- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 20 April 2023This book has easily become one of my favourite historical romances. Diana Biller has created a luscious world with an eclectic bunch of characters that keep you guessing at every turn.
There was rich historical detail as we were transported to 1800s Austria - it was a deeply enlightening on this era of History. I loved the incorporation of the journals of the 4 Wallner women at the start of each chapter.
As for Eli and Maria… what a duo!
Eli is a stern, sweet, cinnamon roll. I adored seeing him find his people in the least likely of places.
Maria is a determined, strong, adoring woman. I loved reading about her bringing her hotel to life all while falling in love.
The humour in the story was also excellent, particularly from the side characters. Josephine was brilliant and Eli, Mac and Claude were a delightful trio.
I highly recommend this story for any historical romance lovers looking for a deeply romantic tale with a dash of mystery and family antics on the side…

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully charming historical romance with a mystery
I've been lucky enough to visit Vienna twice and even having gone in the 21st century, the majesty and romance still abound. Biller did a great job bringing the fantastical empire to life, near the end. I would love an epilogue or a sequel (Mac and Hannah?) but there's only so much time before WWI breaks out.
Anyway, this was a very engaging romance with two fully realized characters. We get third-person dual POV from Eli and Maria, which is just the way I liked it.
Eli's situation is very different from our usual broody heroes, and Maria is the perfect foil. She works incredibly hard and is very responsible, but she still knows how to enjoy life and how to love.
I enjoyed watching them accept attraction, accept help, and discuss...sexy things. That was HOT. There are a few good scenes that are very well deserved. Nothing gratuitous because we have a mystery to solve and family dynamics to handle!

2.0 out of 5 stars Thorough editing might have saved this one
Clearly, no editor had touched this manuscript. That the romance was a bit lackluster — ok. That there was no spark between the main characters — maybe not ideal. But why had no one looked at the many historical facts the author got wrong? (No, the Habsburgs did not rule since the 13th century, nor are they called HaPsburgs, for Christ’s sake). And what’s with the names?! An Austro-Hungarian aristocrat called Macario von Eder? A newspaper boy called Garit? A banker called Herr Kis? It would have been easy to get these right and shows a lack of care to get so many so wrong. Let alone that no one in strict Viennese 18th century raises a brow that the heroine is an unmarried illegitimate child in the 4th generation running a hotel on her own. Come on, do better.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mindless Fun Read
I was headed to Vienna and wanted a book to give some historical background. This read didn’t fully fulfill that purpose, but it was a great vacation read!

5.0 out of 5 stars delicious, delightful, magical escape into the world of highly competent characters and glittering waltzes in Vienna!
Wow, what a way out of my reading slump! This has all of the catnip I could possibly put together, and I’ll attempt a more fulsome review soon. But this book made believe I can take chances on new books again.
Maria, the lead, is driven, passionate, smart, and vulnerable. Eli, the male MC, is a workaholic punishing himself for his parent’s sins with all work and no play. They come together and their various jagged edges just for together. The relationship is beautiful, but rebuilding a hotel and planning a grand ball is even more fascinating.
