About the authors
Kahlil Gibran: full Arabic name Gibran Khalil Gibran, (January 6, 1883 – April 10, 1931) was a Lebanese-American artist, poet, and writer of the New York Pen League.
Kahlil Gibran was born in the town of Bsharri in the Mount Lebanon Mutasarrifate, Ottoman Empire (north of modern-day Lebanon), to Khalil Gibran and Kamila Gibran(Rahmeh). As a young man Kahlil emigrated with his family to the United States, where he studied art and began his literary career, writing in English and Arabic. In the Arab world, Gibran is regarded as a literary and political rebel. His romantic style was at the heart of a renaissance in modern Arabic literature, especially prose poetry, breaking away from the classical school. In Lebanon, he is still celebrated as a literary hero.
He is chiefly known in the English-speaking world for his 1923 book The Prophet, an early example of inspirational fiction including a series of philosophical essays written in poetic English prose. The book sold well despite a cool critical reception, gaining popularity in the 1930s and again, especially in the 1960s counterculture. Gibran is the third best-selling poet of all time, behind Shakespeare and Laozi.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 30, 2024I first heard about The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran from someone I met on a plane to Virginia. Over mimosas and a conversation about philosophy and life, they recommended it, and I’m glad they did. This book is a true gem, exploring topics like love, freedom, and purpose in a way that feels both timeless and deeply personal. It’s definitely one to keep handy—you’ll find yourself reaching for it again and again for guidance and inspiration. Although it was written over a century ago, its wisdom remains incredibly relevant. A must-read for anyone seeking insight and meaning.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 10, 2019"The Prophet" is a series of poetic prose authored by Khalil Gibran in the early twentieth century. Mister Gibran was born in Lebanon and moved with his family to America as a child. This series of poetic prose has a somewhat abstruse and mystical aspect to it. It is clear to me that this book has many, many fans. I completely respect that. And there is no doubt that the writing is very poetic and at times beautiful. I had to read and reread much of this work numerous times to gain a partial comprehension of the work.
As an American, I make a concerted effort to read the works of authors born in other countries. In that context I really appreciated this reading experience. However I need to confess I ended up being glad that the work was short and was relieved when I had finished it.
I am very glad that I had a chance to read this work. But it was work. It is not a light read. I do not think that the average reader, looking for a light reading experience will particularly enjoy this work. I am sure there is wisdom to be found within. However it is not easily accessed. Speaking strictly for myself I get more from reading the Wisdom Books of the Old Testament of The Bible.
In summary, I am glad that I read this work. I was glad to study the life of the author. I purchased and audiobook narrated by Sandra Cullum and she did an excellent job. But the work is not a light read. My personal appreciation was mostly as a study experience and not every reader is going to enjoy this book. Thank You...

5.0 out of 5 stars Super deep, makes you think
I heard about this book a series (Mr. & Mrs. Smith). Out of curiosity I bought the book. Be warned, this is not a light, easy read. At first I didn’t get the speaker structure but I decided to keep reading and then I understood. Basically a prophet visits some people. The people start to ask him deep, philosophical questions and he gives extensive responses; responses that make you think. Although the responses are ambiguous, they could totally be interpreted into the present and into our lives. At first I wanted to take notes to “translate” - there is a lot of old English and fancy old talk. But in the end I decided to read the whole thing at once and go back to read again while investigating. The second read through is pending but I plan to do it!

3.0 out of 5 stars written VERY big
The text is written so big that it is not comfortable to read, and there are only 20 lines per page. I would rather have a 40 pages book written in normal size than this 100 pages book which looks like a children’s book. Waste of paper.
Otherwise the quality is good.
