The Shadow of Arms Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 10 ratings

A novel of the black markets of the South Vietnamese city of Da Nang during the Vietnam War, based on the author’s experiences as a self-described South Korean mercenary on the side of the South Vietnamese, this is a Vietnam War novel like no other, truly one that sees the war from all sides. Scenes of battle are breathtakingly well told. The plot is thick with intrigue and complex subplots. But ultimately The Shadow of Arms is a novel of the human condition rather than of the exploits and losses of one side or the other in war.

About the Author

HWANG SOK-YONG is one of the contemporary masters of Korean literature. His work, which grapples with the troubled history of his divided country, has resulted in his imprisonment, his exile, and the rare achievement of a wide international readership. Hwang's novels in English includeThe Old Garden, a tragic love story set against the backdrop of the end of the Cold War and South Korea's political revolution of the eighties; The Guest, based on the true account of a violent clash between Communist and Christian neighbors in a Korean village town; and The Shadow of Arms, inspired by his experience as a Korean soldier in the Vietnam War. Some of his recent bestsellers in Korea, where Hwang is among that country's most popular writers, includeBaridegi (Princess Bari) and Gaebapbaragibyeol (The Evening Star), a coming of age novel that Hwang wrote as a blog.

‘Hwang Sok-yong is undoubtedly the most powerful voice of the novel in East Asia today.’ Kenzaburo Oe

Born in 1943 Hwang Sok-yong is arguably Korea’s most renowned author. In 1993, he was sentenced to seven years in prison for an unauthorised trip to the North to promote exchange between artists in North and South Korea. Five years later, he was released on a special pardon by the new president.

He is the recipient of Korea’s highest literary prizes including the Manhae Literary Prize, the Danjae Literary Prize, the Isan Literary Prize, the Daesan Literature Prize for THE GUEST, the Manhae Literary Award Grand Prize, the Korea Culture and Arts Foundation ‘This Year’s’ Art Prize, the Mark of Respect Award and was shortlisted for the Prix Femina Etranger. His novel THE ROAD TO SAMPO (1973) was made into a successful film and has recently been reissued in French by Editions Philippe Picquier. His multi-volume epic JANG GILSAN, serialised in a daily newspaper (1974-84), uses the parable of a medieval bandit to foil the censors. A huge success in North as well as South Korea, it has sold over a million copies and remains a bestseller in Korean fiction today. His novel AT DUSK won the Emile Guimet Prize and was shortlisted for the Man Booker International Prize and his novels FAMILIAR THINGS, PRINCESS BARI, SHIM CHUNG, THE ANCIENT GARDEN, SHADOW OF ARMS have all be published to great acclaim all over the world.

‘The author proves in a downright brilliant way, again and again, why he is seen in Korea as one of the most important national writers.’ Le Monde

5.0 out of 5 stars Ein Krieg beinhaltet mehr als nur die Gefechte an der Front
Reviewed in Germany on 21 July 2017

Unique since this is the Vietnam War from a Korean soldiers perspective. The main character starts as a ground-pounder and finishes his tour as an black market investigator, very believable. Shows corruption throughout that period by all sides.
