Peril at End House: A Hercule Poirot Mystery: The Official Authorized Edition: 7 (Hercule Poirot Mysteries) Paperback – 25 Oct. 2011
In this official authorized edition from the Queen of Mystery, a young woman who has recently survived a series of very close calls appears to be the target of a dedicated killer--and it's up to Hercule Poirot to save her life.
On holiday on the Cornish Riviera, Hercule Poirot is alarmed to hear pretty Nick Buckley describe her recent "accidental brushes with death." First, on a treacherous Cornish hillside, the brakes on her car failed. Then, on a coastal path, a falling boulder missed her by inches. Later, an oil painting fell and almost crushed her in bed.
So when Poirot finds a bullet hole in Nick's sun hat, he decides that this girl needs his help. Can he find the would-be killer before he hits his target?

About the author

Born in Torquay in 1890, Agatha Christie began writing during the First World War and wrote over 100 novels, plays and short story collections. She was still writing to great acclaim until her death, and her books have now sold over a billion copies in English and another billion in over 100 foreign languages. Yet Agatha Christie was always a very private person, and though Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple became household names, the Queen of Crime was a complete enigma to all but her closest friends.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 February 2013On holiday Poirot and Hastings meet young Nick Buckley, who has had four near brushes with death in the last four days. Poirot deduces that these aren't accidents, but deliberate attempts to murder her, drawing them both in a complicated case as they try to figure out who the murderer is and why they might want Nick dead.
This is an entertaining and well-written story, with the twists and turns you'd expect from Christie. Hugh Fraser is, as always, an excellent narrator, thanks to his own pleasant reading voice and his ability to provide a number of different voices for the characters and bring them to life. Even though it has a running time of over five hours, this held my attention throughout.
Thorough enjoyable and highly recommended.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 20 October 2022Following the well-documented struggles of writing her previous two novels, Peril At End House is a welcome return to form for the Queen of Crime. Poirot is once more assisted by his good friend Hastings who chronicles events and even Inspector Japp makes an appearance.
While staying at a Cornish hotel, Poirot discovers a bullet hole in local resident Nick Buckley’s sun hat. After talking to her and learning this is just part of a recent run of bad luck, he feels his age as he tries to convince the young bon viveur that it’s actually something more sinister.
But Miss Buckley is poor and has no enemies, so who would want her dead and what’s their motive? Poirot can’t find the answers as he frantically tries to protect her and more attempts are made on her life.
Tragedy strikes before the case is solved but there’s an ingenious twist and once more Christie has everybody fooled. Only this time, not just the reader!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 18 August 2023As ever, Agatha Christie keeps thing fresh in the world of Hercule Poirot, by asking him to solve a murder that has not yet been committed. And he is certainly kept busy doing so.
Whilst on holiday at a seaside hotel, Poirot meets Nick, a woman full of joie de vivre, who has had a series of near-death misses. When a shot is fired and a bullet found, Nick begin to believe that someone wishes to murder. Poirot offers to keep her safe, but then a body is discovered.
As ever there are plenty of suspects, a sinister house-keeper, a pair of overly friendly Australians , an best-friend addicted to drugs and her financially-strapped beau.
Poirot is his usual pernickety self and I enjoyed learning more about him; his choice of square loaves, leading to perfectly square slices of toast, his choice of 2 same-sized boiled eggs and his wish for Hastings to part his hair in the middle, and not to one side.
But this crime stumps him! Lists are made, questions drawn up and a sleepless night spent until Poirot reaches his conclusion.
I'm enjoying reading through the Poirot books, each one as fresh as the last. The choice of solving a crime before it has been committed was extremely engaging. Highly enjoyable, full of red-herrings and a set of flawed characters, Christie goes from strength to strength!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 25 March 2017This is one of my favourite AC stories, along with Death on the Nile, Murder on the Orient Express, and Cat among the Pigeons. This CD 5 disc recording is an excellent production of a much-loved tale. Naturally, I highly recommend this murder mystery to all that love this genre. This is a replacement as I inadventally lost a disc when selling a CD player. Such is my love for this story that no amount of money would deter me from buying a replacement! What higher recommendation than that could I possibly provide!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 5 March 2018Holy twist ending Batman! I've recently got in to Agatha Christie. I've enjoyed Murder on the Orient Express, the ABC murders and the Murder of Roger Ackroyd and have been amazed by them all but this one takes the biscuit! I still had no idea until right at the end what the twist would be! It's amazing! Such an enjoyable read! You must read this book!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 September 2020A typical but nevertheless enjoyable read from the best crime writer. The settings and characters are obviously of an era, but that doesn't detract from what is a well written and enjoyable read.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 13 March 2015Not having read an Agatha Christie for 25 years plus, I must confess to having little to compare it against. There are, of course, the sumptuous ITV 'Poirot' productions starring David Suchet though. And I remembered this one quite well. (Perhaps a disadvantage when one can predict the twist and turn of events in a whodunnit.)
The ITV Poirot version was far superior to the book, in my opinion. The novel is so heavily driven by dialogue, usually between Hastings and Poirot, and often with a suspect, then another suspect, and yet another, that there is no room left for description, no room for characterisation. The TV series had no option but to paint the period detail, to flesh out the characters - and so much can be said in pictures. Here, in the novel, there is minimal commitment to these staple requirements. In fact, as the plot progresses, it seems to accelerate. The turn of events and the final denouement a breathless race to the finishing line with stark new facts and a curiously deranged suspect lumbering incongruously onto the home straight in the dying moments.
A diverting read and cleverly orchestrated, no doubt about that, yet it felt, at times, rather more like the workings out of a mathematical problem than a dramatic murder mystery novel.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 12 May 2022I always enjoy it when Poirot and Hastings go further afield and I picked this novel after watching the TV version and I was not disappointed. I love the relationship between Hastings and Poirot and reading more of Christie's novels makes you realise what a truly excellent job Suchet did of bringing Poirot to life. The story is a bit fantastic if you think too much about it but she does the twists and turns so well that you don't really notice and just enjoy it for what it is an entertaining whodunnit.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Rollercoaster by Agatha!!
Another great book from Agatha Christie! The story kept me guessing and wondering per the norm. The ending was not at all what I thought and had a wonderful twist. If you are a fan of Agatha Christie, you will like this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars A most excellent Poirot story
I remember seeing this dramatized on TV but couldn’t recall who done what so I thought I’d read the book. It feels like a very different style than many of the stories in this series, although Poirot has frequently been away from home. The conclusion is a double whammy and not predictable. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buon libro di evasione
Buon libro di evasione per mantenere in allenamento l'inglese. Tuttavia non va dimenticato che è un libro molto datato e quindi le espressioni idiomatiche non sono attualissime.

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific Plot!
This book was fabulous! I was however, able to solve the mystery even before Poirot had any clues to follow. Many readers will find it very intriguing because of the plot twists in the book.
