- Reviewed in the United States on April 20, 2023THE SOULMATE by Sally Hepworth is a twisted domestic psychological suspense/thriller that continually surprised me. I have been avoiding this genre because I felt they all read alike and began to bore me, but this story is anything but cookie cutter and boring. This is a standalone book that you will want to make time to read.
Gabe and Pippa and their two small daughters have moved to their dream cottage in a small coastal Australian town. The only problem is the cottage has a cliff behind their home called “The Drop” at the end of the street that people use to end their lives. Since their move, Gabe has been very successful at talking people away from the ledge, until Pippa watching through the kitchen window, sees a woman Gabe is talking to go over the cliff.
Did she jump or was she pushed?
When Pippa discovers the identity of the woman, questions and doubts begin to tear their seemingly perfect marriage apart.
While the protagonists of this story are Gabe and Pippa, another couple Max and Amanda play a pivotal role throughout this always surprising plot. The story itself is narrated by Pippa in the now and in the then, while intertwining with Amanda telling her narration in the before and the after. It may sound confusing, but it is surprisingly easy to follow as they tell the reader about their marriages. This story focuses on how each couple looked at their own marriage, fidelity and partnership with the suspense occurring whenever their lives intersected. There are many secrets that I cannot reveal, but I will say that every time I felt I knew where the plot was headed, I was wrong. The author did an excellent job of showing Gabe’s mental illness through his actions and the codependence Pippa displayed. This is an exciting read that showed me there are still some domestic suspense stories worth reading even though I am not sure I liked the climax.
I recommend this domestic psychological suspense/thriller.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 3, 2023"Funny how love can remain, despite everything."
I will say that this was one of those books that you were like oh yeah... I've totally figured it out... only to be proven completely wrong in like the very next chapter. I cannot tell you the number of times I was reading and then something would happen and I'd be shocked because I really didn't see it coming. The author does a really good job with the misdirection and intentional misleading... and it really does showcase the ways the characters have told themselves such convincing lies. I honestly spent most of the book questioning my assumptions about things. Eventually I just stopped and was even more shocked by the big reveals that the author dropped into the storyline. And it was like they were no big deal... which I think is also indicative of Pippa and Gabe's relationship. They hide from so much.
The book was a little slow for me at points and it didn't feel like much was happening. Which, in all fairness, when the main event happens in the first chapter it doesn't really leave much anticipation building. Everything else is just a look at what led up to that event and what happened after. It was interesting to get this view of Pippa and Gabe's "perfect" marriage and to realize just how imperfect it was. It was interesting to have Amanda's point of view in the story, because it was like the polar opposite of Pippa's. I have to admit that this was one of those books that I didn't see the end coming. I however don't think it felt too much like a thriller. It honestly felt like a just a story about two vastly different marriages. Overall, it was an interesting read with lots of twists and turns.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 26, 2024This standout domestic thriller story of two marriages, secrets, betrayal, and a side order of suicide does not disappoint. In typical Sally Hepworth style, yes there is a murder, but there are also strong elements of family behavior that is explored in a complex albeit fascinating way as the truth is revealed. A great read indeed. RECOMMENDED!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 5, 2024I ripped through the pages of The Soulmate by Sally Hepworth fast and furiously to find out what the final outcome of this book was and loved every plot twist!
Gabe and Pippa bought a cliffside home not knowing that the cliff in their backyard was a popular suicide spot. Gabe has successfully talked every potential jumper off the ledge until one woman ends up at the bottom and she changes everything.
This book is well written, it hooked me from the beginning and has characters that are interestingly flawed. My favorite character is Max, the husband of the jumper, Amanda, because even though he has a few morally gray areas, everything comes back to him trying to do what’s right.
I love that the book is narrated by Pippa, Gabe’s wife and Amanda, Max’s wife. We get to see the ins and outs of each marriage and the differences of each. The story is told starting in the “now” and alternates to the “then” throughout the book until it brings us to the stunning finale.
I can’t recommend this book enough for a fast paced domestic mystery/drama.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 31, 2024People use the cliff near their home to commit suicide. Gabe has successfully talked 7 people into not jumping. He lost his winning streak with Amanda. But it turns out Amanda was no stranger, and what Pippa saw out of the window doesn’t match what Gabe told the police.
Good story with a great twist!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 29, 2025A really good read with plenty of twists.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sally Hepworth is an amazing writer!
This was gripping right from the beginning. And I admit, I was expecting the ending to disappointment me, because I couldn't figure out how you'd wrap something like this up. But I was wrong and I did not see it coming. The twists are calculated and unpredictable. The ending had me gasping!
Hepworth delicately touches on dark and tragic circumstances throughout the book, as well as the impacts of mental illness on people, their lives and their relationships.
The ONLY negative thing I can say about this book is sometimes Amanda and Pippa's POV sounded very similar. So for me, their personalities, the way they thought and the way they told a story were indistinguishable. It's something I usually don't like because it confuses me, but luckily, in this book, their stories were different enough for it not to be distracting.
Otherwise, I loved this book. The setting is so vivid, I could picture myself standing on the edge. And the characters are brilliant.
