The Sigma Protocol: A Novel Kindle Edition

4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 1,229 ratings

From a #1 New York Times–bestselling author, an agent escapes a hospital where the government held him hostage and finds he’s not the man he thinks he is.

On Parrish Island, a restricted island off the coast of Virginia, is a little-known and never-visited psychiatric facility. There, far from prying eyes, the government stores former intelligence employees whose psychiatric states make them a danger to their own government, people whose ramblings might endanger ongoing operations or prove dangerously inconvenient. One of these employees, former Consular Operations agent Hal Ambler, is kept heavily medicated and closely watched. But there's one difference between Hal and the other patients—Hal isn't crazy. With the help of a sympathetic nurse, Hal manages to clear his mind of the drug-induced haze and then pulls off a daring escape.

Now he's out to discover who stashed him here and why—but the world he returns to isn't the one he remembers. Friends and longtime associates don't remember him, there are no official records of Hal Ambler, and, when he first sees himself in the mirror, the face that looks back at him is not the one he knows as his own.

Amazon.com Review

Robert Ludlum's trademark skills of intricate plotting, breakneck pacing, and high-wire drama are all on display in this gripping thriller. After his twin brother dies in a plane crash, Ben Hartman reluctantly takes his place in the investment firm started by their father, a Holocaust survivor. But then an old college buddy tries to kill Ben on a crowded Zurich street, setting off a chain of events that ultimately leads Ben into the thick of a worldwide conspiracy. Behind it is Sigma, a multinational cartel built on the rubble of World War II by industrialists and financiers bent on exploiting wartime technology and protecting their wealth from the threat of communism.

Accompanied by a beautiful American justice department agent, Ben eludes the assassins on his trail and follows Sigma's tentacles across Europe, to Brazil, Washington, and finally to a sanitarium known as the Clockworks in the Austrian Alps, where the horrifying agenda of a perverted new world order is revealed. Ludlum, who died between the writing and publishing of this book, was a master of the genre he helped popularize, and The Sigma Protocol shows him at the peak of his craft. --Jane Adams

From Library Journal

Anna Navarro, special agent for the Justice Department, has been assigned to investigate the deaths of several eminent men, all advanced in age and all connected to a mysterious group called Sigma, founded in the last years of World War II. An accident brings her together with Ben Hartman, an American investment banker who is in Zurich investigating the death of his twin brother and finds himself the target of an assassination attempt. Who is Sigma, and why are some of its members being killed? More importantly, what grand project is in the works? Readers may find the answer to these questions simplistic: Sigma is a partnership of high-ranking statesmen and industrialists, put together not only to spirit wealth out of Germany at the end of the war but also to stop communism's spread. Sigma's goal is to make the world safe for capitalism, a corporation whose board of directors is in charge of Western history itself. Unfortunately, Ludlum's latest novel (he died in March but left outlines for more posthumous thrillers) is not one of his better efforts. Even the sparks that eventually fly between Anna and Ben seem tepid.

Another fantastic novel. I don't know that Robert Ludlum was such a great story teller. Even though the book was written years ago it still has relevance today. It kept your interest and kept the plot moving. I have decided to go back and read all his stand alone novels. I read the entire Covert - One series and that was also excellent. Ludlum is relevant just as the other great authors I read Daniel Silva, Brad Thor, Kylie Mills ,Lee Child, Vince Flynn and J.B Turner and Diane Capri.

Are you sure this is fiction??? I was so engrossed in this story I simply could not stop! It hits so close to the reality of today it's scary but the characters just kept dragging you in further and further.

Fast paced and exciting read. But the characters are predictable and, although there are some good plot twists, they are often very contrived. Sometimes the events seem so implausible that the reader goes beyond the usual suspension of disbelief and the story becomes too unbelievable to generate much emotion.

THE SIGMA PROTOCOL has the usual elements readers have come to expect from Robert Ludlum over the years. It's an action-packed, intricately plotted thrill-ride of a book. At his best, Ludlum is the five-star standard in this genre. So why only four stars here? Primarily because, in a genre characterized by over-the-top conspiracies of truly credibility-stretching proportions, the evil conspiracy in this book goes so much further that it became laughable for me. I just couldn't take it seriously by the time I got to the finish. These guys aren't just out to reinstate the thousand-year reich or anything as mundane as that. These nasties have been firmly in control of events world-wide since the end of World War II. They've managed to manipulate things from behind the scenes for over fifty years. There's more, too, but I don't want to give it all away. Suffice it to say that a pretty good overall read went a little south by the end because it was just a bit too much to swallow. Further, the end was rather predictable and, consequently, something of a letdown on that score, as well.
I've read a lot of Ludlum books over the years and very much enjoyed most of them. I think he did his best work earlier in his writing career with books like THE RHINEMANN EXCHANGE, THE OSYERMAN WEEKEND, THE MATARESE CIRCLE and THE BOURNE IDENTITY. It has seemed to me that in his more recent books he has reached further for complex plots and lost some of the edge from the intense and compelling action and drama that were his greatest strengths. Don't get me wrong, though. THE SIGMA PROTOCOL is definitely a page-turner and fun to read. Four stars is still a pretty good rating. I just feel that it's a step beneath Ludlum's best.

This modern day novel about the son of a Holocaust survivor who gets entangled in an international conspiracy by industrialists and financiers to take advantage of wartime technology had me on the edge of my chair awaiting the next "surprise." I'll never use computer fingerprint scanning in place of a password to open my computer after reading this story. If you enjoy Robert Ludlum's other titles, you need to read this Ludlum's final suspenseful novel.

It has been many years since I’ve read a Ludlum book but this brought me right back. The pace of the book and twist and turns were classic Ludlum.

This is typical Ludlum and keeps you wanting to read one more chapter before you take a break. There are times that the details get overdone. It is hard to tell if it is done for clarity or he is just filling space. If it gets boring, these sections are easy to scan until he gets back to the main plot. This is a must read for any Ludlum fan.
