Born in Torquay in 1890, Agatha Christie began writing during the First World War and wrote over 100 novels, plays and short story collections. She was still writing to great acclaim until her death, and her books have now sold over a billion copies in English and another billion in over 100 foreign languages. Yet Agatha Christie was always a very private person, and though Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple became household names, the Queen of Crime was a complete enigma to all but her closest friends.

Entertaining, classic mystery kept me guessing
5 stars for Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie.Detective Hercule Poirot resolves a case in Syria and must forego his planned few days of relaxation after being urgently called back to London regarding a new development in a separate case. He is able to obtain last-minute accommodations on the Orient Express train with the help of a rail company executive and friend, but they are forced to stop unexpectedly in the countryside of Yugoslavia during a blizzard and must wait days for snow to be cleared from the tracks.During the night, a passenger is murdered in their sleeping car! The door is locked from the inside. The window is open, but there are no footprints in the snow. The murderer must be one of the other passengers, but who?! And why?Murder on the Orient Express has a wide range of interesting suspects and the always clever (and he knows it) French Detective Poirot. The rail company executive Bauc and Dr. Constantine try to help Poirot determine who the murderer is, but of course every new piece of information changes their suspicions and adds to the complexity of the case. This classic mystery is a very entertaining story with a satisfying ending, and it truly kept me guessing until nearly the end.

I haven't read a mystery of this ilk in a long time and it was a breath of fresh air. Agatha Christie wrote this book in 1934 and it's a beaut! It stars her famous Belgian detective, Hercule Poirot. It seems to me many books and movies like 'After The Thin Man' have stolen Agatha's idea of gathering all the suspects for one final interrogation to solve the case. Can anybody do it better than Agatha, who has out-sold every published work except the Bible and Shakespeare? Maybe the only character that can challenge Hercule Poirot is Agatha's other famous sleuth, Miss Jane Marple. Since this book was written so long ago, it gives the reader the flavor of the times, such as the European attitude towards America, the style of clothing, and the reminiscence of long train trips.

The story starts with our hero boarding the Orient Express in Aleppo, Syria, after a successful investigation for the French Army. He meets one of the directors of the company that runs the Orient train, M.Bouc. Hercule Poirot joins the other thirteen passengers, M. Bouc, a Dr. Constantine, and one conductor in the Athens-Paris Coach. And folks we are off to the races!! One of the passengers, a Mr. Ratchett, who is of vile and dubious character turns up dead on the first night of the trip. He's been stabbed twelve times in his bunk. To make matters worse, the train is now at a standstill, snowed-in by a blizzard. That means the killer is stranded on the train and posses a threat to the remaining twelve passengers on the Athens-Paris car. As you probably guessed, the director of the train, M. Bouc, engages our lovable and pyknic detective, Hercule Poirot. Let the Lumosity exercises begin! The rest of the novel is a cat-and-mouse game between the twelve passengers and Hercule. I tried to figure out who the killer was and I didn't even come close!

It's amazing to me how Agatha Christie can make the reader visualize all seventeen people on the train in only 265 pages. I liked the way Agatha has Hercule use the director ( M. Bouc ), and the doctor ( Constantine ) as a sounding board to test his theories. He actually makes them think that they are helping him solve the mystery. This is a very sound novel and completely enjoyable. I am totally drawn- in to this series and hope to read 'Death on The Nile' in the very near future. Do yourself a favor and read A Hercule Poirot novel right now, especially this one.

For those readers that like to put themselves into Hercule Poirot’s character and try their luck at solving the murder, this book is handmade for you. But beware! Poirot is an amazing sleuth with uncanny deduction abilities. It is a hard act to follow even though there are clues aplenty. ‘Murder on the Orient Express’ is Christie’s most famous work, with 3 movies based on it. I fear that it would be redundant to go over the specifics of the site and situation of the murder. A large part of the book is devoted to Poirot interviewing the suspects, and it is only the great personality of the detective that carries the plot forward thereby avoiding falling into a tedious slog. I was captivated by the interviews, with meeting such an array of great characters. The dialogue in the interrogations was some of the most edgy and enlightening in the book. I liked the way Christie went over the clues (and red herrings) several times, apparently so that the reader could keep up. Only problem was, that it was still difficult to keep all the who-said-what-when straight. The ending. One has to forgo believability a bit, but it was indeed memorable, and for me, unpredictable. In the end I was proud of Poirot and his astonishing powers of reason. A fun read.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I read it once, watched the visual adaptation (2 of them), then re-read the book!

I have been reading a number of Agatha Christie’s novels and this was another very exciting one. I liked the plot twist — that the train was a jury of 12 to punish the victim for a crime he should have been found guilty of in a court of law (but which he escaped on technicalities).

I also liked the humanity of this one. The presentation of the two theories and why ultimately the first was preferred so as to protect all those involved in the murder.

The threads were a bit hard to follow because there were many different “clues”, but the overall story came together very well. We never did find out in the end who stabbed the victim but ultimately that didn’t matter.

Linda Arden tried to take responsibility as the master mind but in the end, she was protected on a theory of just desserts — Ratchett or Cassetti (being his real identity) finally got what he deserved.
