Letty Davenport, the brilliant and tenacious adopted daughter of Lucas Davenport, takes the investigative reins in the newest thriller from #1 bestselling author John Sandford.

“Sandford fans rejoice! Davenport next generation has arrived and Letty is exactly the kind of cool-eyed, smart-mouthed, lethally dangerous heroine we’ve been waiting for.” --Lisa Gardner, author of One Step Too Far

By age twenty-four, Letty Davenport has seen more action and uncovered more secrets than many law enforcement professionals. Now a recent Stanford grad with a master’s in economics, she’s restless and bored in a desk job for U.S. Senator Colles. Letty’s ready to quit, but her skills have impressed Colles, and he offers her a carrot: feet-on-the-ground investigative work, in conjunction with the Department of Homeland Security.

Several oil companies in Texas have reported thefts of crude, Colles tells her. He isn’t so much concerned with the oil as he is with the money: who is selling the oil, and what are they doing with the profits? Rumor has it that a fairly ugly militia group might be involved. Colles wants to know if the money is going to them, and if so, what they’re planning.

Letty is partnered with a DHS investigator, John Kaiser, and they head to Texas. When the case quicky turns deadly, they know they’re on the track of something bigger. The militia group has set in motion an explosive plan . . . and the clock is ticking down.

Editorial Reviews

Review

The Investigator is a procedural action thriller in which the technical sleuthing only heightens the tension. Letty is such a capable character, and Mr. Sandford such a fine tactician, it would seem incomprehensible and even cruel to deny readers a swift follow-up.”--Wall Street Journal

“John Sandford created a winning formula with his furiously paced Prey novels, which star Lucas Davenport, a Minnesota detective turned U.S. marshal with a penchant for sharp dressing, high romancing and expert marksmanship. In The Investigator he moves the chess pieces to a different board.”--New York Times

“Sandford’s first Letty Davenport novel is a violent, topical, fast-paced story that’s sure to please action fans.”--Library Journal (starred review)

"Readers are treated to Sandford's well-crafted prose, conversational but never chatty and charged with boisterous humor. A top-line thriller from one of thegenre's heavy hitters."
--Booklist

"A domestic-terrorist plot gives the adopted daughter of storied U.S. Marshal Lucas Davenport her moment to shine. Generations may succeed generations, but Sandford’s patented investigation/action formula hasn’t aged a whit. Bring it on."--
Kirkus Reviews

"Letty Davenport takes center stage in this welcome series spin-off. One of Sandford's best books in years."--
Publishers Weekly

"If John Sandford’s The Investigator isn’t the most-anticipated spring book, it’s darn close…Sandford writes fully realized characters and no doubt he will deepen our understanding of Letty as the series matures.”--Pioneer Press

“Fans of the Lucas Davenport series will find much to like in the adventures of his adopted daughter.”--Criminal Element

Not worth the money. Wait and buy it at half price bookstores.
Texas does NOT support ILLEGAL immigrants. We do not believe in killing them. The leadership of illegals crossing into Texas place innocent women & children out front deliberately before the cowardly men that follow. You showed support for these actions. Letty has no law enforcement training or experience. Yet, you presented her as all knowing. I’ve always liked Letty in previous Prey books. This one is way too unbelievable. Too much fantasy for me. Very disappointed.

Loved this one. Another hit. It has the same structure as other Sanford novels. There are two protagonists one playing off the other. Letty is the leader even though her male partner has a vast amount of experience. Great strong female character. This series is set to go the distance.
Sanford always finds a way to empower someone through legal channels that makes it sound so real.
What I found interesting is that the antagonist is also a well-thought-out character with great depth. This places Jane and Letty at odds—who’s smarter, who’s going to win. Great conflict and an interesting juxtaposition.
The setting plays a major role in this book as it does in most Sanford novels.
I could see some readers not liking this book because of the political triggers. I too read for entertainment and dislike authors who use this medium as a way to vent their political view. But in this case Sanford needed a political view point for fuel his story, to give it legs and make it run. I was okay with it. Better than okay, I was so invested in the story I did not even think about this aspect until I sat down to write the review.
For the most part the overall structure of the book mirrors some of the other Davenport books, where someone in Washington uses the talents of Davenport, in this case Letty, as a secret weapon.
I loved the character development between Kaiser and Letty, their banter. Just the right amount. The bad guys plan progresses at a pace easy to follow and even though the author juggled a lot of crooks and their names, I was never confused or lost. The sign of a true master.
There were a couple of plot holes, one large enough to fall into. Having to do with communication with Letty and Kaiser on the ground cut off from the other law enforcement agencies, why did law enforcement not up a drone, or high-flying surveillance aircraft. Didn’t matter for me I was in it for the ride.

David Putnam author of the Bruno Johnson series.

I have been reading John Sandford books for years and enjoying all of them. In this rare instance I skeptically decided to read this book, developed and centered on a side character and found it to be excellent! The daughter of the main character in Sanford's "Prey" series, Letty Davenport, is the focus of this book and it is a fast moving, intriguing, and excellent read. First of all, it was fun to read about a girl accomplishing great things, pushing forward on a career path that few women get to follow. At the same time, this young woman skillfully and smoothly puts her doubters and critics in their place with her actions, insights, quick comebacks, and steady thinking. The storyline is contemporary, focused on immigration and border control issues along with the political maneuvering and struggles that accompany the issue. Letty and her partner, a new character I hope to see more of, are forced into an ugly battle with a crazed militia funding itself with stolen oil in the Texas oil fields. The militias goal is to prevent immigrants from crossing into the US, by any means. The book is well written, the storyline tight and realistic, the characters both likeable, and some dislikable. I eagerly await the next release in this series!

I've been reading Lucas Davenport novels for quite a long while now, so I was familiar with Letty and since she's so much her father's daughter, I believed I would like a book headed by her. I was very impressed with the effort. Letty is young and resourceful, cool under pressure, and follows her own conscience. She uses her head and asks the questions that elicit information. She parlays a researchers job with an influential senator into an investigation for DHS, looking into the theft of oil. It blows up into an actual militia invasion. A current hot topic used to great effect without taking a political stand, this is a well done book, and a great start to what I hope will be a long literary life. I hope we'll get to see more of Kaiser. He was a fresh perspective. I also hope to see Lucas before too long. A case might bring them together if we're lucky. Exactly the type of novels I've come to expect from the authors and an exciting new heroine.

John Sandford introduced Letty in Naked Prey (1994). She's now an investigator. Sandford has aged all his characters well, and made their jobs and missions age appropriate. He does so with great skill. No wonder that I love them so much.
Sandford has few peers when it comes to crafting a story line. I've read all his stories (over 50 now) and it just keeps getting better.
