I’ve long been waiting to get to read a H.P. Lovecraft story for years. I read Algernon Blackwood’s “The Willows” a few years back and loved it, and hearing that there were similarities to Blackwood and Lovecraft, I was looking forward to “The Call of the Cthulhu.”

Lovecraft sets the stage with such a powerful, gripping opening sentence that not only forebodes danger and peril, but certainly depicts a feeling of a other-worldly presence in the natural world: “We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far.”

When the narrator stumbles upon some notes of a dead professor and a strange object, he relates with awe, wonder, and dread, the circumstances of this ill-fated professor and the awful creature that is attached to his story.

Lovecraft’s tale relies quite heavily on a back-telling of the mythology of this creature, as well as the circumstances that leads to the final, harrowing and ultimately, gripping ending. I would venture to say that the first half to two-thirds of this story is simply exposition and detail to set up what is to come. Some of this is quite dense, I will admit. This does consume quite a bit of the flow, and does take some patience for a reader. However, I think the pay off at the end of this “weird tale” is worth it.

Lovecraft is an amazing worthsmith that can create such an ominous atmosphere and feel. His vocabulary is quite dense and difficult, just as a warning, though. This tale of his is dark and ventures into subjects and places that humans would not want to visit. Literally this tale is dripping with an ambience of unsettling forebodings, and it builds and builds towards its final conclusion.

H.P. LoveCraft tells a great story or horror and fight. A friend recommended this book to me and I can say it was a great short read. It makes one imagination stir up little horrors and makes going to sleep a little tougher.

Give this book a read it’s short and Halloween is around the corner. It is a classic that will entertain and possibly scare you.

In The Call of Cthulhu HP Lovecraft has fashioned a truly spooky story that haunts the reader long after finishing the book. The concept is simple enough, a man has spent his life searching for a strange cult. He doesn't find it, but he finds the trail of men who did come across its worshipers and he puts the evidence together to discover an astounding truth. The truth is so horrible he can't face it and wants the story of the cult, all the evidence he has gathered, destroyed. What makes the story suspenseful is the reader is given the evidence a little at a time; thus, the reader builds a picture of the terrible facts as the story is told. Because the story is told from front to back, that is, from the present to the past, the author presents the frightening truth at the end of the tail. Lovecraft's description of the evil and the damp stones it inhabits is nothing short of masterful.

The author leaves the reader feeling alone in the vastness of the universe, with something awful residing in his home but totally beyond any understanding. It is the transference of the gut level of dread from the author to the reader that makes the story so powerful.

On this story was so wordy and studious I was sometimes distracted from what is actually happening but I must say that Sir Cthulhu is a bit boring at time.

Ever wondered what lied in the deep dark places of the world? That's the question that is at the heart of this disturbing tale. While it's classified as a horror piece it reads more like an investigation. Thurston, a young academic who had just inherited a strange manuscript from his late uncle sets out to learn more about a very curious phenomenon. People have been dying and strange cults have been revealing themselves all over the world who, despite being apart for thousands of miles, all worship the same strange idols with the same twisted ceremonies.

It leaves a lot to the imagination and only builds it up towards the end. As terrible as Cthulhu's followers are and as bad as their actions they pale in comparison to the monstrosity and his cursed city. Eventually humanity in general feels miniscule at the sheer size of it. Ignorance is bliss as Lovecraft points out and some things are just best left buried away. A good book and it's amazing how much of an impact this short story has had on horror as well as the strong cult following it has gained.

The 1st in HP Lovecraft’s classic Cthulhu series. Nice sized paperback. Easy to read (especially if one understands this was written in the late 1800’s). My only complaint with this edition is that in spite of this book being around for 130ish years, this edition still has TYPOS. For the love of Cthulhu, did all the editors die with Lovecraft himself?

I’d been meaning to read this for ages - finally got around to it and instantly saw why it’s a classic. I didn’t know horror/fantasy could be this sophisticated - or gripping. I can tell that it’s one of those stories I’ll read over and over again - it calls to you, so to speak.

A short but certainly interesting story. Despite being written in 1926 this story still feels as relevant as today’s horror, if not more so. The imagery conjured by Lovecraft helps to build a very mystical and chaotic world.
