Author, poet, and literary critic, Edgar Allan Poe is credited with pioneering the short story genre, inventing detective fiction, and contributing to the development of science fiction. However, Poe is best known for his works of the macabre, including such infamous titles as The Raven, The Pit and the Pendulum, The Murders in the Rue Morgue, Lenore, and The Fall of the House of Usher. Part of the American Romantic Movement, Poe was one of the first writers to make his living exclusively through his writing, working for literary journals and becoming known as a literary critic. His works have been widely adapted in film. Edgar Allan Poe died of a mysterious illness in 1849 at the age of 40.

5.0 out of 5 stars Teenage poetry

Interesting poem by the young Poe. I was most interested in Tamerlane himself, not a lot about that in the poem, but interesting fervent teenage imagining, 😊

Reviewed in the United States on 21 February 2023
I have always like Poe since the first day I discovered ten volumes of his works! In an obscure bookstore. Published in 1904. I knew of him an in my late teens, in high school. Read as much as I could find. I was a young man going through much of what his life was like. I felt and wrote poetry not unlike he did. I never lost my appreciation of him as an American author. I now in my seventh decade, continue to feel that way. This book was published on demand two days before it was shipped to me, on February 18. It is taking on a new meaning to me. I enjoyed reading it very much do know some proud of him that was hitting all these years.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tamerlane was new to me.

A book of different poems by Poe with Tamerlane and his rise to power is the primary feature. Poe evokes such strong images and feelings in all his writings. This series is a nice addition to add to your list of poems to read.

4.0 out of 5 stars $0.99 for Poe's first poems was worthwhile
Reviewed in the United States on 23 July 2017
I'm going to the Poe Museum in Richmond next week and wanted to see what this rare first collection of Poe's work was like. There are reportedly only 12 original copies remaining of the 50 self-published by Poe.

There was another reviewer who claimed there were no poems received; they only got a review. Well, my $0.99 kindle purchase has the poems. And I thought they were decent. (Though I lack any academic understanding of poetry.)

So as a historically interesting bit of work, I found Tamerlane and Other Poems to be intriguing and worth my time.

1.0 out of 5 stars Inspiration for Young Authors
Reviewed in the United States on 20 July 2022
I thought I had read every that Poe had published. I had never heard of this book before I read The Storied Life of A. J. Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin. She makes many book recommendations in that tale of two book lovers falling in love.

Tamerlane’s obscurity is well deserved. This thin and feeble attempt at poetry has no hint of the compelling rhythms of The Raven and Bells. And the longish title poem Tamerlane has no story and makes no point. There is not a single passage that I would like to highlight either for being strikingly good or strikingly bad. All 40 pages are uniformly mediocre.

But if you are a young aspiring poet, short story writer or novelist, you should read this. It could be the inspiration that you need.

Poe published this abomination at the age of 18. Only 50 copies were printed and mercifully few were ever purchased and read.

That he went on to become a great writer should give you hope that you too might rise far above your earliest attempts. In that sense, this book is so bad that it's good.
