Purchase options and add-ons
A young woman is caught up in a dangerous double life on behalf of her country during World War Two in Spy, by the world's favourite storyteller Danielle Steel.
Alexandra Wickham is a stunning beauty who seems destined for a privileged life. But fate, a world war and her own quietly rebellious nature lead her down a different path.
By 1939, Britain is at war. From her home in idyllic Hampshire Alex makes her way to London as a nursing volunteer. But her fluency in French and German draws the attention of another, more secret, branch of the service.
Within a year, Alex is immersed in a new world, shocking her family in trousers and bright red lipstick. But she is forbidden to tell anyone about her work, not even the pilot she falls in love with. While her country and those dearest to her pay the terrible price of war, Alex learns the art of espionage, leading to life-and-death missions and a long career in exotic places and historic times.
As her career progresses, the risks Alex must take bring her dangerously close to discovery. Can she keep her secrets hidden?

- Reviewed in the United States on March 11, 2023I fell in love with Spy even before I read the first page, what drew me in was the cover and from there it was rollercoster ride of mystery, intrigue, all wrapped in a 1940's plot of WW2, England and a young women's desire to do something other than to marry into a wealthy family. Danielle Steele did not disappoint this time, with lots of details of the beginning impact of WW2 when children were sent to the country to be safe from bombings in England, to how a spy is born. The various countries we have the opporuntunity to visit throughout the novel provides the difference in living as someone affluent in the military and those who are not as fortunate. The only downside I had with the novel was the the very end, it seemed to wrap up quite abruptly to me. I would have liked to see where Alexandra's remaining life lead her with the new man/friend in her life. As I said, though, a minor thing in my opinion. One of Danielle Stelle's best work in a long time, very reminiscent of her early works.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 20, 2021When a book ends too soon it means it was a good read. That is certainly the case here...it seems that you have just met all of the characters and are wondering how they will influence each other in the future when the book ends. The fact that you care about what may yet happen proves the books effectiveness. Whether their stories continue is yet to be seen...enjoy the book and join me in waiting.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 20, 2019An enlightening look into the life of a spy! With Danielle Steel's latest release SPY, she delves into the life of a family in late 1930's Hampshire as World War II is raging and their loved ones are getting into the midst of it all.
Finding herself at odds with what life is expecting of her and where it's leading her, Alexandra sets out to volunteer during the war at the First Aid Nursing center, but her fluent language skills quickly gain the attention of intelligence that tempts her into spying on the enemy. During this time she meets and falls in love with a pilot, but she must keep her secret assignments to herself.
We continue to follow her life and assignments as the war ends and she marries her pilot and goes on to raise a family as she continues to compile secrets she can share with no one.
I highly recommend this story to anyone who enjoys a historical romance intermixed with turmoil, secrets and intrigue. Alexandra was easy to become enchanted with, and following her through all of her exploits was quite riveting.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 13, 2020I got this book this past summer for my mom for her birthday and since we couldn't have a party due to the Covid 19 restrictions I had it shipped straight to her home. I first had a sample sent to my kindle to see if it was something that she would enjoy. I haven't read any Danielle Steel books for quite a while although I've never been disappointed in any of them in the past and I we are both fans of books set during WWII. So then once hooked I had to buy it for my own. I really enjoyed this book I was quickly reminded that she never had any problems with having main characters go through deaths of close friends and family members and won't say anything more as to not give any spoilers away. If you have not read any Danielle Steel lately or have followed her book after book I highly recommend this book to both types of her readers.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 16, 2024This book was ok, a little heavy and overly detailed on some of the history, and some things were repeated and over explained in some chapters. I usually like Danielle Steel’s books, but sometimes I feel like her stories repeat. Since she writes 7 books per year, it feels like she may be running out of original ideas or forgetting that she has used some of these plots already. Not my favorite but not the worst one she’s written.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 1, 2023I really enjoyed the strong female character, she was well developed and drew you quickly into the story. The story slows considerably about halfway through, picking up again with more surprises. I couldn’t put this book down. Thoroughly enjoyed.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great read
Danielle Steele at her best, the story kept you interested to the end. Not only a love story but an insight to the war years, and the brave war heros.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good read and have passed it along to a friend on my recommendation.
An interesting plot with lots to learn about the second World War with personal perspectives.
A happy ending much needed in these times.

2.0 out of 5 stars The most boring book of Danielle Steel
The entire life of a person without delving into any particular moment or aspect. Just describe, quickly, quickly. In one chapter you can summarize 10 years. I spent the entire book waiting for it to get to the "heart" of the matter, but it didn't.

1.0 out of 5 stars Hab mich durchs erste 1/4 gekämpft. Mehr ging wirklich nicht.
Das Buch ist äußerst langweilig, ergeht sich in unendlichen Wiederholungen und ist in sehr, sehr flacher Sprache geschrieben.

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful novel
She is an intelligent English woman who becomes a spy because of her ideas about politics and her ability to speak several languages. The book tells the story since she was a teenager until she was 84 years old or more. So it is a big story that is worth reading. In the story, there are loss, romance, secrets, emotions, and big adventures.
