A twisty, compelling new novel about one woman's complicated relationship with her mother-in-law that ends in death...

From the moment Lucy met her husband’s mother, she knew she wasn’t the wife Diana had envisioned for her perfect son. Exquisitely polite, friendly, and always generous, Diana nonetheless kept Lucy at arm’s length despite her desperate attempts to win her over. And as a pillar in the community, an advocate for female refugees, and a woman happily married for decades, no one had a bad word to say about Diana…except Lucy.

That was five years ago.

Now, Diana is dead, a suicide note found near her body claiming that she longer wanted to live because of the cancer wreaking havoc inside her body.

But the autopsy finds no cancer.

It does find traces of poison, and evidence of suffocation.

Who could possibly want Diana dead? Why was her will changed at the eleventh hour to disinherit both of her children, and their spouses? And what does it mean that Lucy isn’t exactly sad she’s gone?

Fractured relationships and deep family secrets grow more compelling with every page in this twisty, captivating new novel from Sally Hepworth.

Lucy’s relationship with her mother-in-law Diana has always been short of complicated. Whole Diana was always friendly and polite, Lucy never got the deep bond she was hoping for. Five years after she’s married into the family, Diana is found dead. What first appeared as a suicide, may now be something more. With signs of suffocation and the fact that Diana had changed her will recently to disinherit her two children, what really happened to her?I loved this book. It made me feel so many things. Although it definitely falls in the family drama rather then thriller, I still was intrigued throughout. I felt so frustrated at times because of all the missed moments and misinterpretations due to lack of communication between the characters. I’m glad that you got the point of view of both Diana and Lucy. From Lucy’s perspective, you would think Diana is nothing short from cold. Getting Diana’s point of view gave you a back story that was well needed. Although I did have an idea of “whodunnit”, by the end I was sad about how it happened. I usually save five stars for books that have a twist that make my mouth drop open, but I think Sally Hepworth does an amazing job for the complexity of characters. I thought this was a well written and compelling story from start to finish.

In less than a month, I've devoured my second Sally Hepworth novel, and once again, I found myself unable to put it down. "The mother-in-law" seamlessly blends an easy reading experience with a gripping narrative, drawing readers into its world of suspense and intrigue. Despite its murder storyline, Hepworth manages to maintain a light and engaging tone throughout, making it a truly enjoyable read.

What strikes me most about Hepworth's writing is her ability to craft characters that feel real and relatable, each with their own complexities and secrets. As the plot unfolds, she skillfully weaves together multiple storylines, keeping readers guessing until the very end.

I found myself eagerly turning the pages, eager to unravel the mystery and discover the truth behind the chilling events that unfold. Hepworth's pacing is spot on, never allowing the story to stagnate or lose momentum.

As I reluctantly reached the final pages, I couldn't help but feel a sense of anticipation for Hepworth's next book that I already purchased. Her novels are like literary comfort food—satisfying, addictive, and always leaving you wanting more.

Lucy lost her mother early from cancer. Since then, she always thought she'd have another chance when she got married to have a maternal relationship with her husband's mother. But it isn't to be. Ollie's mother, Diana, isn't a warm and friendly person. Instead, she is distant and cold showing almost no interest in her children or their mates.

Even when Lucy thinks she has done something that will bring she and Diana closer, she is wrong. When Diana gives her a special necklace on her wedding day for her something borrowed, Lucy is touched, that is until Diana makes a point of telling her that it is just borrowed and she expects it back. Surely grandchildren will make a difference but the only difference is that Diana ignores Lucy's wishes on how the children should be raised and does whatever she thinks is best. Diana and her husband Tom are wealthy but they won't even consider helping their children financially with things like house down payments or even health issues. Diana believes that she and Tom made their own way and so should the children.

But now Diana is dead. The police tell the family that it could be suicide as they found a note. But there are unanswered questions. Diana told everyone she had breast cancer but there's no record of it in her medical records and no sign of it at the autopsy. There was a bottle of drugs beside the body that is a common drug used for suicide but again no sign of it being in the body. Diana changed her will right before she died and instead of her children, Ollie and his sister Nettie getting the inheritance they had been expecting their entire lives, the estate is all left to a charity.

Now the police are thinking it may be murder rather than suicide and that the murderer must be a family member. Are they right?

Sally Hepworth is an Australian author who has carved out a space for herself in the publishing world. She specializes in family dramas that have a bit of mystery contained within. Readers will recognize each character's type as someone they are familiar with and the inevitability of Diana's death and it's fallout makes for a compelling read. This book is recommended for readers of either mystery or woman's fiction.

Parenting is difficult under the best of circumstances. Being a mother-in-law is even more difficult. I've had three...the first was an angel, the second mostly absent, the third a holy terror. And I am a mother-in-law. It seems most of us can't get it quite right. My own mother was interfering, so I vowed to be the opposite. Available when they needed me, only offering advice when it was asked for, and even when I didn't approve or agree, supported my children in their decisions on how to raise their children. It wasn't enough.
Lucy in this story is struggling for approval from a rather cold, seemingly uncaring MIL. Diana, the MIL, feels she has to be the tough one because her husband is too generous, too indulgent. Parents and in-laws sometimes have to make nearly impossible decisions for the good of their children. When to help, when to withhold help to force their children to stand on their own.
This is primarily a book about family relationships. But, it's also an engrossing mystery. Ms. Hepworth has done an outstanding job of giving us realistic characters with tremendous depth. A very intriguing story told from basically both sides of Lucy and Diana, with the other family members also involved.
I can easily give this this book my highest recommendations. It is superbly edited, with no flaws or typos that I can recall.

Loved it. Top notch, expert story telling that seems so effortless. Although the story revolves around what happened to a certain character, I found this to be very character centric. They were all fully realized with shades of grey. Much like real people, these family members were not black and white, good or bad. And much like real life, family dynamics are very complicated and the intentions and what motivates people are often misconstrued. I found it an extremely entertaining and thought provoking story, different from the myriad stories out there about the evil mother in law. I was surprised when the reveal about Diana's death is presented, yet it makes perfect sense and wasn't pulled out of thin air. I highly recommend this book.

Reviewed in India on April 27, 2022
I wanted to read this book ever since it was published, because the title is a hot topic amongst married Indian women.

    What I liked:
    a) the dynamics between the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law, their perspectives, backgrounds, where they come from and how it affects their thoughts and actions – why they do what they do.
    b) There are a lot of matter-of-fact statements about relationships.
    c) The part where Lucy and Diana have a conversation and the former mentions how the men in the room thought it was a perfectly normal one and were totally unaware of the hostile undercurrents in it, is simply excellent. The best part was Diana’s retort to Rhonda on the overpriced wedding dress.

What I did not like or found odd:
    a) the pace of the book is slow, it lacked the feel or suspense of a thriller.
    b) The police investigation leaves a lot to be desired, or rather the author has not devoted many pages to it and the reader does not get any idea of the police views, how the investigation concludes is not mentioned at all.
    c) Diana’s background story is incomplete. How Tom and Diana became wealthy is a mystery.
    d) Why Diana chooses to help only Afghan refugee women is not explained. Also why does she not advise them on family planning, instead of just helping them with their multiple deliveries?
    e) Lucy is struggling to take care of one kid and still decides to go for two more! This is absolutely absurd.

Overall, I liked the book for the relationship dynamics more than the mystery part.
