitely read more of this author's books.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 2, 2012I can not express how much I loved this book. I am a huge fan of Karen Rose and when I saw her recommend this author I didn't even think twice just bought it and started reading.
From the opening scene until the last, the words just flowed. The author flawlessly takes us on a journey that spans the course of 11 years.
There are many cast of characters. The sole surviving victim of the Co-ed Slayer who had murdered nine female students 11 years before. Lacey Campbell barely escaped but her best friend was taken and never heard from again even after he was caught and sentenced to death based on her testimony. She is now a forensic odontologist examining teeth and bones for the state Medical Examiner and is shocked when called to a scene to help identify bones that were found under an apartment that they are the bones of her friend that was taken all those years ago.
Jack Harper is a ex-police officer who happens to own the property that the remains are found on. Before Lacey figures out that the bones are of her friend there are some sparks that fly between him and Lacey. Jack who used to date one of the murdered college women and was questioned as a suspect back then and comes under the scrutiny of the press again after the body was found on his property.
Michael an investigative reporter who is also Lacey ex-boyfriend and best friend doesn't like Jack and when he sees there's an attraction between Lacey and Jack he runs Jack through the ringer in the paper. But his first and only goal is keeping Lacey safe and that common tread eventually make Jack and Michael allies.
Mason Callahan and Ray Lusco are with the Oregon State Police Major crimes and play a big part through out the story.
Then we have our sick and twisted killer. Who could this killer be that is going after all the people that put the Co-ed Slayer away. It cant be him as he died in prison.
I live to read books like this. I love the suspense and getting into the mind of the killer and watching the quest to hunt the killer down from every person from the Hero to the police.
The second book in this series is coming out soon and I cannot wait to get my hands on it.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 21, 2012I love books...and I love them even more when they contain both romance, mystery, and a little danger, with a strong female lead to boot. Unfortunately, this story was a little disappointing. I was extremely excited after reading the explanation of the story and expected more from the lead character Lacey. I am a science major myself so I really enjoy it when the lead character in a book uses science in their everyday life, especially forensics to ID people. I thought that Lacey's job and her role as a scientist would play a larger role in the story, maybe to uncover the killer after all that time or to make some other discovery beyond that of the initial ID of her friend's body. I was disappointed in that respect because after the first chapter or two, Lacey's job faded into oblivion and the drama/mystery part of the story took over.
Overall, I enjoyed the story but it wasn't the suspenseful blood-pumping mystery romance I expected it to be. The romance aspect was nice but the mystery never achieved that wow factor that you want in a good mystery/drama story. I enjoy watching Murdoch Mysteries, a Canadian TV series, that is a little like a historical version of NCIS, minus the military aspect and add a constables office and detectives instead. Even though I am pretty good at guessing what happened in the first several minutes of the show, I actually get more of a thrill out of watching something I know is going to happen over than I did while reading this story. It became a little monotonous. I never really bought into the motive for the bad guy in the story, yes revenge but really? Why now? Anyways, if your looking for a quick read to take your mind off of real life for awhile then Hidden is a good story, it was the substance that I was a little disappointed with. It didn't live up to my personal expectations. But I would recommend it as a good story for a light read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book.
This is a great murder mystery. Mason and Ray have an intricate and intriguing investigation,on their hands when skeletal remains are found in a run down building. The body is identified by a necklace and dental hardware, found at the scene, by an orthodontist who was a victim herself, when the identified body was abducted several years ago. When more murders occur, with a similar MO , can the investigators solve the puzzle before the endgame planned? I really enjoyed reading this book and I'm looking forward to reading the next one in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spannend!
Spannend!

5.0 out of 5 stars What an awesome Rollercoaster of love and crime
Wow, wow, wow, I feel hooked. When I was reading German exclusively crime stories were one of my book poison of choice. And man did I fall back in love. Starting with a corpse that leads to a assumed solved murder series and now, a chain of events starts involving new victims and old witnesses. That's the best place and time to fall in love right? Right!!!! Because it was sooooo insanely suspenseful, gripping, good. Already went ahead and got all the other books/audiobooks. The narrator did a great job too. Very vivid told story that never lost me despite my high level on concentration for my not trained English skills. Much love and recommended for reader who love crime romance crossover stories.
