Re-edit:Eve is just trying to survive everyday life in the projects of New York. She hides behind her books and baggy clothing, praying that she doesn’t get noticed or become an easy target. That changes one night when she is nearly raped by gang members and later pursued by one. Unwillingly give up on her dreams of becoming an attorney, she strives even harder to make it out of the projects. It becomes her sole focus, until she meets Vincent. He is complicated and arcane, with an air of danger and excitement. The two form an instant connection, even though Vincent’s life is complicated. It’s as if he is torn between who he wants to be and who he is expected to be. This is the first novel that I have read by Jessica Ruben and I wasn’t disappointed. I could easily relate to the struggles that Eve faced. The only disclaimer is that it does end in sort of a cliff hanger, but that only makes me excited for the next installment.     You know what my first thought was after finishing Rising?

    I HAVE TO TELL EVERYONE ABOUT THIS BOOK! I HAVE TO GET THEM TO READ IT. 

    It was one of the most exhilarating reading experience I've ever had. And I tell you what, the feels that attacked me while reading this novel are impossible to replicated. It was beyond intoxicating, so immersive and all-consuming that it shocked me. Originally, I picked up this novel on a whim, wasn't even intending to read the whole thing. My plan was to get through a chapter, get a feel for the writing, and figure out if I would review or not. But what happened was something else, it was ANOTHER LEVEL altogether. Rising turned into a one-sitting binge-fest I could not put it down.

    I felt fevered by the storyline, so besotted by Vincent and his mysterious life, so deeply connected to Eve and her dire circumstances. On top of that, in a market where the same old stories are regurgitated time after time, she spun this tale into something new and original, and I was totally won over. Rising is a whirlwind of passion and angst, and this series promises to be one hell of a ride that I am more than ready to embark on. I truly can't recommend it enough.

    In a neighborhood run by gangs, Eve keeps her head down and stays in the shadows. Desperate for a way out of that life, she's 18 and on the cusp of getting into college. One night Eve's sister drags her to an underground fight and there she see's Vincent, an enigma she can't take her eyes off of. Drawn to each other, a magnetism that can't be denied pulls these two together and something sexy and sweet is formed. But life's not simple, each of them live by a complicated set of rules and things get intense and twisty and so so so good.

    Gah, I wish I could say more plot wise, but I can't! I want you to experience the brilliance of this story blindly. Just know it's rough, raw, and heavy. Eve pulls on your heart strings with her sweetness, naivety, and vulnerability, and Vincent is so dark and enticing. Together these two are a force of nature. They captivate you, overwhelm you, drawing you in from first to last page. I am so passionate over this story, so crazy over them, and I truly can’t swoon enough. Jessica Ruben might be a new indie author, but she’s most certainly one to watch, especially after this outstanding debut that left me dying for more. 

    And PS: Rising is book 1 in a trilogy. It's a continuous storyline that focuses on one couple.

    Ruben starts this story with a BIG BAMB. I was so scare for this young woman, Eve. She has been trying hard to escape the life of gangs, danger and poverty she was born into. She is a bookworm, so intelligent, sweet and good. Her way of getting out of that hell she calls life is getting into college. All her time she spent between the pages of a book. Nothing else catch her eyes until one night. Eve is drag by her sister to an MMA fight and there he was, Vincent.

    They experience an instant attraction. He was big and dangerous with so many secrets. Vincent tried hard to stay away from Eve. She was too good for him but he felt the need to be near and protect her even if it’s from the distant and himself.

    This was a great start to their love story and that cliffhanger left me ready to dive into book 2 which actually my current read.

    What a debut novel from Jessica Ruben!!! I was not expecting this to blow me away and Rising did just that!! I freaking FLOVED it!!     Eve is a eighteen year old high school senior that lives in a gang infested low income housing building in New York. You would think she would become a product of her environment but she is has always been book smart, not street smart. Her goal is to get out of the projects and attend college but with so many factors working against her she must stay focused on the end prize. freedom. Her older sister, Janelle, is always there for her and looks out for her. She dropped out of high school and had to get a job to help pay the bills so Janelle was not going to let the same thing happen to Eve. Their mother is more of a part time mom only coming home when she is coming down from a bender or not with her latest client. Eve isn't a party girl, she would rather get lost in a good book then socialize but when Eve takes her out one night, she doesn't realize her life is about to change.

    Janelle takes Eve to a club where they also have underground fights. The main effect features The Bull and Eve is immediately in awe of the male specimen she is watching. She's never seen anything like him. She is only used to the thugs and punks from her neighborhood. The Bull aka Vincent is like an enigma that she is drawn to. After the fight she seems him at the bar and they seem to hit it off. Their chemistry is off the charts and they both can't resist the pull they feel for one another.

    Time goes by and it seems that Eve sees Vincent on occasion. Every time they are together she feels like there is something more but Vincent seems to keep her at arms length. He give her bits and pieces of himself and Eve knows he's holding back. With graduation and college on the horizon she knows she must focus getting out of the projects and going to college so she accepts that maybe her time with Vincent isn't now. She accepts that a guy like Vincent is not for a girl like her. He oozed sex, power, and money where she was just a girl from the wrong side of town with nothing to offer.

    What does the future hold for Eve? Will she be able to rise above her upbringing and make it out of the projects or will she be like her mother and be a slave to the gangsters and thugs that are on every corner? Rising is a MUST read book and I just LOVED every second of it!! I cannot wait to see what is next for Eve as she starts a new chapter in her life!

    Fantastic debut novel Jessica and awesome start to Vincent & Eve's journey! This was a page turner l did not want to stop reading! I felt so much for Eve what she has endured and Vincent so mysterious! So happy l waited for all three books because now l can binge read YAY!
