Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

On a walk through the sunny countryside, nine endearing ducks realize they are being spied on by a hungry fox. One by one they peel off from the flock, luring their not-so-wily pursuer ever closer to a rickety bridge until, in a triumphant ending, Mr. Fox gets his just deserts. Two subordinate story lines, consisting of the ducks' own silly comments and the presence of a small frog, provide additional fodder for giggles. Little ones should also appreciate the repetitive rhymes as the brood dwindles--"Six ducks six did balancing tricks," "Two ducks two had things to do." Hayes's pastoral watercolors dovetail neatly with the lighthearted mood of this merry counting book. Ages 3-6.

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-- An original story that reads like a fingerplay."Nine ducks nine walked out in line./ Mr. Fox was watching./One duck ran away,/ down to the rickety bridge." On each double-page spread, there is one less duck, the fox gets closer, and the bridge becomes more crowded. Finally, Mr. Fox pounces, the bridge breaks, and he falls into the river, after which he "went home to his den and never chased those ducks again." Hayes' slightly overfull watercolor and ink illustrations are endearing. Eight of the nine ducks are white; the yellow-and-black speckled one that resembles a large duckling is, of course, the last to go. On each page, speech balloons allow the ducks to comment, ("Foxes are silly," "He can't see me," "He's coming," "I'm hungry," "I'm off!"). The fox isbig, scruffy, and klutzy--menacing without looking actually dangerous. The text does not flow smoothly, since only one line per page rhymes. The art and story line are, nonetheless, appealing and will be enjoyed by preschoolers. --JoAnn Rees, Sunnyvale Pub . Lib . , CA

Hayes' concept book couches counting in a tale of the "weak" triumphing over the "strong." As the nine ducks lure Mr. Fox deeper and deeper into their trap, readers follow their trail as it traverses full bleed, double page spreads of pastoral watercolors anchored by outlines. The repetitive text and winnowing number of identical white ducks heightens the tension and sense of impending doom until it crescendos with Mr. Fox's comeuppance. This role reversal--the hunter becoming the hunted--is cleverly telegraphed by the visual uniqueness of the sole remaining duck. The presence of the narrative makes this a number book suitable for learning readers. Moreover, the simplicity of the plot makes it an excellent choice for facilitating a reasoned discussion among high school students about the use of repetition as a rhetorical strategy--helping them progress from merely identifying this technique to analyzing its significance and impact.

Okay, so my daughter is only 16 months old, but we have about 50 different books for her to choose from and this is clearly her favorite. We have read this to her so many times that we sometimes hide it behind the others. No matter, she is too smart for that. She will pull out all the others and throw them on the floor until she finds "Nine Ducks Nine".

This is a wonderfully illustrated book about ducks. It is not as simplistic as that, though. Counting with a repetitious rhyme is the clencher that keeps kids reading. Their interest is maintained by the cute ducks that are constantly harassed by a fox. The story line is ingenious. I recommend all children be exposed to this book. It lends itself to numerous activities that will keep their imagination flowing.

I used this book as a starter for a maths class in the reception year. The children acted out the roles of the fox and ducks, whilst learning counting. Excellent
