Mr. Worry: A Story about OCD Hardcover – Picture Book, January 1, 2003
Purchase options and add-ons
Kevin can't get to sleep at night until he does many things. He straightens his chair and the books on his desk. He asks his mother questions he already knows the answers to. He checks under his bed for a light he knows isn't there, and then, a minute later, he checks again. Kevin knows these actions don't make sense; he wants to stop, but the worry thoughts keep coming. When his parents realize that Kevin has too many worries, they take him to talk to a therapist. She tells Kevin and his parents that Kevin has a condition called obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and that, more importantly, he can be helped.

Review
"The use of simple language and straightforward information clarifies the situation, and readers are soon cheering for the boy's success. The artistic portrayals of Kevin's thoughts add whimsy and interest to the story. Although the author includes a few setbacks, Kevin makes good progress, providing hope for the future. This title fills a singular need in the area of psychology."―School Library Journal

About the author

I grew up in Newburgh, New York where I could often be found reading a book under the weeping willow tree. In elementary school, a friend and I picked our library books together, so that we could trade books half way through the week otherwise I would run out of things to read. I loved to read mysteries, historical fiction, about everyday people and even poetry!
While I loved to read, I did not always write stories. In college I studied to be a Speech Therapist and I continue to provide speech therapy services in nursing homes. However, as I read books to my children, I realized that I wanted to write stories that children would love. So I took a writing course and began to learn about the craft of writing and the business of publishing. The first stories I had accepted for publication were in magazines for children.
I've had four picture books accepted for publication. Mr. Worry: A Story about OCD (2004), was chosen by International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY) to be included in the Outstanding Books for Young People with Disabilities 2005 catalog and traveling exhibit. I Can’t Stop: A Story about Tourette Syndrome (2005), received a 2006 Oppenheim Toy Portfolio award and was a 2005 Bank Street College of Education Best Book.
Mr. Worry, is close to my heart because my son has OCD. I feel that books are a wonderful way to explain a difficult topic and are a useful place to start a discussion with a child. So I wrote a story about OCD to help children and their families deal with this difficult disorder.
In 2017 The Day I ran Away (April 2017) and No More Noisy Nights (Fall 2017)were published by Flashlight Press! The Day I Ran Away won a Gold Mom's Choice award. No More Noisy Nights was picked by Netlix producers to have a cameo appearance in season 2 of their show, Easy.
I live in Fort Wayne, Indiana with my husband Keith and one crazy cat. My children, Evan (29) and Beth (27) were always able to talk me into buying them a book. There are books everywhere in this house of readers-on bookshelves, on tables, in boxes in the basement, even in the bathroom.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 30, 2006I have a son 9 years old diagnosed with OCD 6 months ago. We have had a terrible time to get him to even go to therapy much less open up and participate. He has had much embarrassment and shame. I got him this book and at first he would not let me read it to him. Finally after much thought he decided to go for it. After reading this book he totally opened up to me and we talked for over a hour about his OCD. He said for the first time he didn't feel alone. He read this book 6 times the first day and even slept with it. He couldn't quit talking about how it is the best book he ever read. We were able to use this little boys struggles and compare them to my sons. It was like the first time that someone actually understood what he was going through. I was hesitant to buy it because it seemed to be for younger kids, but I sure am glad now!!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 21, 2021I wasn’t sure about this book, simply because my son is probably older than the intended audience. However, he really related to the character, and felt relieved that he wasn’t weird. (His words, not mine). I appreciate that the book doesn’t stick to just the well known symptoms, like a preoccupation with germs, but also included intrusive thoughts, which is my son’s main issue. I definitely recommend this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 26, 2017cute book, my 11 year old daughter read it an it's a great way to start a discussion about OCD. She really relates to the character. May be a bit on the young side for her, but got the point across. It was recommended by her therapist to help her identify her OCD symptoms as OCD symptoms, and not just "weird things I do". I feel that the book has put things in perspective for her so she can begin to work on managing symptoms better.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 10, 2017Reading this book for the first time with my son, was like reading his own story. We are fresh on this path of understanding, and for us, it is important he knows he is not alone. This book made me realize just how much he does that is not under his control. He also recognized himself in the story. Very good first step.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 17, 2018I like the story itself but this is the second book I have ordered off Amazon to try and help my six year old and they all refer to medication. I don’t understand why taking medication needs to be a part of these books. What about children that can’t take medication or who’s parents choose not to medicate? There are other ways aside medication to help and the book is for children. Medication is not really a child topic. It was a good book aside that.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 25, 2014I am a therapist and have used this book with children who have OCD. It is a great book and tells a very helpful story in explaining what OCD is in words and in story-form that is easy for children to understand. It also gives helpful suggestions in the story on how to begin to manage OCD as a child. The story is very relateable to children.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 29, 2012When our seven-year-old son was diagnosed with OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder), we immediately went to Amazon.com and bought this book. This book helped our son understand his diagnosis and how it affected him. It wasn't a book full of medical terms. The author explains OCD using kid-friendly words in a story format. I will continue to recommend this book to all parents with OCD kids.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 26, 2016AND It changed my life. I might have my husband read this to me before bed. If I had this as a kid I probably would have turned out normal

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly beneficial
This is an excellent book. I was introduced to the story when teaching a primary age child with OCD by the child herself; she wanted to share it with the class to help them understand what she was experiencing and why she behaved as she did. After some discussion I read the story to them without her present and answered as many questions as I could. The children then had time to reflect and the next day we gathered any further questions they had and the OCD child and myself looked at them before discussing them with the class. The story works so well at helping young children undrstand what another child is feeling and why they might be acting a 'bit strange'. Read sensitively with care and support this will help children see through the 'annoying habits' that others seem to have and begin to understand that everyone is different and that there may be some deep, unavoidable reasons behind the behaviour of others.
(Words in inverted commas are direct quoes from children in the class)
